Dobson resident wins trip to ItalyOn a cold winter day, Ruth Dufresne likes to spend time reminiscing about an eight-day
trip that she won to Italy. The Dobson resident participated in a drawing conducted by UNC-TV, Raleigh, during a Lawrence Welk Show, and was later notified that she was the winner of a drwing that included a journey to three major cities, Rome, Florence and Ven-ice. The announcement came from Carolyn Francis of UNC-TV stating that the tour was planned by Globus Travel and that she could take a partner with her. Dufresne invited her daughter, Debra Carr of Pacific Palasides, Calif., to accompany her on the journey .
Their trip carried them to all the major sites in Rome, including the Vatican, Florence and Venice with several days spent in each city. Dufresne said it was an experience of a lifetime. “We saw many historical sights, met many interesting people from different cultures and backgrounds and made memories that we’ll treasure forever,” she added.
A faithful supporter of UNC-TV for many years, Dufresne enourages others to render their support as well. She expressed appreciation to UNC-TV for having given them this experience of a lifetime.

Mr. E.J. Loftis Jr. or (June) celebrated his 95th birthday with a dinner at Mt. Airy Country Club on Friday, February 3rd. The actual birthday was on February 1st. June’s older sister Mrs. Lettie Patterson who is 97 celebrated along with her ‘little brother’ and some other in town relatives and friends. It’s great that June can still be active and involved with church and community activities and to appreciate the interest and sup-port of family and neighbors. June still works in his flower bed outside, sings in the choir, teaches a Sunday School class of other seniors, walks for exercise and enjoys reading and some TV. Staying active is to June a real key for some extended years and good health.

Dayspring Baptist Chapel on White Dirt Road near Dobson, recently celebrated a note burning service in the church sanc-tuary. Special guests included Brother Wayne Runyon, evangelist from West Vir-ginia, who delivered the morning message, and Brother
Bill Anderson of Mount Airy. The church began on December 12,1993, when a small group of believers, eleven in number, met at the Dobson radio station with Roger Pickett for the ten o’clock broadcast of the Dayspring Ministries Sunday service. A week later there were thirty-six in atten-dance which included Bill Anderson. He was so touched by the presence of the Holy Spirit at the gathering that he vowed to build a church for the brothers and sisters he had just met, and he did. The church was built on land that was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hardy, and Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Hardy of Hardy Brothers Trucking company of Siloam and J & S Trucking of Lexington. Grading and clearing the land was donated by Bobby Watson of Watson Trucking Company in Mount Airy.
On February 6, 1994, the church was of-ficially chartered; Roger Picket was called to pastor the church. Elders of the chapel were Bill Hodges, Ricky Burcham, John Wright, Roger Pickett, Leonard Hodges, Johnny Hawks and Bill Anderson.
Ground breaking took place on Febru-ary 20, 1994 and Dayspring Baptist Cha-pel held it’s first service on August 28th of the same year. Bother Roger Pickett continues to pastor the church. Ricky Bur-cham is Assistant Pastor. Present deacons include, Bill Hodges, David Busick, Buddy Creed, and Richard Crouse. In addition, the Church will honor the Founders with a Founder’s Day Service on February 19, 2012. Bill Anderson will speak at the 11:00 AM worship service.. Submitted by Nancy Cavanaugh Photo Courtesy Glenda Casste-vens
