OBJECTIVE: ToevaluatetheabilityofanewSPF50sunscreenformulationusingonlyZincOxidetoprovideahighlevelofUVAandUVBprotection(measuredbyPFAandSPF,respectively),whichisalsoappropriateforbaby’ssensitiveskin.Thissunscreeniscomprisedofawater-in-siliconeemulsioncontaining21.6%ZnO.

STUDY DESIGN:UVA Protection Efficacy:

• InVitroPFATesting(ISO24443:2012(E))Sunscreenisappliedat1.3mg/cm2onPMMAplatesforthemeasurementofUVabsorbancespectrum.ThespectrumisthenusedtocalculateUVAPF(PFA),ameasureofUVAprotection.

• InVivoPFATesting(ISO24442:2011)Tensubjectswereevaluatedforminimalpersistentpigment-darkeningdose(MPPD)ofanunprotectedversussunscreen-protected(2.0mg/cm2)siteafterUVAexposure.PFAisthemeanMPPDProtectedSkin/MPPDUnprotectedSkin.

Clinical Tolerability:

• Two-WeekTolerabilityStudyonBabySkinInarandomized,doubleblindedstudy,thirty-fourbabies(aged6–36months)usedthetestproductonceperdayandwereevaluatedbyclinicianforerythema,dryness/flakiness,burning/stinging,itching,andtightness/drynessonafour-pointscaleassessedatbaseline,post-application,andat1and2weekspost-treatment.
