The BIG 10, DEUCE: “No carved gods of any size, shape, or form of anything ... Don’t bow down to them and don’t serve them because I am GOD, your God, and I’m a most jealous God...” (Exodus 20:4-6) Moses is probably in panic mood at this point. Now Moses has not only brought forth that there is one God but also how NOT to worship Him. In today’s urban usage, deuce would mean a slang of number 2, a 2 in poker, an expression of “peace out”. We will be using deuce in its most popular meaning, feces. I

found it fitting that the 2nd commandment has to do with how NOT to worship the one true God. Moses is speaking to people who have been living under Egypt rule, who would have customs of idol making and wor-shiping.

God wants to distinguish His people and help them to keep focus on Who really matters and to watch for the trap of respecting, fearing, and having more reverence of an object over the real God. Why? Because we do this strange thing and service our time and attention to things that become god to us. Basically, everything next to God is deuces, feces, nothing comes close or deserves time.

For us today, it would mean the same: He is not to be molded into what you see as right in your own eyes by creating the image of God in your own understanding to replace Him or put to be equal with Him. God lays this down but also it’s an indication that there are other ways and we do those ways in expressions of grati-tude through music, prayer, time we spend with Him, the options are endless for us to service and worship Him alone. As you reflect, I encourage you to think of how awesome God is that He wants you not to waste time in making things to represent and worship Him but He just wants you. The Next Month: Third on the List.

Happy New Year, Tony Mejia

Brand New Ending “Nobody can go back and make a brand new start, but everyone can start today and make a new ending.” May 2014 be filled with surprising faith, unexplainable joy, and happy moments. I am so glad that God goes before us. My hope is that each day will be filled with a good beginnings and new endings. Philippians 1:6 says, “ being confident of this, that he who began a good

work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” May our confidence be in the Lord each day of 2014. I am sharing a series over January on “Transformation”…how does this happen? Can God really change me? Will I let God do that work? ….some of the questions to investigate and we look forward to a great time together.

Happy New Year with Love and Prayers, PB and Kathy

STEP 4 COURAGE The spiritual principle that is the foundation of Step 4 is courage. In Step 4 we made a search-ing and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

This means we take an honest look at ourselves so therefore this takes courage. Nehe-miah 9: 1-3 ‘Now on the twenty-forth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, in sackcloth and with dust on their heads. Then those of Israelite lineage separated themselves from all foreigners; and they stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers. And they stood up in their place and read from the book of the Law of the Lord their God for one-fourth of the day; and for another fourth they confessed and wor-shiped the Lord their God. As we make our moral inventory, we will probably find ourselves listing our destructive habits, our defects of character, the wrongs we have done,

the consequences of wrong choices that we now live with, and the hurts we have caused others. It’s like sifting through all the

garbage in our past. This is painful, but it is a necessary part of throwing away those rotten habits and

behaviors that, if not dealt with, will almost certainly spoil the rest of our life.

There have probably been times when we have ignored our own sins and problems and pointed a finger at someone else. We may be out of touch with our internal affairs be-cause we are still blaming others for our moral choices. Or perhaps we avoid self-examination by making moral inventories of the people around us. When God asked Adam and Eve about their sin, they each pointed a finger at someone else. “Have you eaten the fruit I commanded you not to eat?” “Yes”, “Adam admitted, but it was the woman you gave me who brought me the fruit, and I ate it.” “The serpent tricked me, she replied” (Genesis 3: 11-13. It seems to be human nature to blame others as our first line of defense. We also may avoid our own problems by evaluating and criticizing others. Jesus tells us, “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own?”…Hypocrite! First get rid of the log from your own eye; then perhaps you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.” Matthew 7: 3, 5. While doing this step, we must constantly remem-ber that this is a season of self examination. We must guard against blaming and examining the lives of others. There will be time in the future for help-ing others after we have taken responsibility for our own life.

Coming in January

“Let us never forget to pray. God lives. He is near. He is real. He is not only aware of us but cares for us. He is our Father. He is acces-sible to all who will seek Him.” ― Gordon B. Hinckley

Romans 8:26

And in the same way—by our faith—the Holy Spirit helps us with our daily problems and in our praying. For we don’t even know what we should pray for nor how to pray as we should, but the Holy Spirit prays for us with such feeling that it can-not be expressed in words.
