TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2015 AMERICAN PHAROAH MORNING LINE PICK Triple Crown hero American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) will break from gate four when he goes postward for the final time in his racing career in Saturday’s GI Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland. The sophomore, who will face nine foes in the $5-million centerpiece of championship weekend, was installed the 6-5 morning-line favorite as he looks to rebound from a runner-up effort in the Aug. 29 GI Travers S. “The horse drew very well,” trainer Bob Baffert commented after the draw. “I’m happy with his post. But the main thing is the horse is doing really well.” Second choice in the Classic is multiple Eclipse champion Beholder (Henny Hughes), who drew the 10 hole during Monday’s post position draw held at Keeneland. Earlier in the day, the two favorites turned in impressive works with American Pharoah zipping four furlongs in :46.60 at Santa Anita and Beholder sizzling five furlongs at Keeneland :59.40. Both were bullet moves. The contentious 10-horse Classic field includes nine Grade/Group 1 winners and Victor Espinoza, who will ride American Pharoah, acknowledged it would not be just a race between the top two favorites. “Beholder is tough,” Espinoza said. “She’s a great filly, but I don’t worry about just one. I think about the whole field. There is a reason why they are in the race, because they are all shooting to win, and they’re all going to try to beat American Pharoah again.” Last year’s GI Belmont S. winner Tonalist (Tapit) and late- running GI Whitney H. winner Honor Code (A.P. Indy) are co- third choice in the Classic at 6-1. Tonlist will break from the rail, while Honor Code drew post nine. In all, 175 horses, including 10 also-eligibles, were entered for 13 championships races to be held for the first time at Lexington’s historic Keeneland Friday and Saturday and worth more than $26 million. PHAROAH IMPRESSES IN FINAL WORK Triple Crown hero American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile)

turned in the final work of his racing career Monday at Santa

Anita, zipping four

furlongs in :46.60 and

galloping out five furlongs

in :59 2/5. It was the

second fastest of 33 at

the distance Monday.

Santa Anita clockers

caught American Pharoah

in splits of 11 4/5, 23 1/5,

34 3/5 and 46 3/5.

“His work was very impressive,” trainer Bob Baffert reported

via text. “Very happy with the way he is coming into race.”

Racing Manager Justin Zayat was also pleased with the work. “He worked in :46, but it was :46 easy,” said Zayat. “We’revery, very happy. We could not be happier with him. He’s righton target. He always works well every week, so it’s no surpriseto us. But we can see that right now he’s in the zone. He’sfeeling it, and that’s the feeling he’s giving everyone right now.All systems are go and we’re expecting a huge race from him.” Saturday’s GI Breeders’ Cup Classic will be the final race ofAmerican Pharoah’s career and his first start since finishingsecond in the Aug. 29 GI Travers S.

BULLET FOR BEHOLDER Spendthrift Farm’s Beholder (Henny Hughes) sizzled fivefurlongs at Keeneland Monday, covering the distance in a bullet:59.40 in preparation forSaturday’s GI Breeders’ CupClassic. “She went very well; a nicetune-up,” reported trainer RichardMandella. “We picked her up a bitat the eighth pole and she finishedvery well. I’m ready.” Owner B. Wayne Hughes added, “I’m glad we’re here. I’m verygrateful to have a mare like her.”

APPEALING TALE, STICKSSTATELYDUDE OUT The Breeders’ Cup lost a pair of expected runners whenAppealing Tale (Tale of the Cat) and Sticksstatelydude (FirstDude) were ruled out of championship weekend with injuries.Trainer Peter Miller reported GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Milecontender Appealing Tale came out of his work Saturday with aninjured ankle. “I left there Saturday morning thinking I would win the DirtMile and he’s out of the race on Monday,” said Miller. “Here-injured his right front ankle, the one we took a chip out of acouple of years ago. We haven’t decided yet what to do.” GI Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile contenderSticksstatelydue was also ruled out of Saturday’s race. “He has a minor tendon sheath strain,” trainer Greg Burchellsaid Monday morning. “It is not career-ending, but ourveterinarian Dr. [Otis] Cheney recommended he not run and wewill go with that. It’s unfortunate, but we’re just grateful that itwasn’t something more serious.”

ASMUSSEN RUNNERS ON TRACK Trainer Steve Asmussen’s Breeders’ Cup quartet each workedfour furlongs at Keeneland Monday and exercise rider CarlosRosas was aboard for all four of the works. Winchell Thoroughbreds’ champion Untapable (Tapit) coveredthe distance in :50.20 as she prepares to defend her title inFriday’s GI Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Fellow Winchellhomebred Tapiture (Tapit), looking to improve on his runner-upeffort in last year’s GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, went in :49.20. Jerry Durant’s Holy Boss (Street Boss), most recently fourthover a sloppy track in the GIII Phoenix S., went in :49.60 inpreparation for the GI Twinspires Breeders’ Cup Sprint and LNJFoxwoods’ GI Frizette S. winner Nickname (Scat Daddy)worked in :49.60 ahead of the GI 14 Hands Winery Breeders’Cup Juvenile Fillies. After the works, Asmussen recapped the morning. “Untapable is our favorite, a true champion and we are justblessed to be around her,” Asmussen said. “Tapiture has toutedhimself very strongly since [winning] the [Sept. 26 GIII] Ack Ack[H.]. I think it’ll take the race of his life, but I think he’s sitting onthe race of his life. I think what he’ll do is dependent uponwhere you’re drawn and who’s where. I think all those decisionscan only be made once the draw is out.” Asmussen continued, “The thing I feel very strongly about isthat Holy Boss got here doing something. Who you’re in withshouldn’t change how you go from point A to point B. He’s agreat, big-bodied horse and I don’t think that he wouldappreciate off-going. Nickname is an extremely talented fillythat trains extremely impressively. The Juvenile Fillies has quiteobviously some great 2-year-old fillies in there, but I feel reallygood about our chances.”

SUPER MAJESTY TUNES UP Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer sent Super Majesty (Super Saver)

Keeneland Monday in

preparation for a start in

Saturday’s GI Twinspires

Breeders’ Cup F/M Sprint. The

sophomore filly, coming off a

win in the GIII Dogwood S.,

completed the work in :48.00.

“She looked really good this

morning,” Hollendorfer said.

“She’s doing really well so that’s why we want to run her in this

race. She’s handling the track very well.”

CURALINA TO DISTAFF Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners’ Curalina (Curlin), cross-

entered in both the GI Twinspires Breeders’ Cup F/M Sprint and

GI Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, will start in Friday’s Distaff.

“We felt she was accomplished around two turns,” trainer

Todd Pletcher said of the GI Acorn S. winner. “We just felt it was

a better natural trip for her. She’s trained exceptionally well.

She’s versatile enough that it was certainly worth investigating

the F/M Sprint. In that type of racing, there’s a lot of early

speed. A race like that could set up for her, but at the end of the

day, we felt she was better at running a mile and an eighth.”

Pletcher will also saddle Got Lucky (A.P. Indy) and

Stopchargingmaria (Tale of the Cat) in the Distaff, as well as

eight other Breeders’ Cup runners. Among his championship

contingent are Dirt Mile contender Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s

Song), Mile hopeful Mshawish (Medaglia d’Oro) and Turf runner

Red Rifle (Giant’s Causeway).

“All of my horses have had their final breezes,” Pletcher said.

“We’ve had a good couple weeks of training here; we had some

good final breezes here. Everyone seems to be doing well.”

LEA TO DIRT MILE Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider’s Lea (First Samurai),

cross-entered in the GI Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and GI

Breeders’ Cup Mile, will go postward in the Dirt Mile, trainer Bill

Mott confirmed Monday.

“He’s a Grade I winner on the dirt and he has a track record on

the dirt,” Mott

said after the

GI Donn H.

winner had

worked four

furlongs over the

main track at

Keeneland

Monday in a

bullet :47.40. “It’s

looks to me like

the turf is going

to be extremely soft. It was soft today. I think if we get another

couple of inches of rain, it is going to be soft on Saturday. I don’t

have a crystal ball, but that is the best reading, my best

‘guestimate.’ I think he is a little compromised on a soft turf. He

loves the turf; he gets over ‘good’ ground, but if it turns up soft,

it takes away our best chances.”

Mott will be represented in the Mile by Tourist (Tiznow), who

breezed four furlongs on the grass Monday in :51.20. He also

sent out GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf hopeful

Harmonize (Scat Daddy) for a four-furlong drill on the dirt in

:48.80.

“They went very nicely,” Mott said. “We were pleased with all

of our breezers this morning. Nothing went the wrong way.”

HONG KONG TRIP PLANNED FOR CIRRUS Cirrus Des Aigles (Fr) (Even Top {Ire}) will be back on his

travels soon as trainer Corine Barande-Barbe outlined a trip to

Hong Kong in December for the 9-year-old following his

respectable fourth place in Sunday’s G1 Prix Royal-Oak at Saint-

cloud. Cirrus Des Aigles

finished fourth in last year’s

G1 Hong Kong Cup but his

target this year will be the G1

Hong Kong Vase over a mile

and half, a race won last year

by fellow French runner

Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

"He has come out of the race

well and enjoyed his canter

this morning,” reported Barande-Barbe on Monday. “He has had

a summer break this year so he is fresh - I know the horse well.

He ran in the Hong Kong Cup last year but his target will be the

Vase this time around." Though he has run a few below par

races this year the trainer has no firm thoughts on retiring Cirrus

Des Aigles and added, "He will decide whether he stays in

training next year and will tell me when he is not enjoying it."

BALLYDOYLE COLT TOPS HIT DAY ONEBy Chris McGrath

After a sluggish start, the first day of the Horses-in-Training

Sale at Tattersalls was suddenly shaken into life when a

3-year-old half-brother to Mastercraftsman (Ire) (Danehill

Dancer {Ire}) sent over from Ballydoyle was claimed in a matter

of seconds by a classic poker player's stunt. With many of the

more obvious prospects lurking later in the catalogue,

purchasers had spent a beautiful fall day in Newmarket

cautiously sifting the wheat from the chaff. Despite a significant

rally in prices later in the session, the average slipped 6 per cent

on last year's opening day, from 23,700gns to 22,390. An

aggregate of 5,105,000gns changed hands, compared with

5,451,000 in 2014, again a decline of 6 per cent, with 50 of the

278 lots offered failing to find a buyer - representing a

three-point dip in clearances to 82 per cent. The median was

down 14 per cent, to 12,000 from 14,000gns.

But the arrival in the ring of lot 289, as night fell, proved the

cue for a theatrical gamble that would give the whole sale an

overdue kick-start. Grant Pritchard-Gordon, of Badgers

Bloodstock, went straight for the jugular with a bid for

Prospector (Galileo {Ire}) as exotic for its precision as its size.

Not 200,000gns, nor 250,000 - but 240,000. By the time any

potential rivals for the colt had overcome their confusion, the

hammer was down. "I thought you might have missed it,"

Pritchard-Gordon grinned to the press, signing the chit barely a

minute after the colt had entered the ring. "It's a tactic I've seen

quite a lot in Australia - they call it a 'king bid' - and it was for an

Australian client who has

used it successfully in the

past, and was keen to utilize

it again."

A past patron, Paul Makin,

has often been associated

with a flamboyant bidding

strategy, trying to blow the

opposition out of the water

with a knockout opening bid.

But Pritchard-Gordon was

reluctant to divulge the identity of the colt's new owner. The

one certainty is that Prospector had greatly magnified his value

just two days previously, when following up a recent maiden

success at Navan in a competitive Leopardstown handicap.

Nonetheless a Coolmore partnership had remained prepared to

cull the eighth most expensive hip at the Keeneland July Sale of

2013--a colt by their champion stallion, Galileo, out of Starlight

Dreams (Black Tie Affair), the dam of MG1SW Mastercraftsman,

himself a promising Coolmore sire. "This horse has the profile of

one that's going to go on improving at four," Pritchard-Gordon

said of Prospector. "He cost $1.4 million as a yearling, he's a

half-brother to a very

under-rated, top stallion

and, most importantly,

he is the type of very

nice staying horse that

should do well in

Australia."

It had taken over five

hours for the sale to

register its first six-figure

tag, at lot 201. It was no

surprise to learn that the

man who had arrested the initial freefall in the various

year-on-year indices was Anthony Stroud, who signed a docket

of 155,000gns for Red Galileo (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

As ever, Stroud has been sieving the catalogue for horses

eligible for the Dubai Carnival, and while Red Galileo had only

won one of his 21 career starts for Ed Dunlop, he has

consistently maintained an official rating above 100 ever since

finishing fifth as an outsider for the 2014 G1 Epsom Derby. "He's

a good horse and one with a rating good enough for Dubai,"

Stroud confirmed. "His profile fits and he's obviously by an

outstanding stallion." Stroud, who saw off strong Australian

interest for a stablemate of Red Cadeaux (GB) (Cadeaux

Genereux) and Trip To Paris (Ire) (Champs Elysees {GB}),

professed to have no idea who will train the gelding. Dandy

Nicholls, overhearing that there might be a vacancy,

mischievously stepped in to volunteer his credentials. It may or

may not prove significant that Simon Crisford, the former

Godolphin manager who has made such an excellent start to his

new career as a trainer, had been standing alongside as Stroud

was bidding.

Next to break six figures was lot 258, Classic Villager (GB)

(Authorized {Ire}). Winner of three of his four starts since joining

Chris Wall, the gelding had caught the imagination of Stephen

Hillen, who bid 110,000gns on

behalf of Brian and Rosie Hargie.

"We looked at all the videos and

he's one horse I really wanted

coming here," Hillen explained.

"He's got progressive form, and

Authorizeds do seem to progress

really well with age. I'd envisage

him improving next year and

aiming at the top mile-and-a-half

handicaps. He travels really well in his races and I like that kind

of horse - you can hold onto them that bit longer, and they only

need to race for a furlong." Hillen also signed for lot 343,

Flaming Spear (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), on behalf of the colt's

present trainer, Kevin Ryan. Winner of his sole start at two, he

was regarded as a Classic prospect for Qatar Racing in the spring

but disappeared after a midfield finish in the Poule d'Essai des

Poulains. Ryan's faith was evidently not diminished when he was

beaten on his first start since, at Chelmsford earlier in the

month, as Hillen saw off Jeremy Brummitt with a bid of

125,000gns to take the colt back to Yorkshire. "It just hasn't

happened for him this year, for one reason or another," Hillen

said. "He probably wants a bit of dig and every time he's been

declared the ground has been fast. He's still a gorgeous colt."

Albeit not for long - he is likely to be a gorgeous gelding when

next seen.

Another trainer anxious to retain the services of a horse

discarded by Qatar Racing was Charlie Fellowes, who paid

100,000gns to buy back lot 395 Wet Sail (Henrythenavigator)

had made the frame in a listed race at Chester during the

summer and resumed an upward curve by winning a conditions

race at Salisbury earlier in the month. "He's staying in the yard

for a new owner," confirmed Will Douglass, of Charlie

Gordon-Watson Bloodstock. "He's a fun, solid horse, the type

that's hard to get hold of, and Charlie really wanted to have him

back." The sale of lot 315 for 100,000gns represented good

business for Scuderia Blueberry, purchasers of Gerrard's Quest

(GB) (Captain Gerrard {Ire}) for 13,000gns in the same ring as a

yearling 12 months previously. The colt had finished third for

Marco Botti in a Group 2 in Italy eight days before the sale and is

now off to Qatar where his new owner, Adel Al-Muslamani,

hopes that he can emulate his success there with a 120,000gns

purchase at last year's sale, Bronze Maquette (Ire) (Dark Angel

{Ire}).

Le Maitre Chat (Tale Of The Cat) volunteered himself as having

options both on the Flat and over jumps when he finished

strongly for a close fifth in the historic Cesarewitch Handicap

earlier in the month. But it so happens that his trainer, Ian

Williams, is an adept operator in both codes and duly went to

82,000 guineas to ensure that lot 197 remained in his care. "He

ran so well in the Cesarewitch, and that was his first start for

us," Williams explained. "I think he's a guaranteed runner at

Royal Ascot next year, over two and a half miles. But in the

meantime I hope jumping hurdles will make a man of him."

A poignant footnote came in a final draft of horses from the

local Carlburg stable of Clive Brittain, the octogenarian pioneer

who is handing in his training licence at the end of the season.

Brittain started his career as a stable lad in the 1940s and

opened new horizons for British trainers with their first

Breeders' Cup success, through Pebbles in the 1985 GI Breeders’

Cup Turf, and the following year was thwarted only by

Ferdinand when saddling Bold Arrangement in the GI Kentucky

Derby. Though his trademark enthusiasm remains undiminished,

Brittain's is retiring to care for his unwell wife. Few proved

inclined to stoke the embers of a ground-breaking career,

however, 11 lots fetching an aggregate of just 50,900gns.

MARCEL PART OF BIG SATURDAY

FOR BALLYLINCHWhen I visited Ballylinch Stud in County Kilkenny

in 1997, it was apparent that this historic stud had

a past, a present and a future.

The purpose of the visit was to interview stud manager John

O’Connor about the acquisition of a new stallion, the G1 King

George winner King’s Theatre. This son of Sadler’s Wells was to

become another champion sire for the stud, but as a sire of

jumpers, unlike the stallions

which put Ballylinch on the

map.

I have to admit it was the

stud’s past which really

interested me. The stud

had been bought by Major

Dermot McCalmont to

stand The Tetrarch, a horse

who has been billed as “one

of the most remarkable horses ever seen on the English Turf;

and possibly the fastest.” Because of his coloring--gray with

white splodges--he was variously nicknamed The Rocking Horse

and later The Spotted Wonder.

To be as succinct as possible, The Tetrarch won all seven of his

starts as a 2-year-old in 1913 and such was his dominance of his

generation that he was rated 10 pounds superior to the

next-best juvenile. Then his luck ran out. A recurring injury

prevented him from racing again and his stallion career at

Ballylinch became the stuff of nightmares for any stallion

manager.

The Biographical Encyclopaedia of British Flat Racing

summarised it as follows:

“Like many other great horses, The Tetrarch had certain

peculiarities and one of his was a marked lack of interest in sex.

It required a lot of patience and perseverance to induce him to

cover any mares at all and he would seize on any excuse to

avoid carrying out his duties as a stallion. His owner described

The Tetrarch’s attitude as ‘monastic in the extreme.’ In

consequence The Tetrarch was a bad foal-getter and got steadily

worse in that respect. He had been sterile for 10 years before

his death in 1935. He only got 130 foals altogether, of which 80

were winners. In his closing years this once phenomenal

racehorse was completely white in colour, very dipped in the

back, and used to be ridden down with the letters to the local

post-office.” Cont. p15

The box which housed The Tetrarch is still in use at Ballylinch,

and the paddock in which The Tetrarch spent his days as a

stallion is still there, surrounded by very high stone walls. I

believe this type of paddock was the norm for that era, but it

must have been rather like being kept in solitary confinement.

Perhaps The Tetrarch could be excused some of his quirks.

The achievements of his progeny certainly entitled him to total

forgiveness. He became champion sire in 1919 and sired a

champion sire in his 2,000 Guineas winner Tetratema, who also

stood at Ballylinch following a career built largely on his

considerable speed. The Tetrarch’s most famous speedster,

though, was the legendary filly Mumtaz Mahal.

Apparently gray Thoroughbreds were comparatively rare a

hundred years ago but they are now much more common,

thanks to The Tetrarch’s descendants, led by Mumtaz Mahal.

Tapit, of course, is gray, and the first nine mares in his female

line were all registered as gray or roan. In fact his fourth dam

Foggy Note was a daughter of two grays, The Axe II and Silver

Song. Both of these number The Tetrarch among their

ancestors.

The Tetrarch has become so ubiquitous that he lurks in the

distant ancestry of three young Ballylinch stallions which have

been represented by group-winning juveniles over the last

couple of weeks.

The first-crop sire Dream Ahead notched up group winnernumber two when Donjuan Triumphant took the G2 Criteriumde Maisons-Laffitte. Then, three days ago, Ballylinch enjoyed atrue 15 minutes of fame, with the potential for a much longerspell in the spotlight. Firstly the 3.30 at Leopardstown, the G3Killavullan S., was won impressively by Blue de Vega, a colt fromthe second crop by the 2010 Prix du Jockey-Club winner Lope deVega. Then the 3.45 at Doncaster, the G1 Racing Post Trophy, went to Marcel, a lightly raced colt by the 2007 Prix duJockey-Club hero Lawman. Cont. p16

It is far from impossible that Marcel and Blue de Vega will

come up against each other in the 2,000 Guineas next May.

I will concentrate here on Marcel, as his victory came in a race

which has been won this century by numerous future Classic

winners, such as High Chaparral, Brian Boru, American Post,

Motivator, Authorized, Camelot and Kingston Hill.

His victory confirms expectations that Lawman is poised for a

rewarding time over the next few years. He was one of those

numerous young stallions who found it hard to maintain his

initial momentum. After covering 114 mares at €25,000 in his

first season in 2008, his second book fell to 95 mares, at

€20,000. The next step was to reduce Lawman’s fee to €15,000

for his third, fourth and fifth seasons, but it wasn’t all bad news.

With his fee lowered and his first crop proving popular in the

sales ring, the numerical slide was halted. Then good winners

began to emerge from his first two crops. The St James’s Palace

S. winner Most Improved led a team of four group winners from

Lawman’s first crop and the second crop did even better, with a

pair of Group 1 winners among its four group scorers. One of

those Group 1 winners, Just The Judge took the Irish 1,000

Guineas in 2013, plus the following year’s E.P. Taylor S.

With only one group winner so far from Lawman’s first two

€15,000 crops, he temporarily went off the boil. Marcel, though,

comes from the third of those crops and--as I said earlier--

Lawman should shortly be reaping the rewards from those early

successes. His fee went back up to €20,000 in 2013 and then to

€25,000 the following year. The yearlings from that €20,000

crop included individuals which sold for 450,000gns, 440,000gns

(to Coolmore), 230,000gns and €270,000.

Marcel cost only 26,000gns as a yearling in a private

transaction at Tattersalls. The youngster’s catalogue page

showed that his second dam, the Alleged mare Absaar, was a

winning half-sister to a pair of Group 1 winners. One of them,

the Nureyev mare Annoconnor, was a Grade I winner over a

mile and an eighth on turf and dirt back in 1988. The other,

Roberto’s son At Talaq, won the Grand Prix de Paris in the days

when it was over 1 7/8 miles and later added the Melbourne

Cup. The catalogue didn’t mention that At Talaq had finished

fourth in the Derby, or that the family had been represented by

a much more recent Derby fourth. That was Arod, the 2014

fourth whose second dam, Pattimech, was a sister to

Annoconnor.

I don’t know whether it is just coincidence that Arod and

Marcel are both trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam. No doubt his

fears that Marcel will lack the stamina for the Derby are based

on Arod’s record. Although Arod’s sire Teofilo is a markedly

stronger influence for stamina than Lawman, the colt’s racing

career has been reinvigorated by a drop back to a mile this year.

Arod is so effective at this shorter distance that he was beaten

only half a length by the top miler Solow in the G1 Sussex S.

Doubts about Marcel’s ability to stay a mile and a half are also

engendered by the fact that Munjiz, a brother to his unraced

dam Mauresmo, was a smart sprinter at his best. Indeed it was

by only a short head that Munjiz failed to win the G2 Diadem S.

That said, there’s no reason why Marcel shouldn’t stay well

enough for the Prix du Jockey-Club, the mile-and-a-quarter

Classic once won by his sire. Marcel’s broodmare sire, Marju,

made his name principally as a miler, but he would have been a

wide-margin winner of the 1991 Derby had Generous not been

in the line-up. And Mauresmo’s dam, the Alleged mare Absaar,

gained her only victory over 1 3/8 miles, having made her debut

over a mile and three-quarters.

TCA THOROUGHBRED MAKEOVER AN

OVERWHELMING SUCCESS by Jen Roytz

The TCA Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium

this past weekend at the Kentucky Horse Park proved to be

everything organizers wanted it to be and then some. People

came in droves to show, learn about and celebrate what a

retired racehorse can do with just a few months of retraining.

The horse who took top prize as America's Most Wanted

Thoroughbred and the winner's share of the $100,000 in prize

money turned out not to be a jumper or eventer or even an

American, but a Canadian-bred mare who competed in the

competitive trail and freestyle divisions of the competition

ridden by Ontario-based trainer Lindsey Partridge.

Soar, a 2007 mare by Trajectory out of the Mt. Livermore mare

Pyrenee, was bred in

Ontario by Gardiner Farms

Limited and sold as a

yearling at the Canadian

Horse Society 2008

Canadian-bred Yearling

Sale for $32,795 to Ralph

Murray.

She went on to race for

Murray Stable and

notched her first win as a

3-year-old for a claiming tag of $11,500 at Woodbine. She would

go on to find her niche at the $4,000-$5,000 claiming level,

finding her way to the winner's circle eight more times while

racing for various owners at Woodbine Racetrack, Tampa Bay

Downs and Fort Erie Race Track.

Partridge, who has built much of her professional training

career out of finding retired racehorses, training them in the

discipline she feels suits them best, and selling them to riders

looking for dependable show or recreational mounts, found Soar

the way she finds many of her training prospects--via a picture

on Facebook.

"I heard about the Thoroughbred Makeover and wanted to

find a horse to compete in it with because I thought it sounded

like a really fun way to promote the Thoroughbred breed. I

found Soar the same way I find a lot of my project horses--by

seeing a picture on Facebook. I liked the look of her, so I

contacted the seller and bought her," said Partridge. "I'm

actually a jumper rider at heart, but I wanted to show off my

horses' best attributes, so I went cowgirl in the Makeover for

them. Being a Canadian on a Canadian horse and winning the

title of America's Most Wanted Thoroughbred is pretty cool,

eh?"

Partridge competed on both Soar and her other entry in the

Thoroughbred Makeover, Lionofwallstreet (Consolidator--Cold

Chick, by Unbridled) in the Competitive Trail Class (a six-mile

ride on the grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park with one

obstacle per mile) and the Freestyle Class (which gave

competitors free rein to present their horses in any manner that

did not fit into one of the other nine competitive disciplines

offered in order to show off their trainability and talent).

Both of Partridge's horses made it into the finals of the

Competitive Trail Class and Soar earned her way into the finals

of the Freestyle as well, with a routine that showed off her

speed, bravery, ride-ability, jumping skills, movement and more.

"I love the Thoroughbred breed because they have so much

try and so much heart, and they've really been exposed to so

many things already as racehorses," said Partridge. "When they

find that person that they can connect with and learn that you

just want to have a conversation with them and build a

partnership with them, they become so "in your pocket" and

they want to try so hard for you."

While the winners of each of the 10 disciplines each took

home a $5,000 check, it was the Thoroughbreds who were the

real winners. The event brought together members of the

racing, breeding, aftercare, and equestrian communities and

fostered networking and collaboration amongst them all.

"Everyone came together and the different disciplines united

to truly show off the versatility of these horses," said Fawn

Armstrong, who, along with her husband, owns Armur Ranch, a

Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse breeding farm, and also raises

cattle in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Fawn competed on Colonel

Mozey (War Front--Travel Plans, by Notebook), making it to the

finals in the Working Ranch Horse division. She has previously

competed in the Mustang Makeover, finishing in the Top 10.

Armstrong continued, "I never pictured myself using an OTTB

as a ranch horse, but he's turned out to be one of the best I've

ever had. This competition was a blast! I want to do it again…I

will do it again.”

The weekend was also rife with educational opportunities,

with seminars on a variety of Thoroughbred-related topics

throughout the weekend from some of the most notable names

in the fields of veterinary medicine, sport horse training, equine

aftercare and more. Some of the most widely attended lecture

topics included health care and management of the off-track

Thoroughbred, pre-purchase exams for the recently retired

racehorse and the highly anticipated "Picking Prospects," which

featured equestrian celebrities David Hopper, Bernie Traurig,

Denny Emerson and Tiffany Teeter.

More than a few Thoroughbreds changed hands this weekend

as well, thanks to the Thoroughbred Marketplace. On Friday and

Saturday afternoons, horses were paraded in front of

prospective buyers, ridden in small groups for the audience as

their pedigree, skills and selling attributes were discussed by the

announcer. Cont. p2

Godolphin Stable embraced the theme of the weekend

whole-heartedly, bringing a contingent of 20 Thoroughbred

aftercare and welfare professionals from Australia, England,

France, Ireland, Japan, and America to Lexington this weekend

to take part in the Thoroughbred Makeover and network with

each other and with American-based aftercare organizations,

including the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and New

Vocations Racehorse Adoption.

"What a huge showing of Thoroughbreds performing in so

many different disciplines this weekend, from the tight turns of

the polo, barrel and ranch horses, the scope of the show and

field hunters, jumpers and eventers, the gracefulness of the

dressage horses, bravery of trail horses and just the trainability

of the freestyle competitors," said Retired Racehorse Project

president Steuart Pittman. "This weekend was a coming

together of people from so many segments of the horse

business with interests in the Thoroughbred. It was a celebration

of the breed, but it also did a lot to create synergy between the

racing and sport horse communities, which is the goal of the

Retired Racehorse Project."

SHANGHAI BOBBY WEANLING TOPS F-T

SARATOGA FALL SALE The single session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Fall Sale was

held Monday with mixed results as compared to last year’s two-

day sale. A total of 162 horses were sold from the 374 hips

catalogued for an average of $17,493. There were 138 lots that

did not sell for a buy-back rate of 46%. Last year, 431 horses

were catalogued over two sessions. A total of 193 horses sold at

the 2014 sale and 138 RNA’d. The average was $16,612 last year

and the median stayed consistent at $10,000.

A weanling colt by Coolmore’s first-crop sire Shanghai Bobby,

hip 191, topped the sale at $140,000. The New York-bred

weanling was purchased by Adrian Regan and Fergus Galvin’s

Hunter Valley Farm. The gray colt was bred by Hidden Lake Farm

and Anthony Grey and is out of stakes winner Electric Shock

(Cure the Blues). Rhapsody Farm purchased Electric Shock for

$22,000 at the 2012 Keeneland November Sale. Hip 191 was

consigned by RF HF Bloodstock LLC, agent.

BARRETTS FALL SALE TUESDAY The Barretts Fall Sale of Yearlings and Horses of All Ages will be

held Tuesday at Del Mar, with bidding scheduled to begin at

11 a.m. PT. The 214 yearlings catalogued for the one-day

auction will be followed by 85 horses of racing age. During last

year’s sale, 163 yearlings sold for $3,684,700. The average was

$22,606 and the median was $15,000. A filly by Unusual Heat

out of Hotlantic (Stormy Atlantic) brought the sale’s top price,

selling for $175,000 to Joe Ciaglia. Now named Pacific Heat, the

filly was tabbed a ‘TDN Rising Star’ after her debut victory at Los

Alamitos in September. Havens Bloodstock Agency was the

leading consignor in 2014, selling 28 head for $604,200 and an

average of $21,579.

The Jockey Club of Canada Joins Coalition for Racing Integrity:

The Jockey Club of Canada has joined the Coalition for Horse

Racing Integrity, according to a release from the coalition. The

JCC is the second international group to join the group which is

seeking reforms to medication testing and enforcement in

American Thoroughbred racing.

“The border between Canada and the U.S. is one crossed by

thousands of racehorses each year,” said Jeff Begg, Chief

Steward of the Jockey Club of Canada. “The members of the

Jockey Club of Canada are eager to see medication reforms in

the U.S. that will provide certainty and a level playing field no

matter what state or track they’re headed to.” Cont. p3

pensioned from stallion duties and will be retired to Old Friends

in Georgetown.

10 of 24 starts and earnings of over $2.9 million, Alphabet Soup

has since sired 48 stakes winners, among them Grade I winners

Egg Drop and Alphabet Kisses, champions Our New Recruit,

Phantom Light and Sovereign Award winner Alpha Bettor.

"He arrived safely today and looks terrific," Old Friends

President and founder Michael Blowen said of the 24-year-old

MORNING FIRE (c, 2, Friesan Fire--Four Star Morning, by Press

defeating two next-out special weight winners in the process.

The chestnut rallied to cross the wire second in Delaware’s

5 1/2-furlong Strike Your Colors S. Aug. 5, but was disqualified

and placed seventh for interfering with multiple rivals in the

stretch. Recently runner-up behind repeat stakes winner Balk

(Street Boss) in the six-furlong Mark McDermott S. for

Pennsylvania-breds Sept. 6, the juvenile was given a 9-2 chance

in this return to Bensalem. Away without incident, he pressed

the pace through a quarter-mile in :22.71 and gained command

on the turn. Confronted by favored Bird of Trey (Birdstone) in

the stretch, Morning Fire proved resolute and dug in to notch a

2 3/4-length victory over that rival. Lifetime Record: 5-2-1-1,
