1 CANADIAN FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN: BRANTFORD FÉDÉRATION CANADIENNE DES FEMMES DIPLOMÉES DES UNIVERSITÉS Christmas is just over a week away! I'm one of those Canadians who loves snow and loves the winter. I was born in Northern Quebec, and one of my favourite Christmas memories is going into the "bush" each year with my Dad and my brother and sister, cung down our tree and bringing it home on the toboggan. When we eventually moved to Southern Ontario, it was a shock to realize that, here, one had to PAY for a tree! I hope this season also brings you fond memories of your past winters. This past Tuesday, CFUW Branord connued our tradion of a Holiday Potluck celebraon. It was held at the beauful home of Pa and about 30 members enjoyed the fesvies. Originally, we were expecng over 40 members, and Pa was concerned about the logiscs of hosng a sit- down meal for that many people. It was decided to change it to a "finger-food" potluck with appezers and sweets. Many members commented that they thought this was an excellent change and that we should consider keeping this format in the future. The food was excellent, the conversaon lively and the space beauful. Thank you Pa! We have two events fast approaching in the New Year. First is the book launch on Tuesday, January 16th. Look for further details in this newsleer. Second is the annual Trivia Contest, taking place on Wednesday, February 7 (note the change of date). Both of these events raise money for the CFUW Branord Scholarship Fund so please do your best to support them! In other business, the GWI fee increase is an ongoing concern, but rather than go into that now, I think I will leave that discussion for aſter the holidays. Wishing you and your families all the best of the holiday season! CANADIAN FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN:

BRANTFORD FÉDÉRATION CANADIENNE DES FEMMES DIPLOMÉES DES UNIVERSITÉS

Christmas is just over a week away! I'm one of those Canadians who loves snow and loves the winter. I was born in Northern Quebec, and one of my favourite Christmas memories is going into the "bush" each year with my Dad and my brother and sister, cutting down our tree and bringing it home on the toboggan. When we eventually moved to Southern Ontario, it was a shock to realize that, here, one had to PAY for a tree! I hope this season also brings you fond memories of your past winters. This past Tuesday, CFUW Brantford continued our tradition of a Holiday Potluck celebration. It was held at the beautiful home of Patti and about 30 members enjoyed the festivities. Originally, we were expecting over 40 members, and Patti was concerned about the logistics of hosting a sit-down meal for that many people. It was decided to change it to a "finger-food" potluck with appetizers and sweets. Many members commented that they

thought this was an excellent change and that we should consider keeping this format in the future. The food was excellent, the conversation lively and the space beautiful. Thank you Patti!

We have two events fast approaching in the New Year. First is the book launch on Tuesday, January 16th. Look for further details in this newsletter. Second is the annual Trivia Contest, taking place on Wednesday, February 7 (note the change of date). Both of these events raise money for the CFUW

Brantford Scholarship Fund so please do your best to support them! In other business, the GWI fee increase is an ongoing concern, but rather than go into that now, I think I will leave that discussion for after the holidays. Wishing you and your families all the best of the holiday season! Respectfully submitted by Penelope Jeffery on behalf of the leadership team: Trish James and Patti Kunashko

Congratulations to Jacklyn Appleby, winner of the CFUW Brantford Mature Student Trust Award B for 2017! Jacklyn is attending Laurier/Conestoga College in Brantford; her program is Community and Social Service Management. She also works in a long-term care home in Hamilton where she has risen to the position of Customer Care Services Associate. Her high school years had not been successful and she chose to go out to work after high school, but eventually found her niche in long-term care work. It was encouragement from her colleagues there which gave her the confidence to continue her education and apply to Laurier/Conestoga. She is hard-working and ambitious and will have a very successful career. In her letter of thanks, Jacklyn states “Education opens the door for the future and it is amazing for such a wonderful organization to recognize that. I want to personally thank you for your investment in women, and the futures of students like me”.

CFUW Brantford (Like Us!) 2 @CFUWBrantford

Many thanks of appreciation to the membership of CFUW for contributing to this year's Basketeer Programme. We collected a grand total of $595.00, and were able to purchase kitchen items for each of two baskets. Home Hardware was again generous with a charitable discount towards our purchases. We tried to concentrate our choice of items based on the basic necessities required to set up a kitchen Some of the most important articles in each basket (laundry basket) were a set of Corelle dishes, a set of flatware, an electric kettle, a fry pan, a toaster, a set of pots, towels, oven mitts,

and a set of glasses. Various small items such as measuring spoons, measuring cup, can opener, spatula, peeler, storage containers, kitchen scissors, slotted spoon, flipper, cake and loaf pan were also included in each of our kitchen baskets.

Thanks again to Murray McEwen who delivered the baskets to Nova Vita on the morning of Saturday, December 2nd for us, as they were very heavy. We also appreciated the special CFUW Brantford cards created by Janet R. and attached to each basket. (Lynne M. and Barb P.)
