VP Technical Report
I hope everyone who attended the presentation by Gary Lederman from Fire End and Croker Corporation at the May meeting heard something of value. I understand it was informative and interesting. Thank you for your confidence in me by electing me your new president at the May meeting. I have just returned from the annual president’s meeting attended by all the incoming and veteran presidents from all the chapters in Region 5. This meeting was more upbeat than previous meetings I have attended with regards to the state of ASPE National. The Board seems to have their act together and present a smoothly run organization. Announced with the meeting small increases in dues in a couple of categories. Associate member dues now equal the amount paid by full members and the retired members’ dues were also increased. Student dues were not changed although I proposed a free first year to attract students to join as I felt exposure to ASPE would induce them to renew the following year once they saw the value of the membership. The comment was that students could afford the dues as they would pay that much for a pitcher of beer on a Friday night. I felt unless they could see the value of the membership they would choose the beer as they are aware of the value of a pitcher of beer. The PE Working Group is still working hard to develop a plumbing section in the PE testing. Please let me know if you have any personal contact with the licensing board. The St. Louis County Building Commission has been unable to have a hearing on the proposed St. Louis County Plumbing Code ordinance. Keep an eye on the meeting notice in the following URL if you are interested in reading a proposed copy of the ordinance and learning of a scheduled meeting. IAPMO Acquires National Standard Plumbing Code Ontario, Calif. (June 6, 2017) - On June 1, the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials® (IAPMO) and the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association (PHCC) executed an agreement transferring ownership of the National Standard Plumbing Code™ (NSPC) to IAPMO. The transfer encompasses all editions of the NSPC, including the 2018 edition. New Jersey and several locations in Maryland are the primary adopters and users of the NSPC. Once the 2018 NSPC is published for adoption, IAPMO will provide all code support services to all jurisdictions utilizing the NSPC. PHCC and IAPMO will work together to develop co-branded educational services such as code update classes, code workshops, and other training and educational programs for the NSPC. These educational programs shall be offered to PHCC, IAPMO members, and to the industry. ASSE International Publishes Revised Backflow Requirements for Commercial Dishwashing Ma-chines Mokena, Ill. (June 14, 2017) — ASSE 1004-2017, Performance Requirements for Commercial Dish-washing Machines, has been designated as an American National Standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and is now available for purchase. ASSE 1004 applies to backflow prevention devices used on potable water supplies connected to com-mercial dishwashing machines. The backflow prevention devices used in these applications include at-mospheric type vacuum breakers complying with ASSE 1001, hose connection vacuum breakers com-plying with ASSE 1011, pressure vacuum breakers complying with ASSE 1020, hose connection back-flow preventers complying with ASSE 1052, spill-resistant vacuum breakers complying with ASSE 1056, and air gaps. Requirements in ASSE 1004 include proper locations of backflow prevention devices and water supply piping, performance requirements and compliance testing for backsiphonage, and re-quirements for materials, markings, and instructions.
