Americold owns and operates over 182 temperature-controlled warehouses in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, China, Argentina and Canada with a total capacity of over 1.1 billion cubic feet of storage. Americold is committed to saving energy as part of their corporate sustainability program at their facilities throughout the world. The Challenge Americold contacted SmartWatt Energy, Inc., to perform construction-grade energy audits and complete value-engineered designs of new energy-efficient lighting systems for twenty-eight facilities across the United States. SmartWatt Energy’s SmartLighting® solution featured LED fixtures, based on their superior performance in cold storage applications, combined with motion controls. Americold’s goals were to dramatically improve the quality and quantity of light, and to save energy. Based on the impressive results of the SmartLighting® solution proposed, Americold is currently working with SmartWatt Energy to implement projects at additional facilities nationwide. Smart Savings In addition to improved conditions, Americold will enjoy the following realized energy savings from this lighting upgrade project: Utility Rebates: $1,489,422 Annual Energy Savings: 35,819,722 kWh Green Impact This project has led to the equivalent reduction of 55,716,556 pounds of carbon dioxide, removing pollutants from the air and having the same effect on the environment as: Americold lighting energy savings Commercial, Industrial & Institutional Division Refrigerated & Freezer Warehouse Case Study Energy Inc. ® Americold Refrigerated & Freezer Warehouses Replacement of HID lighting fixtures with energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures and motion controls helped Americold reduce lighting-related energy consumption by as much as 92%, with an average payback period of just 1.5 years.
