PREFACE

Alhamdulillahi Robbil a’alamin. First of all, I thank Allah SWT who has

given us mercy and blessing second to second until the writer could finish my

thesis entitled “An Analysis of Spy and Punishment Method to Encourage

Students to Speak English (as Used in Darussalam Islamic Boarding school,

Gontor)” as partial requirements in completing bachelor’s degree of English

Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Muhammadiyah University

of Purwokerto.

Dealing with the process of finishing this thesis, there are a lot of people

with big role in helping the writer whom the writer would like to thank to namely:

1. Dr. H. Syamsuhadi Irsyad, S.H, M.H, as the Rector of Muhammadiyah

University of Purwokerto.

2. Drs. Pudiyono, M. Hum, as the Dean of Teacher Training Education

Abstract: Islamic boarding school, Gontor Putri 3 with 2548 students is one of

boarding schools which emphasize English as a language to communicate in the

daily activity. It is not an easy task to make the thousand students to speak

English, so the teachers, and students who are gathered in the BLI (Branch

Language Improvement), CLI (Central Language Improvement), and LAC

(Language Advisory Council) designed a method which is called spy and

punishment method in order to monitor the students’ use of English. To know the

use of English of the students, and the implementation of the spy and punishment

method, the researcher did an observation, interview, and collected some

documents. The result was descriptively arranged and it consists of two category.

Namely, the use of students’ English speaking, and the implementation of spy and

punishment method.
