Sermon Series: Generosity of the Cross

Thoughts from PB

Page 2 Abundant Life Community Church

The Cross is something we don’t like to think about too often. Even though it was the Cross of Jesus that brought me to freedom, peace and joy in a relationship with God. But have you considered how generous Jesus was by surrendering on

the Cross. Over the next month, we are going to investigate further how generous Jesus was by not holding back anything in giving his life for us on the cross. We are a blessed people. Personally I love Easter in the month of March. A fresh new beginning with Spring on its way, the flowers will be in bloom soon and Resurrection Sunday to celebrate that Christ is risen! Give this some thought…Jesus would rather die than live without you! You mean that much to God…how marvelous, how generous is our Lord J! Love and Prayers, PB and Kathy

Inside Tony’s Mind

One of my favorite Biblical events is the criminals and Jesus at Calvary. (Luke 23:39-43)

Frankly, the cross was a death device that made it hard and uncomfort-able to breathe. You'd think some would reserve their strength and breath for repent-ing and begging for their lives; a second chance.

There was 2 criminals that hung with Jesus that very day. One criminal used his last effort to mock Jesus and the other criminal defended Jesus. That very man who de-fended Jesus recognized his wrongs and stated that he deserves the punishment and Jesus didn't. And he [The Criminal] said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, "truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”(42,43)

This event always strikes me because I am undeserving of the kindness and compas-sion, that only Jesus can give. I may have not done anything as "awful," as these criminals. Although, Jesus, extends the same love to me when I need a second chance.

This Easter, how will you use your breath?

Why Eggs at Easter?

The Easter Egg symbolizes

the empty tomb of Jesus. Though an egg appears to be

like the stone of a tomb, a bird hatches from it with life.

Similarly, the Easter egg, for Christians it is a

reminder that Jesus rose from the grave, and that those who

believe will also experience eternal

life.

STEP 6: Willingness.

We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Step 6 is all about discovering hope. When we are upset, we often depend upon our addiction to make us feel bet-ter. As we get rid of our addiction, we face the deeper character defects that God wants to heal. Our addiction functions as a place of “shelter” from our pain. But when that “shelter” is removed, deep anger may surface, exposing even deeper character flaws that need healing. Jonah had a glaring defect of character: he couldn’t forgive and have compassion on the people of Nineveh, whom he hated.

When God decided not to destroy them, Jonah threw a temper tantrum. “The Lord replied, Is it right for you to be angry about this? Then Jonah went out to the east side of the city… And the Lord God arranged for a leafy plant to grow there, and soon it spread its broad leaves over Jo-nah’s head, shading him from the sun. The next morn-ing ..the plant soon died and withered away. And as the sun grew hot, God sent a scorching east wind to blow on Jonah. The sun beat down on his head until he grew faint and wished to die.” God did this to show Jonah that the real problem wasn’t the loss of his shelter. Hatred was the real problem. The removal of our sheltering addiction may expose deep problems. This may spark defensive anger as God touches our deepest hurts. It is all right to let the an-ger out. But it is also important to let God take care of the real problem. Jonah 4: 4-8. NLT

How can we honestly say that we are entirely ready for God to remove our defects of character? If we think in terms of all or nothing, we may get stuck here because we will never feel entirely ready. It is important to keep in mind that the twelve steps are guid-ing ideals. No one can work them perfectly. Our part is to keep moving, to get as close as we can to being ready. Most of us have made numerous attempts at self-improvement. Perhaps we have consciously tried to improve our attitude, our education, our appear-ance, or our habits. We may have had success in self-improvement on some level. However, when it comes to our struggles with defects of character, chances are we have experienced only deep frustration. There is a reason for our frustration. These character defects can only be removed, never improved. The illustration given us in the bible is that our sins and defect of character must be put to death, as Jesus

was, with the hope of new life to follow.
