Birthstone for the Month of March:

AQUAMARINE

From the light blue of the sky to the deep blue of the sea, aquamarines shine over an extraordinarily beautiful range of mainly light blue colours. Aquamarine is a fascinatingly beautiful gemstone. Women the world over love it for its fine blue shades which can complement almost any skin or eye colour, and creative gemstone designers are inspired by it as they are by hardly any other gem, which enables them to create new artistic cuts again and again.

Born February 7, 1929, in Tocopilla, Chile, to Ashkenazi Jewish parents of Russian origin; Alejandro Jodorowsky (or Alexandro Jodorowsky) has worn the many hats of Actor, Director, Producer, Composer, Mime, Comic Book Writer and Psychotherapist throughout his life.

In 1973 he adopted Mexican citizenship, but some years later he was natural-ized as French. He is particularly known for having directed a handful of esoteric, surreal and shocking films, and for having written several comic books.

The revered cult filmmaker once stated, "I ask of cinema what most North Americans ask of psychedelic drugs." He is also a New Age spiritualist, and one of the world's leading researchers of the Tarot.

Lately committing a lot of attention to developing a psychological therapy called, "Psychomagic" which aims to heal the psychological wounds suffered in the early stages of life. This therapy is based on the belief that the performance of cer-tain outside acts can directly act upon the unconscious mind, releasing it from a se-ries of traumas, some of which are passed down from generation to generation. These acts are prescribed by the therapist after having studied the patient's per-sonality and family tree.

Prior to adopting the Mexican citizenship, he created the Panic Movement, together with Roland Topor and Fernando Arrabal in 1962. He has also worked with famous artists such as Marcel Marceau, Maurice Chevalier, H.R. Giger, Dan O’ Bannon, Jean Giraud (Mœbius).

It was on December 3, 2005, that he officiated at the non-denominational marriage ceremony of friend Marilyn Manson and Dita Von Teese at Castle Gurteen in Kilsheelan, home of artist Gottfried Helnwein, in Tipperary, Ireland. Manson has stated that Jodorowsky influenced his entire visual style.

OSTARA

Also Known As: Alban

Eilir

Festival of the Trees

Spring Equinox

Rite of Eostre

Eostar

This is the Spring Equinox and a time for beginnings, planting spells, and tending your garden. Poking up through the still-barren ground are the hopeful shoots of early flowers, and its starting to smell like Spring outdoors.

Ostara stems from the name of the Teutonic Goddess "Eostre". It's not an accident that it sounds suspi-ciously like a Christian holiday that is celebrated around this time. Again another example where the "new" religion borrowed from the old. Ostara is also one of the more colorful holidays. Feasting and so-cializing are important to this holiday as well as the return of colour and spring.

Equinoxes are times of balance between light and darkness, when day and night are of equal length. The egg, is a powerful symbol. It is almost universally understood to represent fertility, rebirth, and resur-rection. We see this example, looking at Imbolc, that which was "in the belly" is not finally born. The world is re-born and comes back to life.

The balance shifts. Light is mastering the darkness. Winter is finally over. Celebrate!!!

He started his film career in Mexico, where he later made most of his films, with Fando y Lis (1968). The feature-length film debuted in Acapulco at the Film Festival and is famous for having incited a full scale riot there, requiring that Jodorowsky be smuggled out in a limousine.

El Topo (1970), a mystical western, was his second film and is now considered a cult classic. John Lennon and Yoko Ono helped arrange the film's release and dis-tribution in the United States through Beatles manager Allen Klein.

Jodorowsky's third film, La Montaña Sagrada (The Holy Mountain) (1973), was entirely financed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. At a projected budget of $1,500,000 (in USA dollars), it was to have been the most expensive Mexican film production to date. The film reportedly cost only half that amount.

Jodorowsky began working in 1975 on an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune. The project was intended to involve his son Brontis (Paul), Orson Welles as the Baron, Salvador Dali as the Emperor, Mick Jagger as Feyd Rautha, Alain Delon as Duncan Idaho, Geraldine Chaplin as Lady Jessica, Dan O'Bannon for the script, Chris Foss, Pink Floyd, H.R. Giger and Jean Giraud (Mœbius). Ultimately, its funding evaporated, but Jodorowsky claimed it was sabotaged by the major studios in Hollywood because it was too French.

Several of the people working on Jodorowsky's version of Dune later worked on Alien with elements (specifically those designed by Giger) similar to that of the failed Dune project. In the early 1980s, David Lynch would later make the first film adaptation of Dune.

In 1980, Jodorowsky directed a children's film, Tusk, in India from a novel by Reginald Campbell. Jodorowsky has since publicly disowned this film.

In an interview with Premier Magazine, Jodorowsky said his next project will be a gangster film called King Shots. Marilyn Manson will play a 300-year-old pope, he said, and Nick Nolte has also expressed interest in working with the director. In the interview, Jodorowsky also said he wanted to make a sequel to El Topo, but couldn't raise the funds.

However, aquamarine blue is also the colours of water with its life-giving force. And aquamarine really does seem to have captured the lucid blue of the oceans. No wonder, when you consider that according to the saga it originated in the treasure chest of fabulous mermaids, and has, since ancient times, been regarded as the sailors' lucky stone. Its name is derived from the Latin 'aqua' (water) and 'mare' (sea). It is said that its strengths are developed to their best advantage when it is placed in water which is bathed in sunlight. However, it is surely better still to wear aquamarine, since according to the old traditions this promises a happy marriage and is said to bring the woman who wears it joy and wealth into the bargain. An ideal gem, not only for loving and married couples.

Aquamarine is one of our most popular and best-known gemstones, and distinguishes itself by many good qualities. It is almost as popular as the classics: ruby, sapphire and emerald. In fact it is related to the emerald, both belonging to the beryl family. The colour of aquamarine, however, is usually more even than that of the emerald. Much more often than its famous green cousin, aquamarine is almost entirely free of inclusions. Aquamarine has good hardness (7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale) and a wonderful shine. That hardness makes it very tough and protects it to a large extent from scratches. Iron is the substance which gives aquamarine its colour, a colour which ranges from an almost indiscernible pale blue to a strong sea-blue. The more intense the colour of an aquamarine, the more value is put on it. Some aquamarines have a light, greenish shimmer; that too is a typical feature. However, it is a pure, clear blue that continues to epitomize the aquamarine, because it brings out so well the immaculate transparency and magnificent shine of this gemstone.

The bright blue of this noble beryl is making more and more friends. The various colour nuances of aquamarine have melodious names: the rare, intense blue aquamarines from the Santa Maria de Itabira mine in Brazil, which make every gemstone lover's heart beat faster, are called 'Santa Maria'. Similar nuances come from a few gemstone mines in Africa, particularly Mozambique.

To help distinguish them from the Brazilian ones, these aquamarines have been given the name 'Santa Maria Africana'. The 'Espirito Santo' colour of aquamarines from the Brazilian state of that name is of a blue that is not quite so intense. Yet other qualities are embodied in the stones from Fortaleza and Marambaia. One beautiful aquamarine colour was named after the Brazilian beauty queen of 1954, and has the name 'Martha Rocha'.

The aquamarine was the stone of the sea-goddesses and sirens of the past times. Beads of aquamarine are found in ancient Egyptian mummy tombs. They were used as a tribute gemstone to the Gods of the Nether world for safe passage. King Solomon is said to have worn one in his breast plate of the 12 holy gemstones.

Deity of the Month

MAZU (or Ma-tsu) —Goddess of the Sea

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Chinese goddess Mazu has many names and titles. Known in different regions as Matsu, Ma-Tsu, A-ma, Tianhou, and other names, with numerous titles that include "Motherly Matri-arch", "Kuan Yin of the Southern Sea", "Daughter of the Dragon", and "Empress of Heaven". Although some experts feel she may be a version of the older goddess Kuan Yin (who is better known in most western countries), Mazu is deeply rooted in the hearts of her people, especially coastal areas in the East, and is best known as the "Goddess of the Sea".
In folk tradition it is believed that, when you are facing great difficulty, you can call her by the name "Mazu" and she will immediately come to your rescue. If, however, you address her as the "Empress of Heaven", she will have to take time to put on her fine clothing and will be de-layed in coming to your aid!
The Chinese goddess Mazu originated with the deification of a young woman named Lin Mo Niang who had performed numerous miracles during her short life. A kind-hearted girl with a vast knowledge of Chinese medicine, she was known as a healer, curing the sick while teach-ing people how to prevent illness and injury. Many of the miracles she performed involved quelling storms at sea, so it is hardly surprising that she is known as the protector of all sea-faring people.
Mazu was born on a small island in the straits of Taiwan off the coast of southeastern China in 960 A.D. Her middle-aged parents, the Lins, already had six other children, only one of them a girl. Her mother prayed to the goddess of mercy, Kuan Yin, for another daughter. Hearing her fervent prayers, Kuan Yin came to her in a dream, giving her a flower blossom to eat that caused her to conceive the next day.
Continued on Next Page ……….
The baby was named Lin Niang (in China the family name, or surname, comes first). At her birth the room was filled with a brilliant light and the fragrance of fresh blossoms. As a new-born, she was strangely silent. Alert and healthy, she did not cry at all during the first month of her life, leading her parents to nickname her Mo (which means "silent").
As she grew it quickly became apparent that Lin Mo was gifted with remarkable intelligence and an eidetic (photographic) memory. Supernatural powers were soon to become apparent as well.
Visiting a Buddhist temple when she was four years old, Lo Min began her incredible journey of spiritual enlightenment. Standing before a statue of the goddess Kuan Yin, she was given her "second sight", the ability to sense or "know" events that would happen in a distant time or place.
At the age of ten she began to study Buddhism, and when she was 13 she was accepted as a student by an elderly priest who, recognizing her profound spirituality, passed on to her the secret mysteries of Taoism.
One legend ascribes her mystical powers to an event that took place when she was fifteen. Going with her girlfriends to check out their new dresses in the reflections of a pool, a sea creature erupted out of the water and was holding a bronze disk out, offering it to the girls. Terrified, the others ran away, but the brave Lin Mo calmly accept the bronze. From that mo-ment on, she began to display unusual powers -- powers that grew daily and made her a leg-endary figure at a young age.
Already held in high esteem by the villagers for her healing, Lin Mo could now predict changes in the weather and could announce when it was a safe time for sailors and fisher-men to set out to sea. To this day sailors from places as far-flung as China, Okinawa, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and even San Francisco pray to Mazu before setting out . . . and give thanks to her upon their safe return.
It can be seen from the names of aquamarine colours just how important Brazil is among the countries where aquamarine is found. Most of the raw crystals for the world market come from the gemstone mines of that large South American country. Every now and then, large aquamarine crystals of immaculate transparency are also found with a magnificent color, a combination which is very unusual in gemstones. And very occasionally, sensationally large aquamarine crystals come to light in Brazil, such as the crystal of 110.5 Kg found in 1910 in Marambaia/Minas Gerais, or for example the 'Dom Pedro', weighing 26 Kg and cut in Idar-Oberstein in 1992 by the gemstone designer Bernd Munsteiner, the largest aquamarine ever to have been cut. However, aquamarines are also found in other countries, for example Nigeria, Zambia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
There is hardly any other gemstone in modern jewellery design which is refined in such a variety of ways as aquamarine. Whether it is fashioned as a clear, transparent gem in the classical step cut, or creatively cut in a more modern design, it is always fascinatingly beautiful. Uncut too, or with many inclusions which can be brought into play by the designer in the way in which the stone is cut, it can be refined to produce the most beautiful creations. Designers call it their favorite gemstone. Again and again they take the world by surprise with a new, modern artistic cut, and when they are breaking new ground, aquamarine is a gem that they particularly like to work with. Without doubt, these creative designer cuts have contributed to the great popularity of this gem. The lucid color of aquamarine makes it easy to see inclusions. For this reason, aquamarine should always be of the greatest possible transparency. On the other hand, particularly charming effects can sometimes be achieved in the way the gemstone is cut by bringing the inclusions into play. The light colours of aquamarine leaves the gemstone designer free to bring out the brilliance of the gem with fine grooves, notches, curves and edges. In this way, each aquamarine becomes a unique specimen, whose magical attraction no woman can resist.
It was after his third movie, Tusk, that he started to deeply study the Tarot and started The Incal with Jean Giraud (Mœbius). This graphic novel has its roots deep in the Tarot and its symbols. I.e. the protagonist of The Incal, John Difool, is linked to the Fool card. The Incal (which would have branch off into a prequel and sequel) would form the first in a sequence of several science fiction comic book se-ries, all published by Humanoids Publishing.
Aquamarine is also listed as a birth/natal or star stone for:
• Modern Birthstone - March
• Planetary Stone - Pisces
• Sun Sign (Star Sign) - Scorpio
• Ancient Arabic, Hebrew, and Roman birthstone for October
The gemstone Aquamarine is the modern March birthstone as adopted by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. It is also the birth stone for the Zodiac sign of Scorpio.
Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family and ranges in color from an almost colorless pale blue to blue-green or teal. The most prized color is a deep-blue aqua color. It is 7.5-8 on the Mohs-scale of hardness and gets its name from Latin words meaning water and sea.
The most valuable aquamarines come from Brazil, but it is also mined in Kenya and Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Russia. . Aquamarines on the market today are usually faceted, but when cut as a cabochon, they may display a cat's eye effect known as asterism.
Some gemstones are heated to high temperatures to enhance the color and/or clarity of a stone. Aquamarines are often heat treated to change a blue-green or teal colored stone to a pure blue. This results in a permanent color change.
