Fire Drill

On 10 Aug, APC conducted its first fire drill for 2017. On 31 Aug, we did our second fire drill, this time together with the AMC office staff. The staff and children of APC learned how to evacuate to two different locations – the field and the indoor basketball court at Fairfield Methodist School (Primary) – depending on the location of the fire.

Teachers’ Day

Teachers’ Day was celebrated on 31 Aug with a skit “Cinderella with a twist” put together by a few students to show their appreciation to the teachers. A buffet dinner at South Beach Kitchen, JW Marriot Hotel, rounded off the celebration. Ps David Ho represented the APC committee in joining the teachers for the dinner.

September School Holiday Programme

During the September h o l i d a y s , p u p i l s from the badminton team of

Woodlands Secondary School came to conduct some activities with the APC children for their VIA project. The children enjoyed the indoor games and group activities that the students organised and found their sharing about their s e c o n d a r y s c h o o l experiences interesting.

Upcoming Event

In the month of October, the APC teachers will put together a programme for Children’s Day, which will include a catered buffet meal for the children. APC will also start planning various interesting holiday programmes for the year-end holiday.

30-day Mid-Autumn Festival Publicity and Outreach21 Aug to 19 Sep, Monday to Friday 3 – 5pm & Weekends, 1 – 3pm

Jesus’ Great Commission is to “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations”. We thank God for sending Pr Anna Loo, who has a burden for lost souls, to the Chinese Ministry. With her passion, she fired us up to do a 30-day outreach programme.

When it was first suggested, we felt that it was not possible to go out every day to do this outreach. However, we obeyed and went along with her proposal.

The first day was encouraging with 9 people participating. Our daily average has been between 4 and 11 people. We also thank God for the English service members who came to co-partner in this event.

Each day, we began with worship and listened to a short encouraging word from Preacher Anna before praying for God’s leading on where to go for outreach. We have been to Ghim Moh, One North, Clementi, NUH, Telok Blangah, Dover, Holland, etc.

The results have been encouraging. We have shared the gospel and invited people to attend our Mid-autumn Festival gathering on 23 Sep. We even have one person who accepted Christ. Mr. Yu Kok Kee, 86, came to our Sunday Service once and has since joined Queenstown Methodist Church, which is nearer his home.

So far, approximately 70 people have indicated interest to attend the 23 Sep event. During the last week of the outreach, we did home visits and re-invited them to join us.

This outreach has benefitted our members, especially those who are shy and have not done street evangelism. They are now not afraid to share the gospel with strangers.

The challenge of this outreach is the follow-up process for our guests who will come to our 23 Sep event. We believe God will provide us with the resources to face this challenge.

Glory and Praise to God Almighty for His faithfulness and guidance.

Prayer Meeting led by LCEC

Fifty-four friends and members of AMC gathered for a time of prayer on 29 Aug. We were blessed as the worship team comprising Mark Masillamoney, Donovan Lam and Benedict Ooi, led everyone in a time of praising our great and holy God. Lay Leader Pr Alan Ang provided the exhortation from Psalm 139: 14 and 1 Corinthians 12: 12-13 and encouraged the gathering to be united as the body of Christ.

Various heads of ministries came forward to share their thanksgiving and concerns for their respective ministries. A common thread was the need for more people to step forward to lead and serve in the various ministries. The shared burden of all the heads was for the needs of the people to be met and for them to be discipled to grow in the Lord.

Rev David Ho and Rev Dr Lorna Khoo concluded the session with their pastoral thoughts and encouraged all to be strong in the Lord and to constantly look out for one another.

40 Days of Morning Prayer, 1 July – 9 August

God desires us to pray, seek His face, humble ourselves and turn from our wicked ways. When we obey, He promises to hear from heaven, forgive our sins and heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Forty early mornings is no easy feat. At first, our bodies resist and our minds drag along. But each day God provides all we need to meet together. As we worship and read Scripture together, the Holy Spirit sensitizes us. We are awakened to our resistance to Christ’s Lordship. We recognise sinful habits that displease God and wound the Body of Christ. We repent before a merciful God and receive healing.

Prayer changes us before He can use us to heal our land. This is only the beginning. We are learning to pray together, listen and respond to Him in deep dependance. And we will keep learning.

40th Day of Prayer, 9 August

100 people turned up for AMC’s conclusion of 40 Days Prayer and Praise on National Day. Rev Yeung Hin Fai from Bukit Panjang Methodist Church gave an exhortation in Chinese with Mr Samuel Tiang as translator. Pr Wendy Chiang led the congregation to pray for family, church, community and nation. A declaration over Singapore’s destiny was also made. Holy Communion was served to conclude the prayer gathering too.

Two ladies shared their testimony of how they managed to come early in the morning for almost 40 days to pray. One lady gave thanks to God for how God miraculously saved and healed her daughter. The prayer meeting ended with a sumptuous breakfast prepared by thankful volunteers.

The Hospitality Team organised an appreciation dinner and fellowship on 28 July. We thank God for a heartwarming response from 23 members who came. We had a great time bonding with dedicated AMC ushers and befrienders serving God weekly throughout the year.

The motto of the AMC Hospitality Ministry is “Service with a heart and smile”. We desire to glorify God, by providing excellent service to everyone who comes to church! We are looking for people with a willing heart and available hands.

If you would like to love and serve God with your smile, time and talents, do consider joining the Hospitality Team as a usher and befriender. For more information, contact Thiru (email: [email protected]).

A group of us from both English and Chinese services in AMC headed down to Ghim Moh Market Food Centre on 19 August, Saturday, at 2:30pm. For two hours, we went out in small groups of 2s or 3s, and spoke with the people who were seated at the food centre tables. The Chinese Ministry also used this opportunity to invite pre-believers to the upcoming Mooncake Festival event. Here are some testimonies from a few of the groups:

Eddie & Susie See:We approached 2 elderly men, Mr Chow aged 74 and Mr Ong aged 80. We shared the gospel using 福 gospel tracts.. In response, Mr. Ong said all religions are the same, and that he lives day by day and never thought of the after-life nor where his soul would go. He mentioned that as long as his conscience is clear, he is not worried about his salvation. Before we left him, we reminded him about making a decision for his salvation.

David Lim & Linda Woon:Praise and thank God for the opportunity to chat with Kelvin Lee, an Uber driver taking his break. He had heard of Christ during his younger days in primary school, was invited to church by friends but holds fast to his faith in another religion. We shared notes of our faith and tried to draw him to know God our Creator, Lord and Saviour, and invited him to church. He said he's open to it, and mentioned perhaps we'll meet again. Please pray along for Kelvin Lee to know God and lead himself and his family to salvation.

Grace Tan & Ng Kai Qin:It was a very encouraging session. We had approached this single elder lady, June, who happened to be a Christian living in Ghim Moh with her unmarried elder brother. She shared that she has eye problems, bouts of cloudy vision and is very anxious about deterioration of her eyes. Her mother passed on earlier this year, and she has been busy clearing the house. However, there is friction in her relationship with her brother due to differences in their religion and personal habits. She also shared that she wants to grow closer to God. We prayed for her eyes, her spiritual growth and general blessing for her. She was emotional and teared up during sharing. She was encouraged by us and we exchanged numbers, offering to help her if she needs assistance with clearing her home or to pray with her.

Chan KaMan, Koh Pow Chin and Wong Chow Ling:We approached a 74-year old lady, Mdm Lee, who knows about Christ through her son-in-law, who has a soya bean drink stall business and is a Christian. She does follow him to church & is aware of Christianity but she is not baptised yet. Hence, we cut short on evangelising but asked about her personal health. She has backache very often and her legs and foot area are swollen. We offered to pray for her and she accepted! Later, we invited her to attend the Mooncake Festival event and exchanged numbers to keep in touch.

Church School Stewards Appreciation Lunch

On 3 Sep, a lunch was held to show appreciation for the faithful service of the Church School stewards. Ps David shared a short devotion from 1 Peter 5:1-7 to encourage the stewards to continue their role as shepherds of God’s children with willing and humble hearts. We thank God for a blessed time of lunch fellowship among the stewards.

Love Singapore, 6 August

The children celebrated Singapore’s National Day by praying for the good of the nation. The theme Bible verse was: Pray to the LORD for the city where you are living, because if good things happen in the city, good things will happen to you also. (Jeremiah 29:7)

The children learned that God wants them to be go-betweens for the city where they are living – Singapore. The Primary classes were assigned different spheres to pray for: family, school, government, church, security and recreation. The Pre-schoolers did their part too by colouring a picture of the good life they want to see in Singapore.

Beautiful Feet, 3 Sep

The Church School observed Missions Sunday on 3 Sep as part of AMC’s Missions month in September. The theme verse was: “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, the good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel reigns!“ (Isaiah 52:7)

The children were introduced to the AMC missionaries in Cambodia (Low Wee Teck and

family, and Pr Loh Han Chew) and Timor Leste (Rudy Wong and David Chan and family) and their work. As a way of participating in missions, the children wrote/drew love notes to the missionaries to encourage them in their ministry.

Fund Raising for Methodist School in Timor-Leste

David Chan made a short trip home over the 26-27 Aug weekend. We were glad to hear from him about his pioneering work for the Methodist School of Timor-Leste. He also shared at the MMS fundraising dinner on 27 August, which was well attended by AMC members.

Please continue to keep David Chan and family, as well as Rudy David Wong, in prayer for their missionary work in Timor-Leste. AMC will be launching a series of fund-raising activities for the Methodist School in Timor-Leste. We hope to raise $600,000, which is about 10% of the budgeted cost of the school building. We look forward to your generous support.

Young Adults Getaway 2017: 2 Days, 1 Night (1 – 2 Sep)

Young adults undergo multiple and significant changes in life. Work, marriage, relationships and leisure are just a few of the many facets of life they have to balance daily. Compounded by our fast-paced Singapore environment, life can be demanding and challenging. Hence, it is so appropriate that the topic for this year’s Young Adults’ Getaway is “Rest”.

Taking time away from the hustle and bustle of life, the young adults enjoyed a time of meditation and soaking in the Word shared by Pr Wendy and Ps David. There was also opportunity for community discussion on what they had learned.

A night of worship and prayer, when older adults came to pray for the young adults, with moments of solitude to commit one another, the church and the world to the Lord. To conclude the annual getaway, there was a board game session for bonding and fun.

youthphoriaMr Joel Tan / Mr Christopher Chng

Youth Sunday, 22 - 23 July

The annual Youth Sunday saw Youthphoria’s very own young leaders stepping up to take charge of running the Sunday service. Many youths were involved in the process of ushering, projection, leading worship, and decorating the Sanctuary with banners and posters. Our Youth Chairman Joel Tan gave his yearly report on the Youth Ministry. It was an extremely fulfilling time seeing Youthphorians gather together, working towards the common goal of ensuring both services ran smoothly. Indeed all glory goes to God for seeing us through the many years of Youth Ministry!

Protection and Respect, 27 August

Chris Chng first asked Youthphorians to think about the things they wanted protection from, before drawing examples from the Bible about God’s idea of protection. Reading Exodus 20:1-17, Chris explained the first thing the Lord gave the Israelites after taking them out of Egypt was the Ten Commandments. Knowing their sinful nature, He did this to protect them. He then reminded the youths that at the centre of God’s heart is His desire to protect our relationship with Him. Our response to God’s protection should be fear of the Lord and

true surrender through submission and obedience.

Youthphoria Games Day, 30 July

Guns ready? Ready or not, it’s Nerf wars time! Youthphorians gathered in teams at the FMS(P) basketball court after service to have a little fun in playing “Capture the Flag - Nerf style”. We also invited the P6s to join us in the fun, because what’s more bonding than working together with the same goal?

Teams strategically made barriers to protect themselves from enemy fire while simultaneously sending out troopers to attack the enemies’ cups and to steal their flags. Everything in the game happened in a blink of an eye, so working together was super important!

There was much laughter, fun and most importantly fellowship. However, the winners’ prize was shared among all, as after all everyone is a sibling in Christ!

Praying for Youthphorians, 27 August

The Youthphoria family prayed for the PSLE, N-, O- and A-level, and IB youths. “Father God, we commission these youths as ambassadors of Christ, to be living testimonies to their classmates and school-mates. As they revise and prepare for exams, EMPOWER them with your Holy Spirit so that they may stop to pray for their friends, say a word of encouragement to someone, pack some snacks and bless the people around them. We pray that they will stand in the gap to encourage the down-and-out, that they will minister to those feeling lost or stressed, and be that caring friend that will stop his/her own revision to help others... and in so doing, ENGAGING in your ministry in the midst of their exams. We pray for our youths to put all distractions away and to put due diligence into the revision that they need to do, and also remind them that they are not defined by their grades, but are dearly loved by you.. help them ENCOUNTER you in this period of national examinations. In Jesus Name, Amen!”

Visitation

The Primary 4 boys from 33J visited Bethany Methodist Nursing Home on 22 July as part

of their BB CARES. While there, they performed dialect songs and played bingo games with the residents. Before the visit, the boys self-organised a fundraising effort in school, running archery and Nerf gun game stalls and selling snacks. All proceeds raised were given as a contribution to the operational costs of the Home.

Family Day

For the first time this year during the 33J Family Day, we did pizza-making with our Primary 5 boys and

their parents. It was a good time of family bonding as parents and boys worked hard to knead dough to make their very own pizza as a pair, which they later savoured for lunch – or even brought back to share with their families! A big thank you to our very enthusiastic and capable Parents-In-Education (PIE) moms – Lydia Soh, Karen Ralls, Koh Yin Peng, Yoko Wilcox and Zeng Beiqing – who conducted the session.

Character Quest

33J also gives thanks to God for our Character Quest 2017 results. The national

Bible Knowledge competition, held on 19 August, focused on Obedience in the life-stories of Noah and Joseph. Out of the 109 competing teams and 491 participating boys from Companies in schools all across Singapore, one of our teams – consisting of Nathaniel Tang, Thaddeus Sim, Julian Khoo and Benaiah See – came in first, claiming the Champion’s Trophy. We thank God for seeing all our four teams through the training and competition. We believe that this experience has planted a seed in the lives of our boys that God will grow in His time. PASTORAL VISIT TO TIMOR-LESTE, 2-5 Sep “I have visited Timor-Leste 7 times since 2002 with Living Hope Methodist Church, which started the work there, mostly to Dili, Baucau and Gleno. This is my first trip after an absence of one decade.

The main purpose of this trip was to visit and spend time with missionaries and the Chan family, to touch base regarding their work and their lives, to encourage them and to see how we can support them further in their work.

During the four days, the Rev Teresa Wilborn and I had opportunities to do all that. I gave a message and served Communion to the missionaries when we were at the Gleno Methodist hostel and did a devotion with the children at the Methodist School, Timor-Leste (MSTL). Rev Teresa did a devotion for the hostelites at Gleno.

We also visited the possible locations of the MSTL to discern what the Lord might be saying regarding the land. We visited Cocoon and met with other key missionaries from other churches while we were there.

We were both greatly impressed by the great work that God has been doing through all our missionaries, especially David Chan with his pro-active, visionary and sacrificial leadership. PTL!”

Here are some videos of the trip: 1. Dili: to and from Gleno https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjqosWFSSJo&feature=youtu.be

The garden as a whole, are the work of the Mannars -- Joseph and Grace, the managers of the Gleno Methodist Hostel. The vision of the GOOD SOIL PROJECT is to help prepare the farmers (in the future)1. improve soil care 2. further enrich their composts 3. vary / diversify the produce. The goal is to make the people's nutrition better so that they will be healthier and stronger.
