Our core values are at the heart of who we are. They represent the best of our club and provide the foundation which guides all of our efforts. Our core values allow us to maintain and strengthen our relationships within the entire community. They remind us of what is most important and keep us focused on the right things.

Our coaches, programs and facilities directly contribute to our success in maximizing the individual development of every player. We consistently look for new and better ways to deliver a first class experience to our members and stakeholders in all we do.

PassionWe are passionate about soccer. For years, we have helped develop a life-long love of the game and sense of fair play in all our players, parents and coaches. We believe that to be seen as a leader we must act as a leader. We strive for innovation within our club and seek to be recognized as a leader in our community. When we see others following our example or recognizing our efforts, then we know we have instilled real passion within our community. Leadership with real purpose and a profound passion for the game will drive us to newer and greater heights.

PossibilityWe believe soccer presents endless possibilities. We provide opportunities for players of all backgrounds and abilities and give back to the game through the varied charitable goals of our tournaments. We seek to create an environment where every person can reach their highest potential. We value the whole person and welcome people of different talents, abilities and experiences. Soccer equalizes inequities and humanizes all people - together we make a difference in our community.Soccer 5 United: F.U.N. Project The Soccer 5 United F.U.N. Project is structured to draw parallels between using these life skills on the field and off the field, at home and at school, giving the children tools to be successful in life.

Program Overview & Mission:

Soccer 5 United F.U.N. Project is an innovative youth character development program for children who attend Elementary Schools throughout the community that have been identified as “at-risk”. At-risk elementary schools are defined as those with 75% or more of their children on the free and reduced lunch program. This program uses soccer as a tool to help fight childhood obesity, promote healthy lifestyles and teach children important life skills. Soccer 5 United will look to partner with a local Hospital to better

operate – providing tons of children with a fun and educational after-school program once a week.

Physical ActivityChildren participate in a 75 minute session once a week to ensure they receive the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise.

Coaches MentorshipEach site is staffed with caring and experienced coaches who serve as mentors that are invested in the successful development of each child. Coaches stress the importance of doing well in school, respect, integrity, diversity, sportsmanship, teamwork, perseverance, healthy lifestyles and avoiding negative influences such as drugs, alcohol, and violence.

NutritionSoccer 5 United F.U.N. Project staff delivers relevant educational activities where participants are taught the basics of nutrition, the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices, and the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits and regular physical activity.

Family EngagementSoccer 5 United F.U.N. Project strives to turn parents and family members into advocates who reinforce the program's teachings by applying them in their homes. Family members are provided with information on nutrition, health, and public services that will aide them in their pursuit of a healthier lifestyle.

How to Teach

To create a learning environment that helps our players grow and develop properly, we should take a look at how to teach our players first. In todays society we have become accustomed coaches standing on the sideline and controlling his/her team by yelling out orders. This style of coaching is known as “Command Style” coaching and puts the focus on what the coach wants. This is a very effective way to let players know “what” to do, but normally leaves out “why” do it.

When you think of the game of soccer, many refer this sport as the “players game”. This is because once the game begins the coach has very little impact. Teams rely heavily on players ability to be creative, problem solve and make quick decision in order to see success. In order to develop players who can accomplish this we have adapted a

3

Page 5: Amazon Web Services€¦  · Web viewF.U.N PROJECT. Fitness | Understanding Health | Nutrition. Table of Content. Soccer 5 United

“Player Centered” coaching style. This style of coaching works by placing players in very demanding training sessions and asking the right questions at the right time, allowing players to find answers on their own and collaboratively. This approach is called “Guided Discovery” and by putting our players in this type environment, ultimately we have allowed each player to provide their input, work together to solve a problem, collaborate together to make the best decision and continue to individually develop and grow.

Soccer 5 United F.U.N. Project will measure each participant’s success through this program in these ways:

Are they having fun? Are they learning about teamwork, sportsmanship, perseverance? Are they learning about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle? Are they participating in all daily activities? (i.e., are they fully engaged and giving

input?) Are they learning something about soccer (i.e., are they improving?). Are they hustling, enthusiastic & doing their best?

Program Curriculum Soccer 5 United F.U.N. Project program curriculum will not only follow a very intense and developmentally appropriate soccer curriculum, but will also follow a great Physical Education curriculum that has been provided by the state of Virginia. By working together with experienced P.E teachers from these Elementary schools we can ensure that each student will also receive education and preparation towards the Physical Education curriculum they will be assessed by in the Public School System.

When defining what a physically educated person is, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) has identified five major focus areas:

1. Learned skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities2. Physical fitness3. Regular participation in physical activity

4

Page 6: Amazon Web Services€¦  · Web viewF.U.N PROJECT. Fitness | Understanding Health | Nutrition. Table of Content. Soccer 5 United

4. Knowledge of the implications and benefits from involvement in physical activities5. Values physical activity and its contribution to a healthful lifestyle (National Association for Sport and Physical Education, [NASPE], 1995a).

The National Standards for Physical Education indicate that a physically educated student:

1. Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms.2. Applies involvement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills.3. Exhibits a physically active lifestyle.4. Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.5. Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.6. Demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings.7. Understands that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.

A couple of the test we may potentially use to test each participants development and improvement in their physical education will be:

1. Body Mass Index2. Pacer test (Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run)3. One mile run4. Curl ups and Push ups5. Back Saver Sit and ReachDaily Schedule of Events: Time Breakdown 3:30pm – 4:45pmDuring each weeks session the children will learn a new healthy lifestyle/life skills topic, touch base on a new physical education topic and will also participate in a training session to learn a new soccer skill such as dribbling, passing, control, shooting.

3:30 - 3:45 15 minutes. Introduction to a new healthy lifestyle and physical education topic (i.e. Why is water important for your diet and how many glasses of water should you drink each day?) Discuss this topic, open discussion. Relate the practice to this making sure the kids are staying hydrated drinking tons of water. Identify the tired players…Ask how much water they drank during the school day

3:45 - 4:05 20 minutes. Big group activity as a warm up (capture the flag, doctor doctor, sharks and minnows)

5

Page 7: Amazon Web Services€¦  · Web viewF.U.N PROJECT. Fitness | Understanding Health | Nutrition. Table of Content. Soccer 5 United
