THE ALUMNI AND PARENT NEWSLETTER OF THE IOTA CHAPTER OF ZETA BETA TAU OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DENVER

Letter from the PresidentFall quarter was a very important quarter for this, the Iota, chapter. Our recruitment team, lead byJohn Kopec, recruited and initiated 34 members. This recruitment class increased the chapter sizeto a campus high of 113 brothers. After recruit-ment, we continued our great quarter with raisingalmost $10,000 for Children’s Miracle Network.Austin Oberfeld and his committee worked hardall summer to make sure this Get on the Ball wassuccessful. Thanks to all alumni and parents thathelped us raise the money for the kids! My VicePresidents, Stephen Stanis and Scott Grahamhave been working hard all quarter to keep ourbrothers busy with events including exchanges, socials, mini golf, go karts, movies, trips to thedeli, and many more things. They are currentlybusy planning ZBTahiti and Formal, which willboth occur in spring quarter. During all of thesethings, Iota has been winning lots of IntramuralSports including bringing home the champi-onship in soccer. Our GPA was once again abovethe all men’s average at the university andDominic Italia has been doing a great job keepingthis chapter focused on academics. Last but notleast, I would like to give a thank you to ChristianThorndal Nielsen and Peter Throckmorton for theeffort at their jobs that can sometimes be thank-less. As we look ahead to elections this quarter, Ican confidently say we have many brothers look-ing to run that will do great things for this chap-ter. Things have been going very well lately at theIota chapter and that is due to all of the hardwork of all the brothers here.

Go Blackhawks,

C, F & S,Nick YoungPresident of Zeta Beta Tau’s Iota Chapter

Vice-Presidents Wow, fall quarter went by fast! Throughout thewhirlwind, we were proud of the events that tookplace this past quarter. The recruitment chair, JohnKopec, and his committee laid the groundwork forour outstanding fall rush throughout the summer, and their hard work certainly paid off with 34 newbrothers, pushing Iota well over the century mark.Community Service also hit a new high, with thechapter completing over 1,000 combined hoursthis quarter. Alumni football was a great success, although unfortunately the alumni did pull off awin with a strong showing from the recent gradu-ates, and a surprise-rushing touchdown fromSteve. There has been a lot for Iota to be excitedabout in the past half year, and we are confidentwe are set up to reach many new highs in the nearfuture.

C, F & S,Scott Graham External Vice President

This quarter has had its share of benchmarks forthe Iota chapter of Zeta Beta Tau – we’ve hit newhighs in what seems to be every committee in thefraternity. With the initiation of 34 new brothers, our Traditions and Rituals committees had theirhands full, but performed well above expecta-tions. Our Rituals committee, led by Josh Lansky, did a tremendous job of hosting our initiation inthe university's Gottesfeld Room, bringing thenew brothers into the fraternity with class. OurTraditions committee, tasked with organizing ourretreats, helped to bond this class to the rest ofthe fraternity, aided greatly by our BDD eventsand the bi-weekly fraternity lessons held by ourProvost, Layne Hopkins. Perhaps our mostimpressive committee this fall, however, wasPhilanthropy. Austin Oberfeld and his committeetook it upon themselves to raise the bar of thisfraternity’s philanthropic efforts, and to use thechapter’s now over 100 manpower to achievetheir high goals. With Austin and his committee,as well the entire fraternity, supporting this effort,we were able to raise over $10,000! It was anamazing thing to see as a senior how far the fra-ternity has come in all aspects of fraternity life, and I look forward to more progress the rest ofthis year and beyond.

It’s great to be a Zebe!

Brotherhood EducationHello, my name is Layne and I currently hold theposition of Provost within the fraternity. As theProvost I am responsible for the education of thechapter as a whole. This includes inviting speak-ers to chapter, having leadership workshops, andrunning new brother education for freshman dur-ing their first quarter in the chapter. Over the lastyear we have had speakers that include theChancellor, DU Career Services, a MS society rep-resentative and Campus Safety. I personallybelieve that these speakers provide a uniquelearning opportunity for the chapter because theyteach us about leadership, heritage, and show uswhat our philanthropy goes to. I also believe thatit is important to help the junior and senior class-es find potential jobs while also helping the fresh-man and sophomore classes prepare for thefuture. This is why I try to have a workshop orspeaker that is focused on the future each quar-ter. This quarter DU career services will be com-ing to the chapter and informing brothers abouttheir program. The DU career services is an excel-lent program that can provide job opportunitieswith Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, ArrowElectronics, and many other organizations.

Speakers are a critical part of the development ofour chapter, but it is brotherhood that trulymakes up the roots of our fraternity. ZBT hasbeen a very progressive chapter throughout itshistory. In 1954 ZBT opened its doors to men ofall creeds, religions, and race and in 1989 ZBTtossed aside its pledge process and eliminatedhazing. This has led to a truly unique educationexperience that creates brotherhood through truebonding instead of a two tier system. I have spentthe last year revamping the education program tofocus on supporting freshman as they transitionthrough one of the largest transitions in their life.New brother education now focuses on informingthem about the history of the chapter and thegeneral information they need to know aboutGreek Life while also supporting them throughtheir first year of school. The education experi-ence begins with new brother education wherefreshman are reminded that school comes beforeeverything. In the end we are here to gain aninvaluable education. It also focuses on beingsocially aware, having integrity, and creating astrong brotherly bond. While new brother educa-tion is the core program of our education it neverends there. I have had the honor of watchingeveryone from the freshman to the seniors growthroughout my three years in this chapter and Itruly believe that the Iota chapter has positively

8

influenced every individual in the chapter.

C, F & S,Layne Hopkins Provost

BrotherhoodMy name is Nathan Bracy and I am the BrotherhoodDevelopment chair for Zeta Beta Tau’s Iota chapter.I’m a senior and joined ZBT in the winter of 2012.As Brotherhood Development (or BDD) chair, myduties are to keep my brothers interested andengaged in ZBT. Ultimately, if a brother is thinkingabout dropping the fraternity it is my job to gaugewhat went wrong. On a daily basis, I look for funand interesting activities for the fraternity to dotogether. For example, we have gone to play mini-golf, paintballing, played laser tag, bowling, andother events.

In addition to this, the BDD chair works with theProvost, or the new brother educator, to create les-son plans and teach the new brothers about theirfraternity. Lastly, I try to make myself available toall brothers in case they need advice or anythingalong those lines.

C, F & S,Nathan BracyBrotherhood Development Chairman

Parent/Alumni Relations This past fall quarter was yet another fun quarterhere with the Iota chapter. As the chairmen ofparent and alumni relations I had the pleasure ofhelping organize several events throughout thequarter. We had our annual fall alumni footballgame and am sad but not surprised to say thatthe alumni took home yet again another win asthey have had great success in years past againstthe undergraduate team. We had a great turnoutfor our alumni poker event as well at our house.Parents weekend was great to see so many par-ents come out and see the house and meet manyof our brothers, following our hockey team’s winagainst Boston College that night! Overall it was agreat fall quarter and I am looking forward to thiscoming winter. My job as chairmen is to helpkeep parents and alumni connected with what isgoing on with the Iota. As always if you ever haveany questions or possible suggestions for parentand alumni events please reach out to me [email protected].

AthleticsSports! We had yet another successful quarter ofathletics competing in five sports. We had sixteams playing in intramural soccer, flag football, volleyball, basketball, and broomball and co-recbroomball. The soccer team took there season allof the way to win the championship. Our footballteam also made it to the end of the season how-ever lost in championship by a tragic one point.Overall it was a great season and we are on ourway to yet another overall Greek athletic champi-on title.

In addition to intramural sports we also had inhouse games with our new athletic equipment. On any given day you can find a few brothersplaying basketball on the court behind the house, but we also organized a brotherhood event, which brought out our new freshmen to partici-pate in a tournament.

With winter quarter coming we will be participat-ing in another season of intramural sports andheading to the mountains for some skiing andsnowboarding. Hopefully without injuries on thefields or the slopes we will continue our pursuitof the overall Greek athletic championship!.

Risk Management Risk Management took another huge leap forwardfor the Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity Iota Chapter. Westrived to set the right tone moving forward in thequarter by introducing to the new initiates what itmeans to be ‘your brother’s keeper’, because allthings aside, upon being initiated into this power-house of excellence, we become family. And fami-ly comes first. With this mindset, we implementedrules to manage our fraternity’s social events in themost effective and efficient fashion. The risk man-agement schedule was designed to ensure furtherbonding between brothers as a member from eachclass was always on staff, accentuating the need forbrotherhood among all and the imperativeness forcooperation in order for success. In light of theseadjustments, the brothers were very willing to raisetheir hand to help the risk management effortswithout being asked, showing how far we’ve comein valuing safety and protecting our family!

C, F & S,Alexander Hill Risk Management Chairman

Academics ZBT Iota once again showed its commitment to aca-demic excellence this past quarter. Iota maintainedone of the foremost overall GPA averages amongfraternities at the University of Denver, and had agreater overall GPA than that of the DU all men’saverage. In the spring quarter of 2014, Iota wasproud to name 13 brothers to the Dean’s list. Thesebrothers each had a GPA equal to or greater than3.75 for the quarter. A major goal for this fall is tobeat this already impressive number of brothers onDean’s list.

This quarter had a number of new brothersobtained from fall rush, each of which wentthrough the new brother tradition of attendingweekly study tables, as well as meeting with ourfaculty academic advisor, Greg Grauberger. Newbrothers were counseled on useful study habitsand on ways of being proactive in their classes andin relationships with teachers. Brothers who werehaving difficulties meeting the ZBT Iota GPA require-ment went through much the same process. Theyattended study tables and met with Mr. Grauberger.Helping these struggling brothers is one of the mostimportant aspects of the Academics Chair position.

ZBT Iota is proud of its academic accomplish-ments, and aims to forever increase its academicquality. Iota will never relent in its efforts of sustain-ing a prestigious academic record.

RecruitmentAs the fall quarter came to an end there were manygreat things to reflect on over fall quarter and lookforward to for the rest of the year. With a total of40 bids handed out, we not only had the bestretention rate the University of Denver Iota chapterhas ever had, but also the largest fall recruitmentclass in our history. We initiated exactly 34 newbrothers this fall! Our chapter has continued togrow from last year and is still the largest fraterni-ty on campus while still maintaining our standardsas the number one fraternity at the DU.

This rush experience was a little bit different thanthe rush processes in the past due to somechanges with IFC. This year we were allowed twoon campus events and one off campus, which isone less on campus event from last year. Our oncampus events included a BBQ on Friday andcigars and sandwiches or ‘Stogies and Hoagies’ onSunday. In the past, indoor skydiving has been anextremely popular off campus event but we decid-ed to change things up this fall by switching toPaintball. Paintballing could not have gone any bet-ter. It allowed for endless conversation withprospects and encouraged teamwork in the 10 vs.10 games. With this outstanding bonding eventand an overall great showing of both brothers andprospects, we will continue to do paintballing nextyear as our off campus event.

With fall recruitment passed, we have alreadybegun planning for the winter. With the help of theE-Board and a brotherhood of well over one hun-dred brothers, we will continue to initiate qualitymen into our “Powerhouse of Excellence”. I amextremely proud of this chapter and my committeewith the results from this fall. With that being said,we are always accepting recruitment recommenda-tions. If you know anyone interested or simplywants to see what Greek life has to offer, pass alongtheir contact information via [email protected] by cell phone (319) 899-2824.

DO CHARITY. Always! This quarter was a huge success with our Get OnThe Ball fundraiser. This fundraiser goes to theChildren’s Miracle Network to help support youngchildren who cannot afford certain medical treat-ments. We were able to raise over $10,000! Wecould not have done it without the help and sup-port of all the parents, alumni, and brothers ofthis chapter. I was thrilled with the success wehad this past quarter am excited to start workingon Red Nose Days our winter philanthropic eventwhich supports the Children’s Miracle Network.

Our HouseA typical day as the housing director at Zeta BetaTau fraternity is a thrilling ride through three floorsthat create our home. I wake up earlier that mostbrothers in the house, I walk around to see what Ican find to put into that day’s work orders. Whilemy main job is to maintain the cleanliness, safetyand efficiency of the house and I am there for thebrothers. Being a young alumnus I find I can be amentor to our younger brothers. Furthermore, I amthe liaison between the housing corporation, clean-ing crew, catering service and the University. I aman employee of DU. My job is straightforward; makesure the house is in a livable and safe condition forcurrent and future brothers to enjoy a special placebrothers before us have worked hard to maintain.

Our RitualsThis fall we were happy to initiate 34 new membersto our brotherhood. For initiation ritual our advisorswere able to attend. During retreat, new brotherswere able to connect through old brothers storiesand experiences. The rituals of ZBT Iota are contin-uing to bring out brotherhood closer together. As isa ZBT tradition we start each meeting with a read-ing from our Ritual. In planning our programmingwe are mindful that it should bring our ritual to life.

Interfraternity CouncilThis past quarter I continued to hold my position aspresident of the Interfraternity Council (IFC). Alongwith this position there was no Vice President ofRecruitment, or Vice President of Risk Managementslated, because of this I took on those two posi-tions as well. This has been challenging but it hasalso encouraged excellence in myself, and in theZBT Iota Chapter. While I am in this position I workto hold my chapter and my brothers to a higherstandard in order to use ZBT as a role model, andstandard setter for the rest of the GreekCommunity. In this position I have been luckyenough to realize all that our chapter is doing right, but also how we can improve. I have been able towork alongside our chapter president and chairs toget a better idea of what chapters want to see hereon campus, and how I can help influence thesechanges. I hope to continue challenging ZBT, and tobe challenge by my brothers as I move forward inthis position.
