Cruise Coron

An audiencewith a kingA regal welcoming party awaits cruisepassengers on the tiny island ofCoron, writes Roderick Eime

‘‘YES, YourMajesty, everythingis arranged. No, thank you, YourMajesty, we have everythingwe need.’’

And with that, expeditionleader Justin Friend flipped hisphone shut and breathed a sigh ofrelief. We are about to meet HisRoyal Highness Tribal ChieftainRodolfo Aguilar I in his ancestralkingdom, the island of Coron.

Expedition shipOrion II hasjust dropped anchor in the narrowstrait between Busuanga Islandand its lesser satellite, Coron, inthe Sulu Sea, about 300km south-southwest of Manila.

It is a wild part of the Philippinesinhabited by the northern (orCalawian) Tagbanua people, whoare quite possibly the oldest ethnicgroup in the Philippines.

Despite his minuscule dominionof about 22,000ha of land and sea,HRH Rodolfo is not a monarch tobe trifled with. Together with hisCouncil of Elders, he obtained aCertificate of Ancestral DomainTitle for his people in 1998, ineffect a native land title allowinglocal management of resources.

In the hotbed of Filipino politics, that is no mean feat and it meanshe has all but absolute rule overthis little region, which includesrugged volcanic islands and themuch-prized fishing grounds.Perched on the bouncy bits of

our Zodiac tenders, the floppy-hatted delegationmotors towardsa secluded beach on Coron Island, just out of sight of the maintownship across the strait on

Busuanga. Our landing site is asheltered cove overseen bytowering basalt cliffs splatteredwith gnarly outcrops of awkward-looking shrubs clinging to thesheer walls.

DuringWorldWar II, thesecraggy alcoves hid warships andtransports of the Japanese navy asthey made the treacherousvoyage between Japan and thebattlefronts of Borneo and PapuaNewGuinea.

With the Allies on the front footin the closing months of 1944, 12ships laden with urgent supplies

for the embattled Japanese forceswere located by Allied aircraft andsunk at anchor. This ghost fleet ofCoron is now one of the world’sbest locations for wreck divers, and dive shops dot the main streetin town, catering to the constanttrickle of underwater explorersarriving from all over the world.Mostly stripped of their

valuable contents by postwarsalvagers, the bare hulks are easilyexplored by divers of reasonableability in depths of 25m to 30m.Colourful marine organisms haveattached themselves to the

rusting relics, while batfish, stonefish, barracuda, lion fish andmorepatrol the decks and open holds.

As our tiny flotilla approachesthe little beach, we can see all is inreadiness for the royal occasion.

Makeshift picnic shelters andbenches festooned with local floraawait, while villagers bustle aboutwith last-minute preparations.Unloaded and ashore, we gatherin anticipation. Meanwhile,Justin, who spent weeks in theregion organising this regaloccasion, addresses the gathering.

‘‘This is really quite a special

occasion,’’ he says. ‘‘We are the firstcruise ship to visit the kingdom of Coronand it is with the blessing of His RoyalHighness that we are here enjoying thismagnificent location.’’

Justin makes a theatrical sweep of hisarm, symbolically embracing the gorgeousbay, the aggressive basaltic grandeur of itscliffs and all who camp within. And with this none-too-subtle cue, an

unassuming gentleman breaks from theranks of the locals and steps forward toaddress us. Nomink or ermine or pearledcrown, King Rodolfo’s regalia extends toa clean, collared polo shirt adorned with adelicate yellow scarf and crisp denimshorts. A pair of well-worn blue Crocscompletes the ensemble.

Through an interpreter, HisMajestygreets us and we join him in a short prayer. The Tagbanua people are nominallyChristian, although adherence totraditional rituals and beliefs is strong. They have their own language and aunique script, but those with the knowledgeof the ancient tongue are dying out.

With the solemn ceremony over, thegathering is treated to a display oftraditional Tagbanua dance. It is raw andrudimentary without lavish props or

production, but the significance is not lost. The courting dance, or segutset, inparticular, is unmistakable and Justin lookslike he may be spirited away into the jungleat any moment by a particularlyenthusiastic female member of the tribe.

While his subjects quickly dispensewith formality and embrace us in thefestivities, King Rodolfo maintains analoof air as he taps rhythmically on a skindrum. He is king, after all.

The imposing basalt cliffs protecting usfrom the blazing sun also provide avaluable resource for the Tagbanua: swiftnests. These tiny birds nest high in thecliffs in little nooks and on ledges 100mandmore above us.

One athletic youngman climbs the cliffas we look on, holding our breath.Barefoot and clad only in a flimsy pair ofshorts, he clambers to an overhang, fromwhere he throws us a cheery wave.

Swift nests have been used in Chinesecuisine for hundreds of years and a kilo ofsaliva that forms the little birds’ nests canbe worth up to $10,000. The king, therefore, is mindful of potentialdisturbance to his fragile resource andtourism like ours is cautiously welcomed,as long as it doesn’t affect his hard-woncultural and economic independence.

After a day of lazing in the opal-huedwaters around Coron and a visit toKayangan Lake just next door, reputedlythe cleanest inland body of water in thePhilippines, the party moves back on toOrion II, our 88m luxury ship taking up to100 guests on expeditions in all-suite comfort.

Our Coron cultural liaison and localeco-hero, young Al Linsangan, mustershis minstrels on the rear deck andenthrals guests with a bouncy but soulfulrepertoire of local rhythms set to modernelectronic instruments.

As the well-relaxed diners tap their feetto Al and his troupe’s cheery ballads, Ican’t help feeling he is singing a song ofoptimism and hope. Will the tiny Tagbanuacommunity thrive or shrivel in the gaze ofglobal tourism? I put that thought aside fora moment and sing along.
