Greetings to one and al l f rom Rhodesi a the name that everyone knows thesedays bu t probably no one completely understands. From what w as once an almostidy ll ic land peaceful and prosperous has come a notion synonomous with conflictfear and quit e a lot of v io lence . The world we live in is at t imes incomprehensible. We u su ally s ee what we want to see and a re completely blind to othe r situations. The world seems determined to wreck this country both in its spiri t and in its e conomy. And they will never res t until some form of government is establ i shed whi ch f avou rs the communist bloc thereby putting the r iches of this land under the influence of those eastern powers. Not that everything in this land has been perfectfor the past decades. Certainly not There has been much injustice and deservedcri t icism. But changes are coming and where is the reason in the actions andpre-ferences of the West? We o ver he re are quite often confused by what we see andh e a r .

Last week I t raveled to a dis tant par t of Rhodesia Melse t t e r to attend and provide music for a funeral service . It was a very sad affair. A few months ago Imentioned that a Christ ian couple had been ambushed and killed by te r ror is ts . A 21-year old son was left to care for the coffee plantation. He was marr ied and just afte r Chr i s tmas a new baby was born named Kenneth after the deceased f athe r.While traveling in a convoy with their 14-d ay o ld son the ca r went out of controland the young mother was killed in a terrible accident. The baby has j us t beentak -en off the cr i t i ca l l is t in the hospita l . The husband was in front of the convoy andknew nothing about the accident until some t ime l a te r . John Viljoen is a par t of avery close loving and Chris t ian family and they all showered him w ith this concern and are helping h im th ro ug h th is v ery dark hour .

It was quite an experience to t ravel from Umtali down to Melset ter and back byconvoy. There was a t ruck of soldiers heavi ly a rmed in front and also one in back.Instruct ions were given to each driver before leaving Umtali. Fvery car had atl e a s t orgun and usua l ly mor e . Windows were ro lle d down and guns were held re ady . What a terrible way to have to travel We went through such beaut ifu l country . Rich farm land very valuable t imber a reas . This is one of the most beautifula reas o f Rhodes ia . A convoy had been f ired on jus t two d ay s b efo re we went th ro

ugh there. All day you could hear people reminiscing about the good old days (notmore than a year before), when they could t ravel freely, stop fo r p ic nic s andwa lk sand not have to m ove with tension and fear. These fa rme rs a re to be greatly admired. They have stayed put, produc ing much which has been greatly needed by thecountry. But the te ns ion take s its toll. Liv ing beh ind h igh fences, with bright spotlights,- and fierce dogs, also sleepless nights, begins to show in the eyes and faces.

While we enjoy balmy days, h er e, s ca tte re d sunshine, and occasional showers,we are reading about the heavy snows and blizzard conditions across much of thes tates . We can hardly picture o r imagine the co ld a nd misery in many parts . TheRhodesian people ju st c an t f athom what it is all about. I m sure that som Rhodes-ian friends, who have recently gone over to study in Americ a, must be receivingthe shock of their l ives. We pray that you are all well and keeping warm in yourc om f o r t a b l e h om e s .

A few days ago we received word that the youngest child of Mr. B. Nyekete, oneof our ministers here in town, had passed away. Mr. Nekete is minis ter of the Gle n Nora h church, and so many of you have helped with that project. The child wasnearly a year old, bu t was born with a double cleft palate and hair lip. It had nevergained sufficiently (it weighed less than pounds) to undergo surgery for the defects . This was quite a concern to the parents , and also a financial worry. Mostfeel that it is a rea l b le ss ing for the little one, and for the family. Special offerings were received yesterday to help the family.

School has s tar ted again, and this mean s re sum in g our Scripture classes . Raphae l Nyamuto ra and I attended a meeting on Saturday (they are held once a term)and cu rr en t ma t te r s were d iscussed . T here a re so many more a rea s where wecould make an impact if we had the t ime and petrol to get there. It may mean thatwe will try to engage another worker to help in the schoo l work .

Karolyn and I are also now work ing with Tod s age youth group on Friday nights. It is quite an enthusiast ic group, and not too la rge yet. Therefore we can use theKombi and t ransport them here and there for special ac tiv ities . F rid ay evening weall enjoyed a progressive supper, provided by different mothers . By the t ime wecame to the l as t house fo r des se r t we were a ll so full we could ha rd ly concen tr at eon the ev en ing devotions. This n ex t week we will be showing a film at the college.

I am so happy to te l l you that you that the over-draf t at the bank for the GlenNorah church building has been l iquidated . We borrowed 1,000 Rhodesian and a repaying this back dur ing the year , but the monthly receipts through the miss ion should be anaple to take care of this . We are so thankful for the many gifts we rece ived to help in this way. A special 500 check was received from the church in Se-bastopol, California, the home church of Miss Kathy McCarty . Kathy has beenheietw ice to help in Rhode sia , an d now, af ter finishing he r nursing degree, she plans tore turn in Augus t i f conditions permi t ) .

I am so r ry that this newsle t ter will be a bit late in reaching you. It slipped mymind complet ely. Besi de s th at, mai l is t ak ing much longer these days to get backand forth from Amer ica . Next t ime I will try to get the mater ia l off to Carthage,Mis sou r i a b i t e a r l i e r .

Thank you all again for your special concern . So many have writ ten, expressing your concern and te llin g o f y ou r prayers . We certainly do appreciate this. We

ced to stop holding services, though in other places the same can t be said. Up tothis time, the Salisbury churches have, if anything, become stronger. We see theeffects of the bush troubles, because people are drifting into town in search of safety. The Glen Norah work, especially, is developing in numbers and maturity. I amso thankful for their dil igence and faithful support of the preaching of the Word.It will be such a joy to meet you all again and share in many ways. Thanksagain for your in te res t and lo ve .

    D e a r Chr i s t i an fr iends

Hello to one and a l l f rom the A m m e r m a n s no t f rom Afr ica but f rom co ld America t seems so st range to be writing to you from this side of the world. Internat ional travel is so convenien t and quick these days. We are thankful for thatbless ing . And yet , the pioneer miss ionar ies who took, severa l weeks to reachtheir field of service , or to return to the States, had an advantage. T hat 'cu shio ning t ime' was just that. They had t ime to gradually pull away from one home, ontheir way to another. Those weeks gave th em t ime to reflect and to prepare theirminds and hearts for the next land. This present-day t ravel is almost too quick.n a few hours you can be in a new land, hearing a d if fe rent l anguage, and diggingin you r pocke t for som e new money.

think that it is largely the reason why at the presen t moment feel kindof l ikea fish out of water . The transition from one life to the other is too quick. amhome with family and friends and yet don't know if really belong here. My heartkeeps going back to Rhodesia and to the terrible struggle which is going on there.t is so good to be re-united with people here, and yet it is sad to feel so far awayfrom the peop le and work which is so very precious to us. As Bro. David Barger, minis te r a t L amar Mis so uri, s aid las t night, as we vis i ted before the serv ice began, Time is not only a healer, bu t also a revealer. Obviously that is t rue , and will keep repeating it to myself over the coming weeks and months .

Arriving in Indianapol is on Monday evening, the 20th of November, was metby Karolyn, Tod and my folks. Every flight on my jou rney was comfor tabl e andmore-or-less on t ime. was certainly thankful fo r s af ety on my tr ip. can't saythat am really happy to be in America, but the nicest part of coming was beingable to be with my family again. Karolyn, Amy and Tod left Africa on the 7th ofSeptember. Those two months and more were terribly long and lonely. lonly feltlike half a person. n order to make the time p as s more quickly, dug into worklike hadn't done for a long time. Those months were really a time of great accomplishment. worked late every night, and also woke early most mornings. Tokeep fresh and alert , went jogging and did some swimming. had to be involvedwith people, so shared mysel f with lots of friends. It was a rich t ime, with a lotof hard work and variety. The local people, both white and b lack , were very kindand generous to me. was inv it ed fo r lo ts of meals , and also tak en in af ter moved out of our house. am extremely thankful to all in Rhodesia who made my lastdays so memorable .

Already many people have asked us where we plan to sett le, wha t k ind of workwc will be doing, how long we will be travelling, etc. These are questions whichwe cannot answer r ight now. It looks doubtful that we wil l be able to return to Rhodesia. Our family is at a stage now where i t would be difficult for us to launch into something new. With Amy living and going to school in Missouri, and Tod doingthe same in Indiana, K aro lyn and are feeling the loss of a family. We are wanting to m ake a quick decis ion concerning a home and work, so we can all be sett leddown together again. But it may not be wise to be in too much of a hurry.

We are going back to Indiana to spend Chris tmas with my family, a nd also visitsome of the churches in that area. After that we will be contacting groups whichhave supported us through the years. Our main purpose in coming to the churchesis to share with them concerning our work during the past three and a half yearsand particularly to thank everyone for their faithfulness and generosity. We owesuch a debt to so many people . t has been so touching to leam of people 's interest

and of their willingness to s acri fice in case o f emergency in Rhodesia. That landis greatly troubled. Though we hear so little first-hand news now we know thateach day is marked by further violence and confusion Please continue to pray forthe count ry , and esp)ecially for the Christian people.

We want to take this opportunity t o extend special Christmas greetin} S to youall. What a wonderftil t ime of the year to share with family and friends. How wonderful to reflect upon God's love in sending His special Son to the earth, that we al lmight find the path to Heaven.

If you would like for us to visit your church or class, please contact us in careof W S Goodman, Box 459, Joplin, Missouri 64801. We will be happy to try toarrange a time when we can be together. God bless you all.Y ou rs in His s e r v i c e ,Bruce and Karolyn
