!ylla#usThe - th ear Engineering onours Thesis aims to provide students $ith the opportunit to carrout a defined piece of independent research or design $or% in a setting and in a manner thatfosters the development of engineering s%ills in research or design2 These s%ills include thecapacit to define a research or design uestion, sho$ing ho$ it relates to e4isting %no$ledge, identif ing the tools needed to investigate the uestion, carr ing out the research or design in a

s stematic $a , anal sing the results o'tained and presenting the outcomes in a report that isclear, coherent and logicall structured2

Students are as%ed to $rite a thesis 'ased on a research or ma+or design pro+ect, $hich is veroften related to some aspect of a staff mem'er5s research interests2 Some pro+ects $ill 'ee4perimental in nature, others ma involve computer6'ased simulation, feasi'ilit studies or thedesign, construction and testing of e uipment2 7n the normal course of events some or all of thetheoretical, developmental and e4perimental aspects of research or design $or% are e4pected ina thesis2 These aspects ma 'e either directed ' the supervisor or 'e of an original nature, 'utin either case the student is responsi'le for the e4ecution of the practical $or% and the generalla out and content of the thesis itself2

    7n underta%ing the pro+ect, students $ill learn ho$ to e4amine pu'lished and e4perimental data,set o'+ectives, organi8e a program of $or% and anal se results2 The $ill also 'e e4pected toevaluate these results in relation to e4isting %no$ledge2 The thesis $ill 'e +udged on the e4tentand ualit of the student5s original $or% and particularl ho$ critical, perceptive andconstructive he or she has 'een in assessing his9her $or% and that of others2 Students $ill also

'e re uired to present the results of their findings to their peers and supervisors as part of aseminar program2

7t is not e4pected that a thesis at this level $ill represent a significant contri'ution to ne$%no$ledge nor is it e4pected that theses $ill resolve great intellectual pro'lems2 The time frameavaila'le for the thesis is simpl too short to permit students to tac%le comple4 or difficult

pro'lems2 7ndeed, a %e aim of the thesis is to specif a research or design topic that arousessufficient intellectual curiosit , and presents an appropriate range and diversit of technical andconceptual challenges, $hile remaining managea'le and allo$ing achieva'le outcomes $ithinthe time and resources availa'le2 7t is important that the topic 'e of sufficient scope andcomple4it to allo$ a student to learn their craft and demonstrate their research or design s%ills2E uall imperative is that the tas% not 'e so demanding as to elude completion2

$earnin% outcomesThe learning outcomes for this course are:

    12 A'ilit to plan and underta%e a research or ma+or design pro+ect!2 )roposal for the intended $or% including setting o'+ectives, organi8ation of a program

of $or% and devising an e4perimental or developmental program

32 An a'ilit to design and conduct e4periments9design $or% and to anal se and interpretdata from those e4periments or design

-2 )reparation and su'mission of a thesis at the end of the second semester detailing theconte4t of the pro'lem, relevant 'ac%ground research and outcomes of the investigation

Choice o" topic and super&isor7f starting Honours Thesis A , the topic and supervisor should have 'een registered $ith thethesis coordinator at the end of the previous semester2 7n an case it must 'e finali8ed $ith thethesis coordinator ' the first $ee% of lectures of the semester in $hich ou are enrolled in

;ou must consult regularl 'at least once a "ortni%ht and pre"era#ly once a wee() $ith our supervisor for the duration of the thesis pro+ect2 7f the supervisor is to 'e a'sent for more thana'out t$o $ee%s during semester, an associate supervisor should 'e appointed during thea'sence2 /hile there can 'e no rigid template for student6supervisor interaction, there areseveral critical roles that a supervisor is generall e4pected to perform2 These include:

    • providing advice a'out the limits or 'oundaries of the thesis• guiding students to appropriate reading < and discussing this material• helping to develop a 'road timeta'le for completion of the thesis• ensuring that students understand the relevant theories, and have the technical s%ills

needed to ans$er the uestions posed in the research• fostering $riting s%ills ' $a of constructive commentar• 'eing availa'le to meet regularl and fre uentl $ith the student for discussion• providing prompt feed'ac% on drafts and papers su'mitted for comment• setting goals and monitoring student progress• encouraging student participation in the $ider intellectual life of the )rogram, School

    and =niversit

E uall important is that students recognise $hat supervisors are not there to do2 This includes:• supervisors should not provide students $ith topics, research uestions, and detailed

research plans: these tas%s are integral to the process of learning to conductresearch9design and are the +o' of the student < $ith the supervisor acting as guide

    • supervisors should not $rite < nor re6$rite < the thesis2 >lear, concise $rittene4pression is a fundamental o'+ective of engineering training $hich needs to 'e learned2

*or(load Requirements7t is e4pected that students $ill spend at least one to t$o full da s per $ee% throughout thecourse of the ear underta%ing 'ac%ground research $or%, organi8ing their program of $or%,

preparing and anal sing results and $riting the thesis document itself2

+ssessment CriteriaAssessment for this =nit of Stud $ill 'e 'ased on the evaluation of the progress reportsu'mitted at the end of onours Thesis A, the presentation of a seminar relating to their chosentopic and the thesis document itself2 The final grade for thesis is 'ased on the $or% done in#oth onours Thesis A and onours Thesis ?2 A mar% for onours Thesis A and onoursThesis ? $ill then 'e assigned 'ased on the com'ined mar% of the progress report, seminar

presentation and the evaluation of the thesis follo$ing completion of onours Thesis ?2 Thefinal honours thesis mar% $ill consist of the follo$ing:

12 )rogress *eport #10@& < The progress report should at minimum include an

introduction and literature surve in a form similar to that $hich $ill appear in the finalthesis, a ta'le of contents sho$ing proposed chapter and section headings, and a reportof not more than 1000 $ords descri'ing the $or% carried out thus far2 Students shouldconsult their supervisor $hen preparing the report2

!2 Seminar #10@& < The seminar provides students $ith an opportunit to present their $or% to other students and staff2 7t is a compulsor part of thesis2 The evaluation $ill

'e 'ased on feed'ac% from staff as $ell as a peer evaluation component2 7t $ill 'e 'ased on the ualit and coherence of the presentation, the technical content and thehandling of uestions from the audience2

32 onours Thesis *eport # 0@& < The thesis itself is the final document descri'ing the$or% underta%en2 7t $ill 'e assessed on the ualit of the su'mitted document, theinitiative sho$n ' the student, the contri'ution of the student to the pro+ect, the

attention paid to the relevant pu'lished literature, the presentation of results and thevalidit of conclusions dra$n2 The thesis will be assessed by the supervisor and also byothers not specialized in the field of the thesis topic.
