YOuR Letters & eMaiLsDear EditorWe agree wholeheartedly with your article “The Dirt on my Shoe”. [Issue 49 - Page 18]

We find that the “uncaring minority” in fact proves to be a surprisingly large number of people - often not content with owning only one dog.

The owners allow their dogs off their leads to defecate, jump up at you with muddy paws and scare children - with the comment that “he/she only wants to be friendly”. When asked to control their animal, invariably they respond with aggression, burning resentment and in some cases threatening behaviour.

In 30 years of living in Alresford, this remains an

issue that seems impossible to resolve in a civilised fashion, albeit we live in the 21st century.

We suggest that you carry a pot of bright yellow powder paint to sprinkle on the offensive excrement to alert children (in particular), walkers and footballers of its presence. It is doubtful whether this would induce the shameful, selfish dog owners to clear up their mess - we can but try.

We do hope that your appeal meets with some success - well done on highlighting the issue!

Patient transportWith NHS finances coming under increasing pressure can we remind patients that unless they are seriously incapacitated patient transport for out

other and that the elderly and infirm are watched over; a helping hand collecting medicines or just a friendly word can make a real difference to the vulnerable.

Christmas and New yearThe surgery will be closed on Saturday 25 December and will re-open on Wednesday 29th December. We will also be closed on Monday 3 January. The usual Out of Hours cover will be available

Alresford Town council Reports

Grit BinsAs you will have read in the local press Alresford’s share of new

grit bins to be provided by the county council has been far below our expectations. We have been able to negotiate additional bins but in addition we are considering financing further bins from the Town council’s budget, as we have received several comments indicating that his has the support of the community.

City Council Car Parking ChargesThe Town council has written to Winchester city council objecting to the proposed increases in parking fees. Parking charges are being reviewed as a result of the forthcoming increase in VAT, but we felt that an increase of 66% on short term charges was unacceptable. We feel this proposal will exacerbate the parking problems, which

we have spent a number of years trying to address, and encourage the return of long term parking in the town centre. We have suggested only a 10p increase in the short term fees with a 50p increase to £2.00 for all day parking and some increases for periods between the two. This appears to have been accepted by the city council.

sun Lane Bridge Dependant upon weather conditions the work on providing a pedestrian footway across Sun Lane Bridge is scheduled to begin in January

‘Dragon’s teeth’ at Perins Car ParkDragon’s teeth are to be

introduced at the exit to the Staff car Parking area at Perins. This installation will improve the security of the school car park and allow for the public car park to remain

open on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

NatC Council tax for 2011/12

The council has set the 2011/12 precept at £246,000 which will mean

no increase in council Tax in respect of the town.

stratton Bates HedgerowWith the help of the Alresford Wildlife Group, the problem of the hedge at Stratton Bates has been resolved. The hedge has been reduced and thickened and the group has agreed to ensure the area remains free of all litter.

rugby Pitches at arlebury Park

We are in the process of obtaining professional advice on the acquisition, by compulsory

purchase order, of the land adjoining Arlebury Park. It is anticipated that we will be in a position to report back at a public meeting in February.

Blueprint for the FutureThe city council has been seeking the views of residents,

organisations, Parish and Town councils in response to the Government’s ‘localism’ project. The objective is to base a twenty year local plan on the needs of the community. The deadline for input to the process was

10 December but we have managed to negotiate an extension for the Town council’s input until mid-January.

We are therefore, publishing our draft input which can be viewed at www.newalresford.org.uk/blueprint.htm. We would welcome any comments on this draft, ideally by the end of the year, in order that they can be considered for the final document. comments should be addressed to the Town clerk. A new kind of hairdressing from a new kind of hairdresser

As the new year begins it always gives scope for a change and an

improvement to our lives. Many of us will make our new year resolutions (most of which will have ended by February!) and will try and make this year better than the year before. This notion often relates to health and fitness and particularly fat loss at this time of the year. However having consumed on average 7000 calories on Christmas Day alone, 5000 more than needed in the body, how do we go about effectively losing that excess Christmas weight?

I have come to the firm belief that a little bit of information will help all of you out there trying to do exactly this. Keeping in mind that 80% of all gym clients will be signed up in January, of which only 22% will actively use this in the year, and of that only 8% will ever get results, simply because they do not know what they are doing. In light of these shocking statistics as a Personal Trainer and health and fitness expert, I am often asked the question “what training

should I do to lose the most amount of weight in the shortest amount of time?” Well, although this has many answers depending on your beliefs and current level of fitness etc, there are some methods that are proven to work better than others; yet these are often the ones used the least. I ask myself why this is and why I constantly see people out on long runs when this really is not the best way to lose that ever elusive “muffin top”.

It is a common misconception that you will burn the most amount of fat by getting on a treadmill or getting out on the road and running in your “fat burning zone” for an hour a day. This is not true, and there are much more efficient ways of getting rid of that excess fat we all hate!

One of these methods, and a personal favourite of mine, is interval training. This is a great alternative to continuous exercise and consists of short periods of high intensity exercise in which the person works hard for a period of time, followed by a rest period,

then a hard period and so on. The effect this achieves is that the person becomes more out of breath and generally more intensely worked in a shorter period of time. This type of training can also be used alongside a new and very effective training method called Metabolic Conditioning, or “MetCon”. This is similar to interval training and creates similar results, and the best part about these sessions is that they often last no longer than 30 minutes each; therefore, generating much better results but in a fraction of the time that most people would normally work out for.

Both of these types of training have a great effect on the person’s metabolism by increasing it much more than just training in your fat burning zone. The effect

of doing an interval session lasts on the body for up to 24 hours afterwards, meaning you are still burning calories while you sleep!! Compare this to the 3 hours of post exercise calorie burning when exercising in your fat burning zone, and I know which method of training I would choose!

So next time you decide to go for a run or get on an exercise bike why not try a session of interval training instead and see what wonders it will do for you!

What is to become of our gorgeous Georgian Alresford?

Since taking over as the chamber secretary in September this year, I have been struck by the amount of burglaries occurring in Alresford. In particular Simply Mee and Mid Hants Railway have been victims on several occasions during this increase in crime.

As the chamber of commerce, we try to support all members who are victims of such occurrences, but it is getting to the point where something drastic needs to be done.I have forwarded all correspondence regarding the burglaries, with member’s permission, to Steve Brine MP, Simon Eden (Winchester city council) and Hampshire constabulary.

Steve Brine has informed us that he is dealing with Hampshire constabulary regarding the matter, but in the meantime burglaries are still happening and businesses are suffering. Several members have suggested that all members contribute financially to employ an external security company to watch over the businesses within the town. The plan at present is to try to get more

police presence in town, as currently the police cover does not seem to be present when the majority of these crime are taking place. caroline Ward from Simply Mee did however say after her recent burglary on Wednesday 8th December:‘The police were actually very efficient and extremely helpful today. So I know that although the whole event was yet again distressing and depressing at least having caught some one this might be encouraging to fellow victims’caroline also added;‘ I feel we definitely could do with improved police presence in Alresford - I think the thieves in my case know that they have a good window of time once the alarm has gone off before the police will arrive as they probably will be coming out of Winchester or Alton! I am sure the police were as pleased as I was to catch one of the thieves, as so far they have had no luck in finding them on previous occasions. AND it was the vigilance of the residents on West Street that we have to thank for this, NOT the speed of the police arrival!’

The current spate of burglaries (and attempted burglaries) is a serious worry for Alresford businesses, particularly as many operate on slim margins. A break-in not only

hits financially (the high excess on insurance policies and subsequent claw-back through increased premiums makes claims not worth pursuing), but also on the morale of the owner and employees. These are people who care not only for their own businesses, but for the town.

One recently-established business has suffered damage five times, and other small businesses have been hit once or more. Along with the burglaries there are the window-breaking attacks, affecting both shops and bus shelters, costing amounts outside the puny comprehension of the offenders. So easy and so stupid, this ‘bravado’ is unlikely to give initiation to the most pathetic gang. We need the Police here, particularly on Friday nights. We also need to reconsider ccTV in the town and if necessary an outside security company.

There will be a chamber committee meeting on Tuesday 4th January and this issue will be discussed in depth at this time. Any suggestions or feedback with regards to the above issues would be greatly received.On a more positive note caroline Ward of Simply Mee has also commented;‘I would also like to say I have been incredibly touched by the kindness and genuine concern that customers and

fellow traders have shown. I can't tell you how important that has been and proves what a special and lovely place Alresford is! And lets never forget that!

Plan of action so far….1. We are contacting security companies (one of which is a member) for a quote for ccTV.2. We have made the chamber's views known to: Steve Brine (MP) Winchester and chandlers Ford Jackie Porter - county councillor Itchen Valley and Alresford Ernie Jeffs - District councillor, Alresford Simon cook - District councillor, Alresford Margot Power - Winchester city councillor for Alresford Simon Eden - chief Executive of Winchester city council And we have asked for a six week response to our concerns, which revolve around enough policing to keep our neighbourhood safe.3. We are in open contact and support business that has been a victim of crime.4. We will not let Alresford become a crime riddled town.5. An article will be submitted to the Alresford Forum to reiterate the chambers views on this situation

This is a most earthy dish to be eaten by a bunch of friends.The only problem is

the size of the cooking pot. Our grandmother used large pots which have unfortunately disappeared! But you can use two pots if necessary. It’s a very traditional French dish enjoyed by everybody, especially with friends.

Method:In a large pot fry all the meat until it is a nice golden brown. Once the meat is browned cover with cold water, ensure that the water is level with the meat, bring to the boil then simmer.

Whilst the water is coming to boil peel and cut the vegetables. Take some slices of carrot and put them at each end of the marrow bones and attach with a piece of string, this stops the marrow coming out of the bones!

After 20 minutes of cooking, remove the foam from the surface of the simmering water with a soup ladle. Return

to the cooker and slowly cook for another 20 minutes. Remove any remaining foam and add salt and pepper to taste, add the onions and all the other vegetables except the tomatoes.

Let the ingredients cook for another 40 minutes removing any foam from the surface of the liquid.

Remove the vegetables and poultry as they are cooked. But leave the other meats to carry on cooking for another 60 minutes. check and remove the other pieces of meat when ready. The meat should be so well cooked that it begins to fall off the bone. Now add the marrow bones and tomatoes and cook for an additional 20 minutes. Once the marrow bones are cooked remove the slices of carrots from the end. Warm up vegetables and meat briefly in the bouillon and serve carefully arranged on a large serving dish.

For a luxurious version of this recipe add a scallop of duck foie gras per guest, briefly

poached in the bouillon, absolutely superb! Serve into soup plates with slices of toasted country bread beside.

Each guest may add a drop of red wine in the bouillon toward the end of the meal, it’s called “faire chabrot or chabrol” in the South West of France.The next day it will be even better or you can keep it in the freezer. The bouillon will make the most delicious consommé. using a hand mincer, mince all the left over vegetables and meat together, fill an oven dish with it, cover with a good mashed potato to make a Hachi Parmentier!, freeze and use later on.

If you use a lamb knuckle for your pot au feu then make sure it is placed in the middle of the dish, the bone sticking out prominently. It is then called “La soupe a la jambe de bois” or the “Wooden leg soup”! a speciality from Lyon and Mr Paul Bocuse. An ancient version of this recipe uses a whole turkey and a leg of lamb, plus a piece of silverside without forgetting someprime rib of beef!

ingredientsYou don't have to use all the different meat described, butit is essential that you use chuck steak and marrow bone.

• 500g Chuck steak• 500g Lamb neck cut into slices or lamb knuckle or both if you prefer• Half a small chicken, partridge or pheasant• 500g of oxtail• Marrow bones, each cut to 5 x 5cm. Put in very cold water for few hours to remove any blood.• 3 leeks coarsely chopped• 5 carrots coarsely chopped• 5 turnips cut into quarters• Half celeriac coarsely chopped• Half fennel coarsely chopped• 3 onions each with a glove of garlic set into them.• A few extra cloves of garlic• 3 ripe tomatoes• A few parsnips coarsely chopped• Bouquet garni

King alfred Buses running Day

The transport scene of yesteryear in Winchester is brought to life again! Enjoy

bygone travel when over 40 heritage buses provide free journeys in and around Winchester on Sunday 2nd January 2011.

Free rides on buses and coaches operating over the routes of former local bus companies. Services run all day from the Broadway and

Bus Station in Winchester from 9am until 5pm.

Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB's) membership now stands at about 250 people. One may ask why there still so much interest in a bus company of such relatively small size that has been gone for more than thirty years? The answer lies in the nature of King Alfred Motor Services (KAMS) itself. King Alfred was one of the few privately

owned bus companies to run a municipal service. KAMS was proudly independent, with the statue of King Alfred on the green side panels of its buses to add that ultimate distinction. It is also down to the enthusiasm of members to keep the memory of KAMS alive and protect part of Winchester's great heritage. In 2000 we became a charitable trust, rather than just a group of enthusiasts preserving buses and coaches. Anyone who has travelled on our vehicles at our running days or at other events will have noticed that even the crews try to wear the correct uniform of the 1960's. Our aims are to eventually house all our vehicles together in a living museum in Hampshire, to assist in educating the public in the

role of transport in Winchester and in the surrounding district. We of course already re-create the past when we hold our annual running days and show our vehicles at many local events. As we have a unique collection of ex KAMS buses and coaches, our next aim is attain museum status. At the 2004 running day we launched our new mobile information unit to explain the work of FoKAB and the history of KAMS. Preserving the past takes both time and money. This is where you can help by becoming a member! We hold regular working sessions on the vehicles in Winchester on Tuesday afternoon and evenings and all day Saturday.

A lovely circular walk of roughly four and a half miles; well you’re still on holiday

so who cares how long it is. Some of it is ‘off road’ and yes, there is a pub at the end, fear not!

Drive, or walk, to Itchen Abbas village hall and park. From the car park walk to the main road, B3047, but don’t cross.Turn right and walk up the lane, around the corner and under the rather beautiful railway bridge.

continue up the hill to where the road bends round to the right, just before the bend

there is a gravel track to your left, take this track and follow it to the end, about a half a mile.

At the end of the track you will meet a tarmac road, turn left and go under another railway bridge and continue down until the T-junction with the main B3047.

Here cross over and take the ‘dead end ‘signed lane to ‘chilland’ which is slightly to your right as you cross.

Walk down to the very bottom of the lane where you will find a footpath that takes you over the river, be sure to pause and

have a look, it’s really lovely here. continue to follow the path which will soon meet at a T-junction with the road from Easton. Turn left here and walk up the long, but not very steep , hill.

Once at the top you will enter Avington Park via the gate or over the cattle grid. From here you will get a lovely view over the lake to Avington Park House beyond and some lovely farm land to your right.

continue through and out of the park, via another gate or cattle grid. Walk up the hill until you meet another T-junction, here turn left.

You will now walk down through the village of Avington, simply follow the road all the way round and you will eventually past the front of Avington Park with its horses and ha-ha to your right.

continue over the hump back bridge, lovely water fall here, over two more bridges and before long you will see welcome sight of ‘The Trout’ in front of you, with Itchen Abbas village hall tucked next to it on the left. Enjoy!

The census - some facts and figures. 2011 is going to be another ‘census year’. censuses,

[or should it be ‘censi’] have been held every ten years since 1801, except in 1941 for obvious reasons, but a ‘population

count’ was carried out on 29th September 1939... perhaps for one of the same reasons as the very first census [see below].

They were first suggested by John Rickman in an editorial he wrote for the commercial, Agricultural and Manufacturers Magazine in 1800, called ‘On Ascertaining the Population’. His initiative brought him to the attention of Mr. charles Abbot M.P., who in 1802 became the Speaker of the House of commons. He decided to employ John Rickman as his private secretary. Rickman drafted the census Act that was passed in 1800 and supervised the census of 1801 and the next three.Rickman’s motivation had several strands; firstly he could see the need for ‘an intimate knowledge of population as the only rational basis for legislation’. Secondly he realised the need for an assessment of the conscription numbers for the militia and

the number of seamen for the Royal Navy...[don’t forget the Napoleonic Wars started in 1803]. Thirdly, he thought the census would provide a basis for planning to feed the nation.

The 1801 census was held in March, but the next three were held in late May or June. 1851 saw a return to March and dates since then have always been either late March or April. The 2011 census will be held on 27th March. censuses have sometimes proved controversial as more information is sort

about us all. The 1911 census for example was boycotted by the Women’s Freedom League [the suffragettes], and it is estimated that in 1991 over one million people avoided the census for fear of it being used to identify them for Poll Tax purposes. By the way, the 1931 census results were destroyed in an accidental fire, so future genealogists will find there is quite a gap in the records between 1921 and 1951! An extra census was held for a random 10% of the population in 1966 and new questions asked about car ownership and the means people used to travel to work. This year there will be the option to complete the census ‘online’. Happy form filling and a Happy New Year.

An Embarrassmentof ImprovementsWell, you know what

it’s like. The New Year always re-ignites feelings of

regeneration: out with the old and in with the new.

That sentiment started late last year in the Pagan household, and so it was that one sunny, chilly morning Stars I, II and I found ourselves gazing up through a large aperture where the conservatory roof had once been, at a clear blue November sky.

For months prior to that, any precipitation necessitated the strategic deployment of towels on the floor as part of a well-rehearsed mopping-up campaign.

Slowly reality had dawned on the Husband: “Think we’ll have to replace the conservatory roof Sandra, love. And I reckon the kitchen’s on its last legs too.”

The kitchen? I didn’t think he’d noticed the fact that the oven timer had taken to cutting in and out at will, leaving the cooking of the Sunday roast in the lap of the gods, and that the extractor fan … well, didn’t extract. Or that the dishwasher emitted an agonized moaning sound throughout its cycle, whilst the fridge–freezer, having had its very own identity crisis, had decided to swap roles so that the fridge panicked and froze most of its contents, leaving the freezer struggling to keep up.

The wooden cabinets had gone through a couple of metamorphoses, having once been painted blue (I know). They are currently cream, but had elected to come over all peeling and difficult to clean, and jettisoned their draw handles in protest. And for all I knew, there could well be an out break of Legionella under the sink due to a persistent and unresolved leak. The Husband, apparently, was right, so on that November morning with the small Pagans

still asleep, he cheerily announced, “I think I’ll take the roof off now Sandra, OK? Then I’m just popping into Winch.”

“Err… right …..”

With the phrase ‘keep calm and carry on’ reverberating around my skull, we stoically sat down to breakfast amongst the rubble, with the wind whistling through our rashers.

High noon heralded the arrival of ‘Iron Man' chum who had generously offered to help. Fuelled by numerous cups of tea and toasted cheese (well, the fridge had frozen everything else), the ‘boys’ happily played with the equivalent of a giant Meccano set all afternoon. With apparent consummate ease, by five o’clock the roof was on and looking amazing; and a couple of weeks later with the plastering and painting complete, we had a space Kevin Mccloud would be proud of.

But the Husband was not content with that, oh no. This was a man on a mission. He had a date with demolition, a rendezvous with refurb.

“So, Sandra, have you chosen the kitchen yet?”“Sorry?”

Having worked out our budget …..oh dear. The family Pagan pilgrimaged to our local Solent port's palace of Scandinavian delights. It was to be a lengthy visit. Star I needed to seek out a new design for his bedroom, while Star II tried out the chairs, and the sofas … and the beds……. all of them. By the time we reached the kitchen department we had trouble remembering our own names, let alone those of the Nordic gods after whom the kitchens appeared to be named.coffees and strange-looking but surprisingly tasty cakes were required.

We’d seen enough. Having harvested brochures and made the obligatory candle and pizza-cutter purchase, we vacated the premises with glazed expressions and an unstamped parking ticket. Then one Saturday morning, the Husband was at it again ……

“I think I’ll take the kitchen ceiling down today, get it ready for the lads to come in to do the plumbing and electrics, OK?” I elected to take Stars I & II to a local emporium of tea and chocolate brownies, and to satisfy my addiction to the ‘carocoli muffin’ once more. upon our return there was surprisingly little mess - just needed to hoover out the fruit bowl, and all was returned to relative normality.

After a couple of weeks spent cogitating and measuring, the Husband and I went out on our own for the evening... back to the Scandinavian citadel of domestic consumption where, after more coffee and cake, we set about ordering our new kitchen.

The Husband's exacting bill of quantities came as a relief to the lovely kitchen planner who was quite keen to get away by nine, and it was already eight o’clock. With the deal sealed, the Husband went to sort out the delivery date, and I took the opportunity to pop to the candle department. Well, one can never have too many, you know.

“Right then Sandra, love, delivery on Thursday.”

“Which Thursday?”

“Thursday, as in day after tomorrow.”

“Right ……. lovely!”

The peace and luminous tranquillity of my new-look conservatory was to be short-lived, for on Thursday evening, two large vans pulled up on the drive and their contents - some fifty or sixty boxes and white goods various

- were manhandled into the conservatory by two burly men.

“New kitchen in time for christmas then, Mrs Pagan?”

A look of panic shot across the Husband's face. I spent the evening pondering whether anyone would notice if I just drew a christmas tree on one of the boxes, as there was certainly no room for a real one. Then, I confess, I threw a hissy fit. The stark realisation that the four people coming for supper on Friday and the six people coming for lunch on Saturday would have to do so seated in flat–pack hell, initiated a major sense of humour failure. Oh yes! And actually, what about christmas?

Star II offered comfort: “Don’t worry Mum, I’ll use all the boxes to make a giant robot.” Star I was more emphatic: “Well none of it’s going in my room.” Marvellous.

The Husband performed a damage limitation exercise, and we now have bits of kitchen in the attic, lounge, and in various locations around Hampshire. christmas came and went without me having to resort to Nigella's ‘How to cook a Yuletide Feast for Eleven on a camping Stove and still Look Sexy’; mercifully the hob and cooker are still in place - did I mention that the only item out of stock was the double oven? And now? Well it’s what you would describe as a ‘work in progress’. As I type, the conservatory looks like a carpenter's workshop with accompanying cardboard mountain. To say I’ve let the housework go a little would be an understatement, but not to worry.The Husband, bless him, working flat out to get it completed, seems as happy as Larry. The sawing, hammering and swearing are all accompanied by loud rock music. It’s a little like being an extra in ‘Apocalypse Now’ but without the napalm. Mind you, they haven’t fitted the gas hob yet … what could possibly go wrong?

Happy New Year to you all. As I’m writing this, I cannot believe that

we are now in 2011, where did 2010 go? The years seem to zoom by when you have children, and their social lives overtake your own, it’s non stop, and just when you have a chance to catch your breath, it starts all over again! I do hope 2011 slows down slightly!

The snow in December, gave us all a chance to be a child again, but it is often in the months of January and February that we expect it, so the snow last month took us all by surprise. The team at Sunbeams are all based locally, so should it snow again, we will endeavour to open the centre, if it is safe to do so.

Like most people I have an annual New Year’s resolution, it’s just that mine

does not involve dieting or exercise; although it probably should. No, my resolution is simply ‘snowdrops’. I love they way they welcome in the change of season in their small and hopeful manner, looking so delicate and yet tough as old boots. Every year I remind myself that I really must get some, every year Mother reminds me to buy them ‘in the green’, and every year I never quite seem to get around to it. It is such an annual event that Mother actually took pity on me a couple of years ago and dug up some of hers for me; needless to say they are still in their black plastic pot and

not in the flower bed – yet. January is of course the month for planning the garden year; the fact that our lawn needs an overhaul, that I still haven’t pruned things I should have (but at least they look pretty in the frost), that bits of fencing need mending, that the vegetable patch needs doing properly this year, that Tom, Dick and Harry need better support, that the decking needs a good clean and seal, that I really must keep up with all of the weeds, that the garden toys will need a good hosing down, oh and that the crocosmia need moving away from the path. The list keeps growing and growing… I’ll start small and see if I can finally get those snowdrops in!

Gardens can prove a real life-saver for wildlife at this time of year, especially when

it is frosty or snowy. Birds become bolder, venturing into gardens in search of scattered scraps and well-stocked feeders and bird tables.

Fallen apples can still be a good food source, which you can supplement with sliced fruit from the kitchen. You may be lucky enough to see more unusual visitors, such as fieldfares and redwings looking for berries and fruit in cold winter weather.

The simplest way to encourage birds into your garden is with a bird feeder. Generally, there are three types of bird feeder, to match the three common types of bird food: seeds, peanuts, and suet or fat balls. Also at this time of the year another essential thing to do is make sure that there is a unfrozen water source in your garden.

Seed feeders are generally tube-shaped with small openings at their base where birds can perch and pick out the seeds. It is important to note that if you plan to offer niger seed, you need a feeder that is specifically designed for it as niger is too fine to work in a regular seed feeder.

Peanut feeders have coarse mesh or perforated sides just large enough to allow peanut fragments to pass through, and most suet feeders have larger openings still, resembling small hanging cages. choose your feeder carefully, the larger the holes and the reward, the larger the bird causing smaller birds to be left out. Try the good old fashioned upside down coconut shell filled with fat and seeds.

Winter Wildlife

Find a safe spotchoosing where to put your bird feeders can be a challenge. The ideal spot for a bird feeder is quiet, but not too out of the way. Remember that you’re going to have to trek out there to refill the feeder. Having natural cover, such as trees or bushes, nearby is a plus, since it gives birds somewhere to hide. However, try to avoid putting the feeder directly under a tree, since trees also make good launching points for pouncing squirrels or cats.

Squirrel raids are of course an ongoing problem for many bird feeders. While some people do not mind squirrels, they do scare off birds and have voracious appetites

that can make your bird food disappear in a flash. There are a variety of squirrel-proofing devices available for safeguarding your feeder, such as cages with openings too small for squirrels to fit through or deflectors that prevent the squirrels from jumping on top of the feeder. If you anticipate a squirrel problem, do not get a cheap plastic feeder as they will simply rip it apart. Sturdier polycarbonate or metal feeders are a much safer investment.

You should also watch out for windows. The feeder should not be less than three feet from a window, or birds may end up colliding with the glass. A well-made crook should allow you to place the feeder wherever you like in your garden.

Keep it cleanBe sure to clean your feeder and the surrounding area on a regular basis, preferably every two weeks. Remove uneaten

food and seed husks and wash off any stains, droppings, stray feathers and dirt. Doing so will help prevent the growth of mould and diseases such as salmonella. To avoid the possibility of cross-contamination, do not wash a feeder in the same area you prepare food.

A feeder is an excellent help to birds, especially during the colder months, and is a great addition to the garden for your own enjoyment of watching them feed.

However, a bird feeder cannot take the place of a bird’s natural diet. You can best help birds find their own food by maintaining your garden well.

You may also want to consider adding plants that birds naturally feed from, such as thistles, rowan, or alder.
