Transcript of An Introduction to iBeacons for Retailers
What are Beacons?
What is an iBeacon?
A beacon is a physical device that uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to broadcast its identity to nearby devices. An app identifying the beacon, can deliver content or perform actions based on the users location.
iBeacon is Apple’s implementation of Bluetooth-low-energy (BLE) wireless
technology to create a different way of providing location-based information and
services to iPhones and other iOS devices.
What isBluetooth Low Energy Communication?
Beacons broadcast identifying information that can be received by any Bluetooth LE enabled smartphone or tablet.
A customer opts in by having a brand or store’s beacon integrated mobile app installed and by having Bluetooth enabled on their smartphone.
Think of it like a lighthouse:It sits in one location and broadcasts out to anyone (any app, really) that is listening.
Types of HardwareComputers, tablets, smartphones, USB dongles, stickers and specific coin battery powered hardware
Radio-frequency IdentificationRFID can scan for tags and tracking visitor flow data, but is not well suited for customer interaction.
Global Positioning SystemGPS is able to determine location and
a higher level but does not allow for the precise pinpointing of specific
locations.
Near Field CommunicationReserved for very close interactions. Customers must physically tap their
device to a terminal for a transaction to take place.
Bluetooth Low EnergyCustomers are greeted when they enter the store, can be notified of
promotions, productinformation and additional offers.
Wi-FiWireless local area networks that can be used to connect Wi-Fi enabled devices within range, including consumer devices, and grant them access to the Internet.
Most location technology is capable of a wider range of use, we indicate the primary use case for each.
