IPS e.max® CAD crowns and bridges, 7 years in situ

Having used IPS e.max CAD for ten years in clinical applications, I'm fascinated by the material's reliability, high esthetics and biocompatibility.

The high number of bridges that we have successfully created chairside is an indication of the new dimensions that this material opens up for patients and operators.

Exceptionally strong and clinically proven – for more than 10 years

More than 10 years of continuous quality testing have shown that IPS e.max CAD features an unparalleled high biaxial flexural strength of 530 MPa1 among the CAD/CAM glass- ceramic materials.

This factor, taken together with the material's high fracture toughness, enables the IPS e.max lithium disilicate ceramic to offer even more minimally invasive treatment options than before.

Given these values, full-contour crowns of only 1 millimetre can be fabricated and placed using the adhesive cementation technique.

Hill T, Tysowsky G. Fracture toughness, KIC, of five CAD/CAM glass-ceramics. AADR/CADR Annual Meeting: 1672, 2016

A high fracture toughness increases the ability to resist crack propagation. The higher the measured value, the better the long-term clinical performance.

A high flexural strength is of significant importance for restorations in stress-bearing areas. Flexural strength is calculated on the basis of the fracture load, or the force applied to a material just before it yields.

The IPS e.max CAD range comprises blocks that come with a pre-fabricated interface for direct cementation to a titani-um base, e.g. Viteo® Base Ti or Dentsply Sirona Ti Base. This allows implant-supported hybrid abutments and hybrid abutment crowns to be created chairside using clinically proven products. Cementation is achieved with the self- curing Multilink® Hybrid Abutment luting composite.

The Implant Care program assists CAD/CAM dentists and their practice teams in looking after their patients during the various phases of the implant treatment and life-long aftercare.

Staining technique

IPS e.max ZirCAD involves a quick sintering process, which allows monolithic and esthetically pleasing zirconia restorations to be created directly in the dental practice using an efficient procedure. This makes this popular restorative material also suitable for chairside applications.

IPS e.max ZirCAD is known for its high flexural strength (1,200 MPa*) and high fracture toughness. It allows the fabrication of restorations with considerably lower wall thicknesses (posterior crowns: minimum 0.6 mm; anterior crowns: minimum 0.4 mm). Preparations preserve tooth structure and restorations can be cemented conventionally.

Glazing is achieved with IPS e.max CAD Crystall./Glaze, which is available in two versions, one with fluorescent effect and one without.

Processing options Once sintered, the restorations can either be:• glazed and fired,• stained (optional), glazed and fired,• polished.

Indications:• Crowns• Three-unit bridges

HT (High Translucency) – The minimally invasive block

1 1HT blocks feature a high translucency, similar to natural enamel. They are ideally suited for the fabrication of small restorations (e.g. inlays, onlays). Restorations made of the HT blocks convince users with their true-to-nature chameleon effect and exceptional adaptation to the remaining tooth structure.

MT (Medium Translucency) – The bright block

MT blocks are of a medium translucency. They are designed for restorations that require more brightness than HT restorations and more translucency than LT restorations.

LT (Low Translucency) – The versatile block

2LT blocks feature a low translucency, similar to natural dentin. They are ideally suited for the fabrication of large restorations (e.g. posterior crowns). Restorations made of the LT blocks convince users with their lifelike brightness value and chroma. These properties prevent the incorporated restorations from greying.

MO (Medium Opacity) – The classical block 3

Given their opacity, MO blocks are ideally suited for the fabrication of frameworks on slightly discoloured preparations.

I (Impulse) – The opalescent block

Restorations made of the Impulse blocks demonstrate pronounced opalescent properties. The blocks are available in two different versions of opalescence (Opal 1, Opal 2). They are designed for the fabrication of bright veneers for which an opalescent effect is desired.

LT (Low Translucency) – The versatile block

Given their low translucency, LT blocks are ideally suited for the fabrication of posterior crowns or bridges.
