Paul Rudd has made a ca-reer of playing the funnysidekick, the affable

yet frustrated dad and thelovable loser, charming au-diences with his brightsmile and impeccable co-medic timing.

On Dec. 20, he dusts offa bottle of Sex Panthercologne and reprises hisrole as the mustachioed“ladies man” Brian Fan-tana in Anchorman 2:The Legend Continues.

We caught up withRudd at his New YorkCity office recently to chatabout how his life haschanged since filming thefirst Anchorman 10 yearsago, what it’s like workingwith Will Ferrell and AdamMcKay and why his daughtermight be the only person inAmerica who prefers him with athick black mustache.

Tell us a little bit about theAnchorman sequel and howit differs from the first film.

It’s been tricky so far to get into specifics.There’s a twist in this one, but I can’t reallygive it away.

It takes place at the dawn of the 24-hournews cycle. I can tell you this: it has a pointof view and there is a story and it’s ridicu-lous. It’s even more bizarre than the firstone, I think. My take on it is obviouslyskewed and I’m biased, but I think what’sappealing about the first one lives on in thisone. Adam and Will know this world so welland know these characters so well. Theydon’t have it in them to play it safe andrecycle; they take big swings.

How have you changed in the last 10years, career-wise and personally? Areyou different in some ways than you were

the first time around?Yeah, I feel different. So muchhas happened in my life in theinterim, personally. I didn’thave kids the last time around,crazy amounts of things havehappened that changed who Iam. My dad died. I’m older.

My whole view about every-thing is different. Maybe onsome subconscious level, thecharacter is different. Itprobably is different withsome slight gradation, be-cause I’m different.

You’re best known forroles in which you play the

affable, but frustrated dad(Knocked Up and This is 40)

or the loveable loser (Our Idi-ot Brother). Was it refreshing

to step back into the shoes of thearrogant Brian Fantana, who is

convinced he’s a ladies man?It’s a fun character to play and a

fun group of guys to be workingwith, for sure. When I read thefirst script many years ago, Ithought it was the funniestscript I’d read in years.

Will Ferrell makes me laugh sohard. Ron Burgundy issuch a fully realized

buffoon.Now that you have a

family (son Jack, 7 anddaughter Darby, 3), do

you try to work less? Hasit changed your career?I have worked less this year.

People might find that hard tobelieve, because the cable net-works play these movies over andover, again, so there’s an omni-presence. My kids know thatthere are some aspects to our lifethat are different from other fam-ilies, but for the most part, we’rekind of typical.

Any fun holiday plans?We’re all going bungee jump-

ing as a family. No, I plan onbeing with my family for the holi-days but I have no specific funplans. We like to just be togetherand laugh.

Are your kids aware of themovies you’re in?

My daughter mentioned BrianFantana the other day. She likesit better when I have a mustache.I’d rather we go see somethingdifferent as a family than a movie

There’s really only handful ofscripts you read that yousay, ‘I just want to keepthis script and read it oc-casionally for pleasure.’

But it’s a blast playingthat kind of guy, especial-ly amongst those three oth-er guys, because they exist intheir own world where the rulesthey’ve created for themselvesonly make sense to themselves.We can all say things as thosecharacters that we can never sayas another character. Part of whatmakes them palatable to an audi-ence is there is some kind ofsweetness to it. They’re there foreach other; they don’t judge eachother; they never call each otherout on their idiocy. Maybe theydon’t realize it, maybe that’s thething that makes it work.

Some actors avoid seeingthemselves on the big screen.

I’m the worst judge of all. I’mtoo close to it, so I have a veryskewed perspective. When I didsee (Anchorman 2), there were afew scenes that had me cryinglaughing.
