DEFINITION A cyclone is an intense low pressure system which forms over warm tropical waters in summer. CAUSES When warm tropical waters heat the air above it then rises and forms thunderclouds. As cool air is drawn in to replace the heated air it then rises rapidly upwards. The thunderclouds join to form a major swirling mass of air, often hundreds of kilometres across. The swirling motion then continues until the system reaches land and loses its source of heat and moisture, or passes over cooler waters. MAJOR AREAS AFFECTED
Cyclones affect Australia Typhoons affect South East Asia
Hurricanes affect the east coast of the United States
