Elaboration of Falcon Rules1. Safety is important at all times.

a. Students are expected to obey safety rules, traffic signs and signals, and J.P.O. instructions.b. Bicycles, skateboards, and scooters are to be walked on campus, placed on bike racks, and locked.c. Walk at all times on lanais, walkways and inside buildings.d. No objects are to be thrown unless it’s part of a class activity under direct instruction of a teacher.e. Use of the Buddy System when using the restroom.

2. Be in school on time and only during school hours. a. Students arriving after the bell rings (7:55 am) will be marked tardy. Students participating in pull out programs or special programs will be allowed a maximum of 5 minutes passing time. The exact time the student is to be in class will be determined by the teachers

involved.b. The only students who should be in school early are those participating in the breakfast program (7:15 am) and school related programs.c. Leave campus promptly after school unless enrolled in one of the after school programs. (M, T, Th, F

– leave at 2:05 pm release time). (W - leave at 1:05 pm release time).

b. There will be no unauthorized trading, buying or selling of items at school.c. Cell Phone Policy – All cell phone use is prohibited on campus during school hours

7:55 to 2:05 (Mon., Tues., Thurs., & Fri.) and 7:55 to 1:05 on Weds. Exceptions will be made for students who are required to carry cell phones due to medical reasons. During school hours, cell phones will need to be in the student’s backpack and turned off. All other emergency calls shall be directed to the office. Consequences: 1st Offense – When cell phone is seen and/or heard on school campus during school hours, the teacher will confiscate the phone and turn it in to the Vice Principal. Student must thereafter pick it up from the Vice Principal after school. 2nd Offense – Teacher will confiscate the phone, turn it in to the Vice Principal, and students’ parents must pick up after school from the Vice Principal.7. Keep quiet in and near buildings. a. Loud talking, yelling, etc. cause disturbance to classes and offices.

Playground Rules1. Play only in your designated areas.2. No body contact with other students.

A child who has a milk allergy may obtain juice, in place of milk, with a doctor’s written statement. Each month, parents are given the opportunity to purchase a maximum of 20 school lunches at a time foreach child. This program is a CASH ONLY program. Our Head Cashier will deposit the amount receivedfrom each student into the Meal Tracker program and issue a receipt to the parents. Please purchase only asmany lunches as your child needs. This will eliminate the need to give refunds when students move. The Purchase Plan forms, envelopes and deposit box are located in the main office. Payments made after 8a.m. will be posted on the next school day. Breakfast is not included in the lunch program.

Health Room ServicesAn updated TB clearance, immunization report, and physical are required for registration. Students

must have health records on file in the Health Room and special health information given to the health aide.In the health room, students may receive minor attention, but no medications are given without priorapproval. In case of illness or serious injury, parents will be notified and asked to pick up the student.Current emergency contact numbers are vital. Please submit any changes in written form to the mainoffice.

Change of Address and Telephone NumberTo be able to contact parents, relatives and friends in time of an emergency, the school will need any

change of addresses (home or work) and telephone numbers (including, but not limited to mobile phones,home, business, and/or pagers).

Please submit any changes in written form to the main office as soon as possible.

Visitors on CampusAll visitors must report to the office, sign in, and receive a VISITOR PASS. Friends, relatives and

siblings are not allowed to attend classes unless special prior arrangements have been made with theAdministration. A visitor’s pass will also be worn.

Field TripsStudents attend several field trips during the course of the school year. Please read the notices that are senthome carefully because the requirements or preparations for each field trip are different.

Guidelines for field trips are as follows:1. All monies and fees are due by 8:00 AM 3 days prior to the event. Students not meeting the requirement will not be able to accompany their class and will remain in school.2. The school accepts CASH ONLY (no checks or credit cards) for field trips, which should be sent in an envelope with your child’s name, room number and permission slip.3. Students are required to wear athletic shoes for all field trips. Students without athletic shoes will not be able to accompany their class and will remain in school.4. Please have your child in school by 7:55 AM.

Only monies for Admission will be refunded.

Drop Off and Pick Up ProceduresChildren may be dropped off or picked up in front of the school. (refer to new traffic flow pattern)

Please be sure to walk in the designated cross walks and follow the F.S.P’s instructions. Stay on thesidewalks.

Parking in red or yellow areas is prohibited. Please do not double park. Do not block or park in staff stalls.The following is prohibited:

Tardy and AbsenceSCHOOL BEGINS AT 7:55 AM. Please send your child (ren) to school on time.If your child is tardy, you must send a note or call the office with the reason of the tardiness or bring yourchild into the office to have a tardy slip made out for admission to class.If your child will be absent, you must inform the school by one of the following methods:

1. Send a note to your child’s teacher stating the reason for the child’s absence.2. Call in to the office and leave a message on the recorder. State your name, date, time, the child’s name, teachers’ name, room number and reason for absence.

Frequent tardies and absences will result in more severe consequences:5 combined absences or tardies: Teacher will call the parents6th tardy/absence: Referral will be sent to the counselor7th tardy/absence: Referral will be sent to the Vice Principal For extended absences, please submit written notification to the Principal at least two weeks prior to thestart of the absence.

Homework Policy Homework is an extension of the studies being learned in class and will be considered as an integral part ofthe student’s performance in class. Each teacher will provide clear directions and expectations for the homework to the students.

The students are responsible for knowing the assignments and taking all necessary materials home in orderto complete the work. The students are responsible to hand in all assignments on the date requested. If not turned in promptly, itwill be considered incomplete. Homework may be provided for students who are ill. Parents should make arrangements with the teacherto know how and where the homework should be sent. (School office, sibling, or another student, etc.)For illnesses, please notify the office by 8:30 am on the day of the illness, if homework is requested.

Progress and Status Report (aka Report Card) The progress and status report indicates your achievement and progress toward achieving theCommon Core Standards. The Standards establish high and challenging expectations for all students;describe what students should know, be able to do, and care about; and serve as a basis for curriculum,instruction and assessment in Hawaii’s public schools. The curriculum for each course is based on thestandards relevant to the course. This report however, cannot communicate everything you might possiblywant to know about your current progress. Communication between family and the school staff is highly encouraged. If you have any questions orconcerns, please contact your teacher or counselor.

Early ReleaseIf you need to leave campus for an appointment, etc., you must bring a note from your parent to the

office before school, or your parent may call the office in advance to receive an off-campus pass. Your parentmust come to the office to receive the off-campus pass and pick you up. If at all possible, please schedule allappointments after school.

A+ ProgramChildren in grades K – 6 whose parents both work are eligible for this after-school on-campus

program. It begins as soon as school is out and continues until 5:30 PM. This program is designed with the

State’s Licensing standards as a guide and the ratio of children to staff is 20 to 1. Applications are availableat the A+ office. Their office hours are after school until 5:30 pm. Phone #: 421-4288.

Expected Behavior during AssembliesEvery teacher is responsible for discussing proper conduct with his/her students prior to every group

activity. To produce an assembly requires tremendous labor, coordination, practice, and assistance. Properbehavior and attentiveness remain the greatest compliments you can give for this hard work. Follow theseguidelines:

1. Enter the designated assembly area with your teacher at the prescribed time. Your teacher will remain in the same location as your group.2. All classes are to stay together.3. Please be seated quickly and quietly in the area assigned to your group.4. You are expected to be quiet and attentive during presentations. Booing,

whistling, stomping, or other disorderly actions will not be tolerated.5. Each class’ actions remain the responsibility of the supervising teacher.6. Any student demonstrating apparent disregard for proper conduct will be removed.7. Under no circumstances are you to leave an assembly unless dismissed by the

hosting group, Administration, or your teacher.

Expected Behavior while in the Main Office1. Use the main entrance.2. Go to the office for business purposes only. Don’t loiter in the office.3. Be RESPECTFUL of everyone in the office.4. Wait patiently until you are helped.5. Clearly explain why you are there.6. Friends must remain outside.7. Have a seat where directed and remain quiet.8. Library Policy Aliamanu Elementary Library contains approximately 16,000 books, videos, DVD’s and CD-ROM’s.It is fully automated with a computerized circulation and search system (OPAC). Students may use thelibrary computers for research or to complete school assignments.

The library maintains a school webpage on the Internet. It contains important links that can be usedfor homework, projects and entertainment. The webpage also contains the link for the library’s bookcollection and can be accessed 24 hours a day at http://www.k12.hi.us/~aliamanu/library.splash.htm.

Students may use the library facility according to the following grade chart:1. Kindergarten – Grade 2: only with their classrooms2. Grades 3 – 6: During recess and with class

Borrowing privileges also varies with grade. The following chart details how many books each grade levelstudent may borrow:

1. Kindergarten and Grade 1: 1 book2. Grade 2: 2 books3. Grades 3-6: 3 books

The loan period for students is two weeks. Students are responsible for ALL books borrowed. Lostand damaged books are charged to the student. If a book is lost or significantly damaged, the student willNOT be allowed to borrow additional materials until payment for the lost or damaged book has been made. Ifa student leaves or graduates out of the school with an outstanding balance, the charge will remain on thestudent’s record and transfer with the student (within State of Hawaii schools) until payment has beenreceived.

Internet PolicyInternet access supports the efforts of the Department of Education and the Hawaii State Public Library System.

It enhances educational and research activities, provides a conduit for the transmission and sharing of information,provides access to appropriate national and international resources, and assists in developing the literacy skills necessaryin a technology-rich society. The valuable information and interaction available on the worldwide network far outweighthe possibility that users may locate material that is not consistent with the education goals of Aliamanu Elementary.Students are expected to use the Internet at school for education purposes consistent with the school’s curriculum andto reject any inappropriate material that they may encounter. The smooth operation of the Internet relies upon the properconduct of the end users who must adhere to strict guidelines. These guidelines are provided to help users become awareof the responsibilities they are about to acquire. In general this requires efficient, ethical and legal utilization of thenetwork resources. If a user violates any of these provisions, Internet privilege will be revoked. Furthermore, dependingon the violation, School disciplinary action and/or appropriate legal action MAY be taken. A complete write up andpermission form is in the portfolio given to every student when they enter AES. The permission slip must be signed byparents and students before students may use the internet at school.

ALIAMANU ELEMENTARY SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY

STATEMENT OF POLICYAll students attending AES will be expected to meet the school dress code criteria effective the first day ofschool. Students will wear a uniform shirt, and adhere to the specific criteria for bottoms, footwear, and

This policy applies at all times, on campus, in buses, on field trips and otherschool sponsored activities.SHIRTS� All students will wear a uniform shirt as provided by the selected school uniform vendor.� Shirts that are not tucked in must not extend below shorts, skirt, or skorts.� Shirts may not be altered (sleeves cut off, tie dyed, written on, etc.)BOTTOMS� All shorts/pants must be worn with the waistband at the waist and be able to be worn without a belt.� Skirts, shorts and skorts for girls must be no shorter than fingertip length when arms are extended.� Overalls/jumpers must be worn with all straps fastened and with a uniform shirt.UNACCEPTABLE bottoms include:

Saggy, baggy or oversized pants/shortsPants/shorts that are see through, reveals underwear, or are body huggingTorn jeans/shortsUnfastened overalls/jumpersLoose or hanging belts or chains

High heel shoes (maximum shoe heel height is 1.5 inches)Any shoe with wheels may not be worn on campus.

OUTERWEAR� Jackets, sweatshirts, sweaters or windbreakers may be worn over a uniform shirt.UNACCEPTABLE outerwear includes:

Sweatshirts or jackets with inappropriate patches, logos, or designs promoting alcohol, drugs,tobacco, promiscuity, or violence.HEADWEARHats, caps, visors, and sunglasses are not to be worn on campus, except for approved field trips and physicaleducation activities, or approved school activities. Only those students with medical needs will be allowed towear headwear in the classroom.FREE DRESS DAYSEvery Friday is a “Free Dress Day” when students are not required to wear the school uniform. On these daysstudents are expected to dress in an age-appropriate manner, wearing clothes that are in good taste withoutbeing a distraction to others.No halters, spaghetti straps, see through tops, low neck lines or low hanging jeans. NO makeup.CONCLUSIONUniforms can be a positive contributing factor to improve school safety, and focus student creativity onachievement and leaning success. As parents, staff, students, and members of the community work together,a uniform policy becomes part of a strong overall school safety program that supports the learning success ofall students.

Donated uniforms will be available for students meeting the financial eligibilityrequirements. (AFDC eligibility and financial proof of eligibility is required.)Protection of Student’s Constitutional Rights (BOE Guideline #3)As stated in the Religious Expression in Public School Guide (August 1995), students may display religiousmessages on items of clothing to the same extent that they are permitted to display other comparablemessages. Religious messages will not be singled out for suppression, but will be subject to the same rulesas generally apply to comparable messages. The Aliamanu Elementary School Uniform Policy will notprohibit students from wearing or displaying expressive items so long as they do not independently contributeto disruption by interfering with the discipline or rights of others. The constitutional rights of students will berespected and AES will not impose any messages political or otherwise, on the school uniform.Waiver (BOE Guidelines #4)Parents wishing to exempt their student from the uniform policy may “opt out” by requesting the Applicationfor Exemption from the school office. Parents should:

1. Return the completed form to the office2. Meet with the school administrator to discuss the nature of the objection3. Review acceptable student attire

(Exemptions are valid for one year and must be renewed at the beginning of each new school year.)Students with inappropriate attire will be referred to the school office. If warranted, parents will be called tobring a change of clothing.

RewardsHawaii has established and supported a state wide system of public education. Education is a most

important function of the state and is the foundation of good citizenship. The Department is committed toteach proper behavior which is beneficial to the educational process and self-development; to deterstudents from acts which are self-destructive, self-defeating and anti-social; and to maintain proper studentconduct while the student’s educational activities and responsibilities remain uninterrupted.

To encourage and maintain proper student conduct in the educational process and to preserve theproper educational environment, our school promotes many programs, some of which are listed below: 1. “Student-of-the-Quarter”

Each classroom recognizes at least one and not more than four students for good citizenship eachquarter. There is a quarterly assembly honoring these students and their parents are invited to attend.

2. Habits of Mind Students Teachers recognize students each quarter for appropriately using their Habits of Mind based on the Word of the Quarter.

There is a quarterly assembly honoring these students and their parents are invited to attend. 3. Falcon Bucks

Each student can receive falcon bucks to be collectively combined per class to win a monthly reward. (rewards will vary)

Students are further encouraged to pursue good citizenship in their classrooms.

Middle Level Education Promotion Policy # 4502Approved as of School Year 2010-2011:

The Board of Education recognizes that young adolescence is a critical period in the developmentand education of students. Middle level students must develop 21st century learning skills and be

able to use technological tools. Therefore, all students in grades six, seven and eight shall berequired to take language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies and be able to demonstratetheir 21st century knowledge and skills.Students will receive an academic unit for each of the core content courses to be promoted to thenext grade level. Successful completion shall be based on academic proficiency on identifiedbenchmarks.

ConsequencesThe Department of Education’s Chapter 19 publication lists consequences of unlawful conduct (Class A andB violations). A student who repeatedly disregards department (Class C) and school (Class D) conduct ruleswill be referred to the school administrators. Disciplinary action shall be taken for Class A through Doffenses in grades kindergarten through six within the schedule provided:(Steps to be followed after teacher have exhausted all avenues.)Step 1: Reprimand and warning by Administrator and a call or note to parents. Counselor is to be notified to check confidential files and cumulative folders.Step 2: Conference with student, teacher, parent, and administrator. Agree to a cooperative plan of action for remedial or corrective assistance.

Assault means…you intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly caused serious bodily injury orbodily injury to another person with or without a dangerous instrument.

Assault is a Class A offense which is unlawful conduct for which you can be arrested and/orsuspended in school.

What Happens If… I bring my BB gun to school? A BB gun, an air gun, in addition to starter guns, shotguns, or cross bows along with

explosives, or any weapon which will readily expel a projectile are considered violations ofthe Hawaii Gun Free Act.

This means that you SHALL BE EXCLUDED from attending school for not less thanone calendar year. Only the Superintendent of Education, on a case-by-case basis, maymodify the exclusion.

What Happens If… my friend gives me a pack of marijuana and I have it in my pocket?but don’t use it?

You may be suspended up to 92 days. The Zero Tolerance policy states that any child whopossesses, sells or uses illicit drugs while attending school may be suspended as determinedby the Principal and approved by the Complex Area Superintendent.

What Happens If… I bring a look-alike gun to school? You could be arrested for “harassment”, a Class B offense. Displaying or possessing a “look-alike” gun or weapon is listed under one of the definitions

for harassment, unlawful conduct.

What Happens If… I call my friend a “fag”? You may be charged with harassment as it means a person acts with the intent to harass,

bully, annoy or alarm another individual.

Review of AgendaThe entire agenda is reviewed in homeroom class during the first two weeks of each semester. This

information is very important and this review is the students warning of the rules set forth. The student is tosign and date to show that the material was reviewed in school. The homeroom teacher will mark in this areato indicate that it was signed when the review was completed.
