In the water resource management business, it’s been said...“You can’t manage what you don’t measure!”
With Alberta’s supply of available irrigation water being stretched to an ever-increasing limit, theirrigation industry has become much more proactive in recognizing the need for better watermanagement through improved control and measurement.
The is an initiative of the WaterResources Branch of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD), to support the industry’smove to adopting enhanced water control and measurement systems.
This project has been made possible through the contributions by many Albertacompanies and agencies. The facility now offers the opportunity to:
1) Support applied research into new flow measurement and control techniques that can beapplicable to southern Alberta conditions.
2) Provide controlled testing of new measurement technologies to evaluate proposed equipment, systems or solutions.
3) Provide a facility for the demonstration of various flow measurement and control techniques, systems and equipment.
4) Provide a “benchmark” facility where the irrigation industry can have their own flowmeasurement equipment tested for accuracy and calibrated against more high-cost high-accuracy flow measurement components.
5) Support the testing and demonstration of water quality monitoring and sampling equipment.
“Water Measurement Demonstration and Testing Facility”
partnership
The site consists of a re-circulating water conveyancesystem as shown in the adjacentdiagram. Both the pipeline andopen channel infrastructure areaccessible for evaluating flowmeasurement technologies.
Along the pipeline, there areseveral measurement andcontrol points as well as accessvaults to the buried pipeline. Thisallows for both the temporaryand permanent installation ofvarious pipeline flowmeasurement devices that canbe tested, demonstrated orcalibrated.
The open channel section of theproject contains six precastconcrete panel controlstructures, four of which allow forthe temporary “drop-in / lift-out”installation of a wide variety offlow control and measurementcomponents, be they varioustypes of weirs, flumes or the like. The other two structures havebeen fitted with automatedcontrol gates, which controlwater levels for diversions intosimulated farm delivery turnoutsor lateral channels.
