PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear parents and guardians,

On Monday, a special assembly was held to celebrate and give thanks for Andrew Crossett being Principal of our school. This assembly in Celebration Week, with the theme of ‘Thank You’, was very fitting. The whole school gathered in the Hall at 12.30pm. A number of parents and a representative of the Crossett family joined us. The assembly included a beautiful rendition of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ by the Chamber Choir accompanied by Chris Cavill, messages for the children about connections in life by James Douglas and Judith Watkins, messages from the students by Audrey and Abby as well as a photo reflection of Andrew’s time at Essex Heights. Throughout the assembly, the children were very respectful and joined into the spirit of the event. At the conclusion of the assembly, everyone joined to sing the Western Bulldogs theme song. Following a stirring rendition, the whole school gathered at ‘The Heights’ and three school leaders released three white doves as a symbol of our love and thanks for Andrew.

Special thanks to James and Judith for their contribution, to Chris Cavill and Tanya for their work with the choir, to the students who sent messages, to Ina and Kathy for the photo reflection, and to the many families that were able to attend the assembly.

Hari Indonesia

Yesterday we celebrated Indonesian Day. The children were involved in many exciting activities including Sumatran Drumming and Dance, classroom activities and Independence Day games. All the classes also created marvellous Indonesian Doorways into their classrooms. In the afternoon, our guest speaker entertained the children with stories of his home in West Papua and his journey to Australia. All the children also joined in and sang a short children’s song in his Indonesian dialect. As I moved around the school, the children were all involved and having a great time, all day. Thanks to Bu Sarah for her meticulous organisation of the whole day and to the Indonesian Captains for their support and help all day.

House Athletics

Last Friday the House Athletics were held at the Bill Sewart Athletics Track in East Burwood. It was great to see the senior students (Year 3 to 6) competing so well and encouraging each other to do their best. There were many outstanding results and I am sure that Mr Wooster will have a tough time selecting the Athletics team for the next level of competition. It was also very pleasing to see so many parents there supporting their children and helping out. This was really appreciated. In a very tightly contested competition, Nolan House won the day. Congratulations to all competitors!

Finally, thanks to Ben Wooster for the organisation of the whole day, to the House Captains for their support and to all the staff that judged different events and joined in to make the day a great success.

Year 4 Marimba Concert

On Tuesday, the Year 4 Marimba students entertained us with three pieces at a special music assembly just before lunch. The children played so well, and it truly showed their persistence and musicianship. Well Done Year 4, great effort!

Thanks to Gemma Belfrage for her musical leadership and instruction of our children.

Prep Writing

On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of visiting Prep B while they were learning to write letters. They were so enthusiastic about learning to write and they were also providing each other with feedback about why they liked their partner’s work. It was so pleasing to hear the children encouraging each other and giving them a positive tick for their work.

Well done Prep B, keep learning to write your letters!!!

Parent Opinion Survey 2017: Urgent Reminder

WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT YOU THINK

Due to the business of the past few weeks, there are still a number of families that have not completed the Parent Opinion Survey. If you have been randomly selected, you will have received information and details regarding the process. Please make sure that you complete the online survey by 27 th August.

This yearly survey is designed to assist our school in gaining an understanding of parents’ perception of school climate, student engagement and relationships with our parent community. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

I encourage all families that have been contacted to please complete the online survey as soon as possible. It should only take about 15 minutes to complete the survey. Please be assure that your responses are completely confidential and that the survey is conducted anonymously.

The survey results will be reported back to our school at the end of September. Survey results will be communicated to parents through the 2017 Annual Report.

We look forward to your feedback so that we can continue to make our school the best it can be for the benefit of all of our children.

George Perini Principal

Our annual National Songwriting Competition is a nationwide initiative designed to encourage creativity and self-expression through songwriting.

“Songwriting is a highly creative process. We want kids to free their imagination and engage with learning in a fun way” – Don Spencer, Founder & CEO.

Angela Millan School Banking Coordinator

Thanks to the fantastic efforts of our School Banking students, we raised $864.10 in Term 2 for our school, through School Banking commissions. This brings our total so far for the year, to $1,912.22. Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).

Keep up the great work, and remember, School Banking day is every Tuesday.
