With so much transpiring within our communities and all the work done on behalf of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity within our respective chapters, there’s barely enough time or space to share the our noble deeds. However, we’ve attempted to take an opportunity to pull together noteworthy deeds we thought you might appreciate.

As the year ends its natural we consider all for which we are grateful. Almost as important as our work within the community, our relationships with one another are among those intangible items we treasure. During the holiday season our thoughts turn appreciatively to those who have made our less arduous. For this we give thanks, not just to the visionary seven, but for the countless “unacquainted” men who “enter, shake hands, exchange greetings” and continue to show the “…true Spirit of Fraternity.”

The GOODWILL of the members within the “House of Alpha,” will continue to have a positive impact upon those whom we serve; as this is the foundation of our organizational success.

In closing, thank you for the opportunity to serve you, as it is shaping up to be a most enjoyable experience. Though selfless acts of benevolence are what prevail during this time of year, within our House it is in this spirit we can simply, but sincerely say…THANK YOU! for all you do as servant-leaders within our communities and BEST WISHES for a happy Holiday Season and prosperous New Year!

Happy Holidays! On December 4, 2013, we celebrated 107 years since the founding of our beloved Alpha Phi Alpha. On that “ice cold” Tuesday night, the men that we reverend as the Jewels, breathed life into an experiment in brotherhood. Out of the 53 other organizations founded in the year 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha is the most respected and widely known organization in the world. As we embark through our post-centennial “golden year”, my hopes are we remember the foundation of our beloved fraternity: manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind.In this holiday season, also remember the true spirit of this time of year. I believe it not to be an accident, that our fraternity was founded in the midst of the season which is indicative of love, family, giving, and service. As we journey through these holidays, I urge us all to call a brother. Yes, sometimes a text is quick and efficient, but to hear the voice of another brother is priceless. I urge you to lend a helping hand to the family of a brother that has transitioned into Omega. This is the hardest time of year for families who have lost a loved one. Simply letting a family know that we love our dear brother beyond his mortal life is priceless. Finally, remember that the best gift to give a brother, especially those who are inactive, is to offer to pay his fraternal dues. That is brotherhood. That is priceless. That is love! Brothers! I bid you a happy holidays and a blessed new year!

What a great honor it is, to serve as your Executive Director of our great Region within our illustrious Fraternity!

As we embark on this journey for the next two years, I look forward to working with you all as we look to embody the visions of our ERVP, in “Moving Alpha Forward,” while “Reconciling Leadership & Brotherhood.”

As we approach the holiday season, many of us will be inundated with a conundrum of social gatherings with family, friends, coworkers and even brothers. Many people including myself, love these opportunities of fun and fellowship. The evident expressions of joy, happiness and communal tranquility provide us a sense of calm and celebration. We look for to these festive holidays because Thanksgiving and Christmas, often illuminate the best of people.

However, there are many people who struggle during this season, in particular, because of failure in their personal and professional pursuits, memories of deceased or absent loved ones, and because of unresolved conflict or bitterness towards others. While the holidays provide a respite for some, this season for others, is the time when they become the Scrooge.

May I suggest four helpful tools to safeguard you from being that melancholic monster who can make this merry season miserable for everyone?

1. Make your own (new) memories

Most people have unforgettable holiday memories. I remember my brother and I sleeping in our mother’s bed every Christmas Eve finding it difficult to fall asleep because of the great anticipation of what we’d discover under the tree on Christmas morning. However, now a husband and father of three school age children, I must create new memories with my

family. What will those persons in your life remember about this holiday season in the years to come?

2. Become the Master of your Mood

All brothers have learned that “I am the master of my fate and the captain of my soul...” Brothers, we must also become the master of our mind. Depression and frustration plague many people during this time of year. Purpose in your heart to manage and control your emotional and mental capacities. Determine to be happy. Remember, happiness is not predicated by what is happening. Happiness happens on purpose. Guard your mood and let nothing steal your joy.

3. Manage your Money

Why do we spend so much money during this season? So many people are in debt after the holidays because they spent too much money gifting people, many of whom they don’t even like. Everyone loves gifts and most givers enjoy the opportunity to give, but choose to gift wisely. You can’t make everyone happy at your expense. There are other affordable ways to share without adversely affecting your budget.

4. Spend a few Moments with your Maker

During the holiday, spend quality time reflecting and meditating. You’ve made it to the end of another year. This is a great time to be thankful and grateful for life, health, friends, brothers and family. Prayer always makes the difference. I can’t imagine walking through the hours of the day without communing with God. There is a greater power who should be credited for your being. You’ve survived and conquered both the blessings and burdens of 2013. To God be the glory, great things He has done!

Theta Iota Lambda (Springfield, Massachusetts) and its non-profit Lee B. Revels Scholarship & Mentorship Foundation awarded $13,500 in scholarships to nine male students from western Massachusetts. This summer, two scholarship events were held to confer these awards. The first event was the sixth-annual Senator Edward W. Brooke III Oratorical Scholarship Contest. The second was an essay contest, in which the chapter awarded winners based on their community involvement, professional endeavors, and academic achievement. These contests were opened to black and Latino high school, college-bound upperclassmen. The winners of the oratorical competition were: Jasper Mitchell, James Villalobos, and Malik Davis. The essay contest winners were: Edward Brown, Kelvin Baldwin, Brenton Jenkins, Jasper Mitchell, and Carlos Palacio. “It is through educational excellence that not only our fraternity thrives, but also our community. We are committed to ensure that promising student enter college,” said Brother William Strother, President of the foundation.

Theta Iota Lambda Awards Over $13,000 in Scholarships

In an event full of pageantry, pomp and circumstance at the 50th Annual Golden Anniversary Black and Gold Scholarship Banquet and Scholarship Benefit Concert, Saturday, May 18, 2013 marked a culminating event recognizing 50 years of scholarship, service, and support to military and local host nation communities across Germany. The event was hosted at the historic Kurhaus in Wiesbaden, Germany. Over $10,000 was awarded to ten scholarship recipients The chapter played host to the 34th General President Mark S. Tillman and his wife Velicia Tillman, chapter founder Bro. James. E. Williams and his wife Susan, and Dr. Mathias Wagner, son of Chapter Founder Bro. Cloyd Trouth.The room exceeded maximum capacity to hear the 34th General President address an audience comprised of parents, educators, National PanHellenic Council Europe officers, military personnel, and all nine Black Greek Letter Organizations.

Brothers from Zeta Chapter (Yale and Southern CT State University), Zeta Phi Lambda (Fairfield County, CT) , Eta Alpha Lambda (New Haven County, CT) and Theta Iota Lambda (Springfield, MA) broke bread together in celebration of Founders Day for the 2nd year in a row at Yale University’s Afro-American Cultural Center. ZPL Chapter President Bro. Terence Vermont and EAL Chapter President Dominique Alston both shared stories about their personal experiences within Alpha. Other esteemed brothers in attendance included past Eastern Region Vice President Brother Albert Lucas as well as last year’s keynote speaker, Brother Thomas Nins, Diversity Outreach Coordinator at Brunswick School and Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church - Greenwich, CT. The event was made possible by Brother Rodney T. Cohen, who is the Assistant Dean of Yale College and the Director of the Afro-American Cultural Center.

Upsilon Kappa commemorated the first anniversary of its chartering ceremony on September 7th, 2013 with special guests such as Bro. District Director, Lucien Metellus, Bro. Assistant Eastern Region Vice President, Brandon Johnson, and Bro. James Irving. On January 30th, 2012, the Upsilon Kappa chapter was chartered by six zealous men who saw the fraternity as a tool to foster community among men of color, as well as encourage the better making of men on the campus of SUNY Plattsburgh. Since its establishment on the campus, the Upsilon Kappa chapter has initiated a total of eight men into the chapter and has had a positive impact in the Plattsburgh community, through its programming efforts.

Wall Street Alphas and Beta Chapter Alumni Host a Tribute to Mayor David DinkinsMembers of the Wall Street Alphas and the Beta Chapter Alumni Association (BCAA) hosted a special tribute to former New York City Mayor David Dinkins Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the Red Rooster of Harlem.The event – entitled “An Alpha Man from Gotham” - brought together members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. from across several generations of the fraternity’s initiates to honor the legacy of Dinkins, an Alpha who pledged the organization’s Beta Chapter during his college years at Howard University in Washington, D.C.Several high-profile members of the organization attended including: Congressmen, Charles B. Rangel, Greg Meeks, Chaka Fattah, National Urban League President, Marc Morial, and Bro. R. Anthony Mills, Eastern Regional Vice-President.In May, several members of the fraternity met with Dinkins following graduation ceremonies at Columbia University, where he is a professor in the School of International and Public Affairs. After spending some time with the venerable former New York City mayor, the idea of having a tribute - to allow many other fraternity members to meet and relish in the myriad of stories Dinkins shared that day – was born.“We’re really excited as this event has been promoted across fraternity social networks on Facebook, Twitter and email around the country,” said BCAA President Theodore P. Cummings, a patent attorney from Cincinnati, who will also be attending. “We’re most excited about how a diverse group of men have coalesced and are working together to produce a historic event to honor a great man.”The event will be held at the famous Red Rooster restaurant in Harlem which is owned by world famous chef, Marcus Samuelsson and Derek Fleming, who is also a member of the fraternity.

Zeta Theta Lambda Chapter- From the beginning of his administration, President Obama has requested input from all sources to improve the Affordable Health Care Legislation. While others chose a path of negative input and activities, Brother James Williams, Jr., chose to provide positive input to ensure comprehensive legislations were put in place. There is a void in both Pennsylvania state and federal health care legislations for prostate cancer funding. On September 27, 2013, Brother Williams joined Brothers Joseph Robinson, Jr. and Arthur Williams, MD Hamilton Health Center, to provide information and free health examinations to uninsured men between the ages of 18 to 65 at the African American Male Health Summit.

Sigma Zeta Lambda was granted a two year provisional chapter at this year’s General Convention in Austin, TX. The brothers residing in Morris County, NJ are a distinguished group of accomplished gentlemen. The new chapter was welcomed into the Eastern Region by Bro. Sean McCaskill, Regional Vice President, Brother Ainsley Reynolds, District IV Director and Brother Samad Patton, Area Director. Charter members include: Brothers, Daniel N. Akwei, Samuel Baker, Douglas Bush III, Todd Easley, Cheyenne Fulmore, Zachary Hawkins, Alfred J. Lee, Quinzell McKenzie, Leonard Posey, Dan Solomon Smith, Esq., Travell Summerville, and Kelly Wilson III.

The chapter has been active since its inception; supported A Call to Action: Rally for Justice, on July 20th in Newark, NJ as a peaceful expression of our grief and dissatisfaction with the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial and co-sponsored a Community Health Day & Walkathon, on September 7th with Morris County based organizations including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., The Links, Incorporated and 100 Black Men of America, Inc. Additionally, the chapter will be the co-sponsor of an Inter-Faith pantry Food Drive with corporate sponsors such as AVIS.Since its inception Sigma Zeta Lambda has increased its membership by 5 brothers, with total chapter membership now at 19 brothers. Sigma Zeta Lambda will continue its quest to ‘make it happen’ by implementing plans to support our key national initiatives as well as an aggressive agenda within the Morris County community.

Gamma Iota, chartered on February 9, 1947, made its triumphant return to the campus of Hampton University in Hampton Virginia on Sunday November 10, 2013 at 5:06pm. Under the direction and mentorship of Delta Beta Lambda chapter, twenty-tw o neophytes have been initiated and have united the banner of the “Phrozen Souls of Khepri.” With the assistance of Brothers Leo Bailey, Matthew Melvin, and Shaundau Woodly; the neophytes executed their probate show in front of faculty, their friends and families in Holland Hall to a packed out crowd with extreme success. Alumni brothers came from far and wide to support the new line after a long five year hiatus. The neophytes were well received by their constituents and are excited to represent the chapter, and the fraternity, at Hampton while achieving the lofty aims of manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind!

Zeta Upsilon Lambda Flashback with Local AKAsZeta Upsilon Lambda in conjunction with the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter, held their second Old School Jam in September in Sterling, Va.

Both organizations’ chapters are active in Fairfax and Loudoun counties in Virginia, which is part of suburban Washington, D.C. A substantial portion of the proceeds will be used to support The A. Charles Haston Brothers’ Keepers National Program and the Educational Charitable Foundation of Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter.The ZUL Brothers have been committed to holding Alpha high since their inception in December 1975.

Iota Lambda Omega Chapter (Columbia. MD) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. presented Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter with the “Emerging Young Leaders” award for the chapter’s contributions to the Howard County area. The “Celebrate Timeless Service in Howard County Awards Brunch” was held on October 12.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa on July 14, 1958 and entered Omega Chapter on September 22, 2013. He joined Alpha in 1979 at Omicron Chapter, University of Pittsburgh. In addition to his service to the community as an Alpha, Brother Stanton was active in Free Masonry.Brother Stanton was an outstanding athlete throughout his life. At Taylor Allderdice High School, he earned varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball and attended college on a full athletic scholarship at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.Professionally, Brother Stanton retired from the Pennsylvania State Police Force. During his 25 years on the force, he was a highly successful undercover officer completing the only undercover operation in the Pennsylvania prison system.

Samuel C. Gregory, 57, of Washington, DC, joined Alpha in April 26, 1974 Epsilon Pi, Norfolk State, of Norfolk, VA. A life-member, he was most recently active with Theta Theta Lambda chapter in Frankfurt, Germany as the chapter president and a charter member of Rho Chi Lambda chapter in London, England. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Masters in Public Administration from Webster University. He served his country as an Infantry Officer in January 1977 through August of 1988. He served an additional 11 years in Federal Civil Service. Most recently he served as a Budget Analyst for the United States Army Europe (USAREUR) G8 servicing the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB).

He notably earned the coveted title of Honorary Past Grandmaster while serving as the Most Worshipful District Deputy Grandmaster of District Eight Western Europe (Oklahoma Jurisdiction) Prince Hall Affiliated. He simultaneously served as the Deputy of the Orient of Western Europe for the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry (Southern Jurisdiction). He was a stalwart member of the European community-at-large and a key figure in re-establishing and maintaining the European Network Council, an organization dedicated to unifying NPHG organizations and the NAACP under a common goal-oriented umbrella that survives to this day. He was the brain-child behind the first-ever joint Founders Day celebration with Theta Theta Lambda and Rho Chi Lambda and Beta Nu hosted on-site at Richmond, The American International University in London.His awards and decorations include two Superior Civilian Service Awards, Civilian Deployment Award, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Army Commendation Medal, and two special act awards.He entered Omega Chapter April 2, 2012 in Wurzburg, Germany. His life partner of 27 years Charlotte Johnson and his beloved daughter Samantha Johnson survive him.

34th General President Mark S. Tillman and his wife Velicia Tillman visit Germany. The General president was treated to a whirlwind tour of Europe during his visit with the brothers of Theta Theta Lambda.He visited Paris, France, the Czech Republic, and various communities in and around Germany such as Kaiserslautern, Ansbach, Wiesbaden, and Stuttgart. The brothers played host in their homes and at local German eateries.The week culminated with a social mixer in Wiesbaden, Germany at the Citrus packed wall-to-wall with families, friends, Divine Nine members, and guests. All guests took the opportunity to take pictures with the General President and his wife.Brother Tillman provided a condensed State of Fraternity address for chapter members and entertained questions from the brotherhood. When asked about is reclamation efforts, “I choose the term reconnect”, stated the General President. Once again the Tillman family flew the friendly skies returning stateside from their European visit.
