President Jacob Zuma’s State of the nation address and the anC’s Election Manifesto both heavily emphasised the celebration of successes through telling the positive stories of success instead of always highlighting the negative. The Sakhisizwe branch held an Election Manifesto launch meeting on Thursday 27 February, at the brackenpark Community Hall. The purpose of the meeting was to demystify the ruling party’s Manifesto with the aim of making sure that the branch members are on the same page with regards to the story to tell.The meeting was addressed by Robert Mashigo, a member of the ANC’s Regional

Executive Committee. Mashigo based his address on the ANC’s strategic objectives, which include non-racialism and non-sexism among other objectives. “This election presents us with a platform to tell our stories; women especially must take up this opportunity to tell their story,” said Mashigo.Mashigo spoke about the questions that should be asked by revolutionaries of liberation movements at this stage of the ANC’s existence. 20 years is a point where questions must be asked, and whether the movement was going forward with the revolution was the key question.“The ANC has consistently tested its

relevance and has repeatedly proven that it is not a party but a liberation movement concerned with the liberation of people,” Mashigo added.The ANC turned 102 this year. The celebrations were held in Mbombela and according to Robert Mashigo this proved beyond a doubt that the ANC has all the measures in place to get the country to where its Manifesto is leading.Issues such as the e-tolls, corruption, poverty, joblessness and service delivery were touched on, but the main message carried by Mashigo and other speakers was that the ANC has a good story to tell and that South Africa is a better place to live in.

Verskuiwings in die vyftigs

Die vorige keer het ons stilgestaan by die verskuiwing na Thokoza. Hierdie keer praat ons ’n bietjie oor die verskuiwing na Edenpark.Alle mense van kleur het dit vanaf die vyftigs moeilik gehad. In Vyftiende Straat in Amagogokweni, reg langs die begraafplaas, was daar 27 erwe aan die kleurlinggemeenskap toegewys. Hierdie gemeenskap het ook ’n sink-NG sendingkerk gehad wat barmhartigheidswerk onder die fabriekswerkers gedoen het. Baie van hulle het vir ’n ene James Barwell gewerk. Hy het sy werkers gehelp om na Palmietfontein (nou Thokoza) te trek en het vervoer vir al sy getroue werkers gereël. In Thokoza is die kleurlinggemeenskap op ’n gebied naby die motorhawe gevestig en daarvandaan verskuif na wat vandag as Edenpark bekendstaan.

agterop ingevul en geteken en gestempel word om die koop te bekragtig.Indien jy vasgetrap is met drank waaroor jy nie verslag kon lewer nie, was jy in groot moeilikheid en summier deur die polisie in hegtenis geneem.Oom Joe Tattie moes elke maand opruk na Germiston om sy lawaaiwatertjies te gaan koop. Met sy lisensie het hy sy maandelikse kwota drank gekoop: een bottel brandewyn, ’n halwe bottel jenewer (gin), ’n bottel wyn en ses biere!

red hat Sisters in Christ reik uit Red Hat Sisters in Christ is ‘n nie-regeringsorganisasie wat verlede jaar deur ‘n groupie dames van Alberton gestig is. Die organisasie steun op die tyd, kreatiwiteit en geld van gemeenskapskenkings om ‘n verskil te maak in die lewens van behoeftiges.Die Red Hat Sussies se eerste projek vir die jaar vind op 15 Maart plaas. Hulle reik uit na ‘n psigogeriatriese kliniek, genaamd Blymoedig, in die Noorde van Pretoria. Die kliniek is reeds in 1978 begin deur suster Lina Enslin en haar man. Aanvanklik was die idee dat hulle ‘n veilige omgewing wou skep vir bejaardes wat nie meer in staat was om na hulself te kyk nie. Met tyd het hul kliniek so gegroei dat hulle nou talle pasiënte inneem met Alzheimers, Schizophrenia, Parkinsons, Huntington’s chorea, Down’s sindroom, depressie en verstandelik gestremdheid. Suster Lina en haar personeel behandel hul pasiënte met soveel deernis en waardigheid en versorg almal volgens elkeen se behoefte. Julle kan natuurlik net dink dat dit nie elke dag die maklikste werk is nie en mens se hart wil breek as jy dink aan daardie pasiënte wat so hulpeloos en weerloos is. Party van die pasiënte se families het hulle net daar kom aflaai en van hulle vergeet. Die dames wil die kliniek graag voorsien met

Random acts of kindness

The latest viral internet trend, Neknomination, originated in Australia and involves a participant recording a video of themselves consuming a ridiculous amount of alcohol, nominating a friend to do the same and then uploading that video onto social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube. Neknomination has gone

through several adaptions in its short existence; in South Africa the adaption has seen the often negative trend being turned positive through random acts of kindness.A youth group from the NG Kerk Alberton-Suid recently did their part in spreading the smiles with random acts of kindness at the Meyersdal Mall parking area. The

youth successfully spread smiles by offering patrons of the centre an ice cream and helping them with their trolley. As a way to keep the movement going, NG Kerk Aasvoëlkop, NG Kerk Verwoerdpark and NG Kerk Ferramere were nominated to come up with their own creative random act of kindness.

Dear Mr EB Mthethwa,I am writing to you to complain and seek your assistance with regards to traffic problems in and around New Redruth.I live in St Michaels Street, where we are experiencing a lot of speeding motorists at all times of the day and night.When leaving and returning to the complex where I live, it becomes quite dangerous and dramatic. Having said this, a problem is created in Penzance Street, on the corner of St Michaels Street. Late in the afternoon there seems to be excessive traffic at the shops and bar in Penzance Street, which causes a second problem as the vehicles park on the corners and obstructs drivers’ view into our crossing.When vehicles leave this area, some of them take off along St Michaels Street at a high speed and sometimes in the opposite direction. MES doen werk in die Johannesburg area onder verskeie groepe mense om hul ‘n beter kwaliteit lewe te gee. MES vat hande met Doxa Deo Meyersdal en fondse wat gegenereer word sal ook projekte van Doxa Deo bevoordeel, waar hul verskeie projekte het om individue positief te beinvloed. Dit sluit in: werk onder die jong generasie in die stad, seniors, hulp aan minder bevoorregtes, hulp aan gemeenskappe in Edenpark en vele ander. The decision by the Department of Labour to demand more, and better trained, health and safety officials on construction sites is not just reassuring for casual labourers employed on-site; it also opens up the market for trained officials.The Department of Labour will enforce new and stricter regulations for the construction industry as of 1 May. “This means that the industry will be in need of more employees than ever,” Christopher Guy of Makrosafe said. Makrosafe is the trendsetter in the areas of education, implementation and administration of Health and Safety in South Africa. “For us training providers, this will mean that more emphasis will be placed on the course content and assessment of trainees.” In anticipation of the need for more health and safety practitioners, Makrosafe has started to roll out its new certificate course. The course is

offered nationwide.Providing there is enough interest, Makrosafe will bring the course to that specific location instead of expecting students to travel to a training institution. Last week Guy travelled to Bloemfontein to teach matriculants at a local high school. “It is very exciting to see how kids at high school finally consider pursuing a job in the health and safety profession. But on the same token, it was frightening to hear how many of them knew of people that were injured or even killed in work-related incidents. The focus is often on people killed or injured in crimes or traffic accidents. But the number of people involved in accidents at the workplace exceeds both,” Guy said.According to the Department of Labour, two labourers are killed on construction sites on average, each week. The new regulations are designed to reduce the number of accidents and casualties but also to

formalise the industry. It, certainly, will place more emphasis on health and safety. Makrosafe has, therefore, broken up its course into six different modules. “Health and safety boils down to complying with legislation. But it has a big investigative element. And, of course, there is a focus on responding to and treating injured people. These, and more aspects of the job, are discussed in the course.” The lecture in Bloemfontein last week was, in some way, a real eye-opener for Guy. “The course is supposed to cater for anybody with an interest in health and safety, regardless whether they have previous experience or training, or not. The scholars in Bloemfontein sometimes had completely different views or opinions than what we would have received from adults. Children look totally different at danger or what they perceive to be a workplace,” Guy explained

Making a difference two wheels at a time

Local entrepreneurs Sifu Mark van den Berg, from the Winchester Kung-Fu and Taiji Association, and Gary Arde, from Astro Projects, have collaborated behind an initiative that seeks to assist 90 underprivileged children by providing them with bicycles. Many children in the informal corners of our country are expected to walk long distances

to school. This greatly impacts the child’s ability to get the most out of the education they are afforded. Kids miss out on lessons due to lateness or due to physical exhaustion, resulting from braving not only the long distances but also weather conditions. It was with this type of student in mind that Mark and Gary came up with the idea to find bicycles,

which would make travelling long distances a little easier.Mark and Gary’s efforts are dedicated to assist the 7th Ray Spiritual Centre (SRSC) to source about 90 bicycles by the end of April 2014. These bicycles will then be distributed by SRSC to scholars residing in squatter camps in Krugersdorp. “We are appealing to anyone in possession of bicycles in a usable condition and who are willing to donate for the benefit of a child’s education, to call us so we can arrange to pick up the bicycles,” said Mark. “Any size of cycle will help, from toddlers black push bikes to sizes suitable for matriculants,” added Gary, who also explained that this initiative is only a part of an ongoing drive to assist squatter camp scholars in Krugersdorp.

The last Saturday of every month a group of about fifteen youths from Alberton spend their day with orphans from Chivirikani Primary School near Palm Ridge. Along J29 (an NGO) assists the community to care for orphans. The group offers the orphans lunch and interacts with them through an activity they plan.Saturday 22 February was no different and the group organised a fun day for their friends. Party-packs, handmade bracelets, face painting and loads of fun was the order of the day.tame TIMES was told by a member of the youth group that the kids and the volunteers respond well to their visits and love spending the day together. Sophie also expressed that while they always need help with goodies for the lunch and the items for the activities, such as the beads they use for bracelets, they would also appreciate the hands of more young people. The next outing to Chivirikani is on 29 May and anyone is welcome regardless of their age. ‘Speke en Spore’ is a Christian group of twelve cyclists who are undertaking a tour from Beitbridge (Limpopo) to Veldrift (Cape Province). The tour will commence on 6 March and is expected to end on 28 March. The purpose of the tour is to live up to the commandment of Jesus Christ in Matthew 28:19, which reads: “Go then and make disciples of all nations, baptising them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”The journey to Veldrift will see the cyclists cover approximately 2700km, stopping in towns on their way with the intention to spread the good news of Jesus Christ and distributing Bibles and praying with people. Brackendowns’ Captain Chris Buys is a member of the cycling team and will be joining his teammates, who are expected to arrive in Gauteng on 12 March. Speaking to tame TIMES, Captain Buys explains that the 2014 journey to the Cape is the fourth of its kind since the establishment of Speke en Spore. “This is an inter-denominational initiative; it gives any willing person the opportunity to participate in the spreading of the Gospel and the opportunity to touch lives while exploring new parts of the country,” said Buys.The cyclists will cycle anything between 130-150km per day and sleep over at various missionary groups on their way.Buys explains that, by God’s grace, some of the accommodation along the route is already being sponsored. However, the remaining accommodation must be paid for by the cyclists themselves. There is food and supplements that they also need to buy themselves.

Other than cash donations, the group also need Bibles and relevant reading material. Donations for the group can be organised through Retha Sharp at 083 517 3215.

I am a resident in Randhart. Over the last 2 months I have noticed that our tap water is brown and have an awful smell. This, without a doubt, will cause health risks to my family and all other residents. Your help to escalate this matter is really appreciated. Please do not allow Randhart and Alberton to become a sub-standard town with poor service delivery and absent leadership.

I have spoken to our water quality incumbent and he has requested that anyone who has a problem must please e-mail him the problem and their address so that he may go and get a sample. As ek jou sou vra om die begrip “geloof” te

omskryf, hoe sou jy antwoord? Sou jy net ‘n geestelike omskrywing gee? Sou jy ‘n Christelike omskrywing daarvan gee? Ek besef opnuut dat die begrip geloof op baie manier geïnterpreteer word. Dit word in verskillende scenarios ook anders verstaan, maar ek wil graag vandag saam met Jakobus daarvoor pleit dat, ten spyte van die scenario, geloof nooit omskryf word as ‘n passiewe/stasionêre deug wat deur persone besit word nie.Geloof is per definisie ‘n werkwoord wat altyd beweging tot gevolg het. Geloof is per definisie dan ook die leef in die wêreld met die opdrag van God. Jakobus 2:14 is duidelik daaroor dat geloof wat nie sigbaar word in jou optrede nie, dood is. Ek en jy is burgers van die Koninkryk van God. Ons geloof in ‘n lewende Here maak ons ook draers van Sy genade, Sy liefde, Sy vergifnis en Sy blydskap. Gaan leef jou geloof!

Alberton SPCA had a successful fundraiser at the Valentine’s Day Night Market held at Alberton City recently. The folk at the Alberton branch would like to thank everyone who supported their initiative; they had a great time meeting their supporters as well as encouraging others to support them. “We need to raise funds not only to keep working to prevent cruelty to animals, but also to buy equipment so we can nurture the animals in our care,” said SPCA’s spokesperson, Vanja Ingold. The Alberton SPCA currently needs hard

brooms and scrapers for picking up dog faeces, rain suits for cleaning kennels (large and medium sizes), gum boots (size 8), waders, 30m x 20mm hose pipe, and overalls or two piece overalls (size 36). The SPCA receives no assistance from the government and therefore relies on donations from the public. Anyone who can assist with any of these items can get in touch with the SPCA on 011 907 1568 to make arrangements for the donation.The next function on the Alberton SPCA’s calendar is Peanut’s 2nd Birthday Dog Walk at Dukelinds Dog Park at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. Naderhand word dit al donker en ons is nogsteeds tussen êrens en nêrens. Om alles te kroon kry ons toe ‘n pap wiel ook nog. My tante se man het al ‘n uur terug gery op soek na ons, maar my battery het intussen pap geword en Gysie s’n is weer by die huis vergeet. Ons is toe maar aan genade oorgelaat. Nee kyk, ek was lanklaas so benoud! Rondom ons ou skedonk van ‘n motor sien mens net verlate velde en plotte se liggies daar in die verte. So entjie voor ons, waar die karligte skyn, sien ek ‘n bordjie wat sê De Deur. “Gysie! Klim onmiddelik terug in die kar,” skree ek vir hom. Skielik voel ek ‘n yskoue rilling by my rugraat opkruip en my armhare staan penregop. My ouma het my nog lank gelede vertel van die sogenaamde ‘De Deur spook’. Die storie lui dat daar lank gelede ‘n boer en sy beeldskone dogter op een van die plotte in De Deur gewoon het. Die boer se vrou is lank gelede oorlede en hy was verskriklik geheg aan sy dogter en baie streng. Sy het eendag ‘n jong man in die dorp ontmoet en hy het die oomblik toe hy haar sien dadelik verlief op haar geraak. Hy het elke dag vir haar briewe gepos en kilometers op sy motorfiets afgelê om by haar te kuier. Haar pa het die verhouding nie goedgekeur nie, maar waar daar ‘n wil is, is daar ‘n weg. Die jong man het elke aand skelmpies vir sy nooi gaan kuier en soms het hulle saam uit die huis gesluip vir die aand. Een aand het die pa besluit dat hy die laaste lag sal hê; hy span toe flymskerp doringdraad oor die pad, skouerlengte, en wag vir die kêrel. ‘n Paar minute later kom die jong man met ‘n stinkspoed by die pad afgejaag en hy is onmiddelik onthoof. Baie mense vandag sê dat hulle ver in die donker soms motorfietsliggies sien flikker en verdwyn. Ander beweer dat hulle ‘n huilende jong vrou langs die pad sien loop, maar sodra mens wil stop om haar op te laai, verdwyn sy. Nee kyk, vir spoke het ek nie tyd nie! The suspect drove with the victim towards Thinasonke at an open veld where he raped her. While raping her, the victim saw the Brackendowns Police doing patrols and alerted them. On Tuesday, 11 February a real estate agent locked an empty house in Waldron Street, Florentia and forgot to set the alarm.On Wednesday 12 February the neighbours heard noises coming from the empty house next door and went to investigate. They found two persons, a male and a female, removing the stove from the empty house and placing it on a wheelbarrow. The neighbour immediately phoned the SAPS 10111 emergency number and informed them of the incident.A nearby Crime Task Team vehicle of the Ekurhuleni Metro police was dispatched to the scene of the crime.On arrival at the house in Waldron Street the neighbour informed the officers that the two suspects are pushing the stove in a wheelbarrow towards Alberton Dam.The Metro police drove down Waldron Street and found the two suspects pushing the wheelbarrow and stove. The Metro police arrested the male and female for Housebreaking and Theft, and Possession of Suspected Stolen Property. The two suspects were detained at Alberton SAPS.

Due to the recent spike in school violence and attacks often thought to be linked to satanic rituals, the Department of Community Safety has mandated SAPS and other law enforcement agencies to conduct at least three school searches a month. Brackendowns SAPS has heeded that call and conducted a search at Impact Independent School in the Brackenhurst area.Speaking to tame TIMES, Sgt Moloi expressed that SAPS Brackendowns is fully committed to making sure that schools in their areas remain safe.“We appeal to parents to co-operate with the police, by firstly checking their children’s

bags to make sure no dangerous tools or questionable articles are taken to school. Secondly, from the parent’s side, we need them to understand that we are not on a mission to make criminals of their children; but we are driven by the goal to make schools safe,” said Moloi.“Currently we are struggling with some of the schools refusing school searches. School leaders need to be aware that the Department of Education is part of this campaign and have echoed the concerns of the Department of Community Safety,” Moloi addedSchool searches will be random and will be manned by SAPS officers, CPF, Metro and members of the Youth Desk.

lights out in albertonOn Monday 17 February, at 15:15 in the afternoon, a concerned resident of Alberton North noticed two suspicious males carrying a lamp pole down Sixth Avenue Alberton North. The resident immediately alerted the Fox Security Tactical Team.The Fox Security Tactical Team informed all nearby Fox Security vehicles and the local CPF of Alberton North.In no time the two suspects were spotted with the pole in their possession by the local CPF.Once the suspects realised they were spotted they put the pole down and started running down Fifth Avenue. One of Fox Security’s technical vehicles arrested one of the suspects in Fifth Avenue, the second suspect was arrested by CPI Security officers.Both suspects were positively identified by the CPF member as the two he saw carrying the lamp pole. The lamp pole was removed from Seventh Avenue in Alberton North.Both suspects were arrested for theft and detained at Alberton SAPS.

Alberton delivers major successA Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club hosted the tame TIMES Golden Lions Sevens Rugby tournament. The tournament, which saw 24 senior teams and 20 u/21 teams pitted against each other, took place over three days starting from Friday 28 February and ending on Sunday 2 March. Besides the wet weather, many supporters came out to the club to witness what was later to be declared a major success. The festivities kicked off on Friday evening with entertainment by three live bands at the

Club House’s brand new lapa. So while the weather was cold, the music, friendship and anticipation kept fans warm through the night.Games began bright and early on Saturday. The preliminary stages of the competition ran smoothly with the friendly atmosphere provided by the market stalls, sponsor displays and more live entertainment. Games ended at 17:00 and the party carried on under the lapa. Speaking to tame TIMES, Mark A s s a n t e (Co-owner of the C l u b House) expressed h i s gratitude to all

participants, fans and sponsors who made the event possible.“The weekend was a major success, and I would really love to thank the public for coming out regardless of the weather. An e-mail message did the rounds last week telling registered South African to double check that their voting paper is stamped at the back, otherwise their vote does not count. tame TIMES asked Clr Dennis Jane to clarify the issue. Below is his response:Each party appoints up to two agents whose responsibility it is to monitor IEC official’s activities in the polling station. Once the voter’s status has been verified, they move to the table where the ballot papers are issued. When working correctly, the official should only stamp the back of the ballot paper immediately prior to handing it to the voter. What sometimes happens is that the official will stamp a number of ballot papers and distribute them from the pile of stamped ballot papers. This action should be drawn to the presiding officer’s attention and stopped. In my experience, I cannot recall any missing stamps on ballot papers. Spoilt papers certainly, where there has been no party chosen, all chosen or marks where it was not possible to determine what party had in fact been voted for.When the counting of ballot papers commences only IEC officials are permitted

to handle them. After the ballot boxes are emptied on top of tables, all papers are placed face down. The first scrutiny is: do they have the official mark on the back. If yes, they are set aside. Ballots are placed face up and spoilt papers removed then sorted into party piles. The piles are counted (piles of 10 are created) and tallied. This number, together with spoilt ballots total, must be equal to the ballot papers issued during the day. All the while all the party agents have been observing the process and raising issues or agreeing to IEC officials’ actions.If the numbers do not tally, a recount may be demanded. This may only happen where there is a huge discrepancy between ballots issued and counted, or if the two leading parties’ numbers are so close that say the two missing ballots could swing it either way.All the political parties’ agents should be happy with the results and accept that there are two missing ballots (sometimes voters pocket the paper and forfeit their vote). All agents are required to sign a declaration that they are happy with the outcome at their polling station.

But although this is being planned, a growing number of university entrants are unable to cope with the demand of tertiary study thanks to the inferior education they receive at public schools.The bottom-line is that Mr Zuma’s story in nowhere as good as he claims.

tame TIMES JHB South Editor Laurelle Williams and Senior Sales Executive Loreen Fletcher experienced one of the most amazing and relaxing outdoor activities recently – horse riding at the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Horse Trails.Samantha Derham has recently taken over the horse trails and delights riders with her vast knowledge of the Klipriviersberg Nature Area and its rich history. She is a responsible and cheerful trail leader with a lifetime of riding experience.The trail is just over an hour, where two streams are crossed on a trail with uphills and downhills. A group of seven riders can ride at once with Derham leading. Derham rides at a pace to accommodate all riders, even the most inexperienced riders.While riding through God’s beautiful gift to us, nature, on one of God’s most exquisite creatures, the horse, the stress of the week just dissipates into the open air and a new appreciation for life is born.Joseph Ndlovu, who stays in the reserve and takes care of the horses, is on hand for the first stretch on the trail and also has vast knowledge on all animals in the reserve. He pointed out that a zebra foal was born that morning and tame TIMES was lucky enough to see the little zebra running around. Wildebeest and buck were also spotted.This is a must for all residents, not only those residing in the South but from all over. It is a breath-taking experience.

Tieghan announced as new figues internOn Saturday, 15 February, the Alberton branch of Figures Modelling Agency held their annual Valentine’s social event at The Glen shopping centre. There was much excitement among the girls and boys as to what to wear and how the show would go. Ten-year-old Tieghan was clearly just as excited in her white and red outfit as she took to the ramp with two other girls. Tieghan also danced with the dance group and enjoyed herself thoroughly. At the end of the show, the much anticipated Intern announcement was made and Tieghan was elected as the Intern for the Alberton branch of the Figures Modelling Agency. This endorsement means she gets to be a role model for the agency and will assist with agency-related campaigns and the recruiting of new students. “We are so very proud of her, this was truly a huge surprise and a great honour as Tieghan has only been modelling since November last year. We have seen her grow in confidence and her self-esteem is now very healthy,” said Tieghan’s mother, Emma Griffin-Coetzer.Tieghan’s job over the next couple of months is to help get children of all ages to join the modelling agency. That’s not all however, she could win a sponsored trip to New York in July for all her hard work.

Local ladies design alongside Gert-Johan Coetzee

South African designer sensation, Gert-Johan Coetzee recently started a new label for women called Vintage Closet. Coetzee’s inspiration behind the label were two of his clients, Lorraine and Tiffany Sutherland, from Alberton, who are proud business partners and co-designers of Vintage Closet.Lorraine Sutherland, an image, etiquette, communications and leadership consultant, has always been passionate about fashion and teaching women how to be confident and elegant. She runs her own modern day finishing school and it was during her wardrobe courses that she identified the demand for elegant, versatile and affordable clothes. “As I started working with corporate companies and women in general, especially when it came down to wardrobe planning, we realised that there is not much of a selection in local clothing stores to cater for

women ranging from the age of 30-55 or 60. Especially if you still want to stay in fashion with style,” Lorraine explained.Lorraine and her daughter knew Coetzee quite well, as he had designed a number of outfits and gowns for numerous functions of theirs, including Tiffany’s wedding. They knew that it would be difficult to launch an entirely new clothing label on their own, and decided to take a chance and approached Coetzee. “Gert-Johan has always hit the mark with our vision when presenting the finished item and it seemed like the perfect fit to approach him for our VC venture,” Lorraine said. Coetzee agreed and Vintage Closet’s first range was released last year September. Their first clothing range was a giant success and sold out completely. They are currently working on their winter range and they are very excited about it. “It’s all about understanding your body shape, having a colour analysis and having the know-how to choose your garment. We have sat with Gert-

Johan and brought the general weaknesses of what women have regarding their bodies and shapes and we truly design around those areas. Every woman wants to wear a designer label and we ensured it can serve more than one purpose: from the office, to the boardroom, to the cocktail dinner,” Lorraine says. Vintage Closet clothing can be described as ready-to-wear clothes that is always in season and versatile. The designs are a unique mix of vintage and modern with a fresh, classic, stylish and elegant flair. The colours and cuts are not too rigid and can easily be mixed and matched with other items in your closet. The Johannesburg Harriers Athletic Club( JHAC) will be hosting its 68th Jackie Gibson Marathon and second Allan Ferguson Half-Marathon on Sunday 30 March. The 2014 race will start at 06:00 and finish at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. The course will meander through the suburb of Liefde en Vrede and head towards Aspen Estate Nature Reserve. From here runners will head south onto Kliprivier Road and turn right into Swartkoppies Road for a few kilometres. The route turns right into Peggy Vera Road, past Thaba Ya Batswana and the Rand Water Board head office and right onto Klipriver Road. The route passes the Panorama Shopping Centre and onto the bridge at Aspen Estate. Runners then head back through Liefde en Vrede and finish at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. The marathon route repeats this new and exciting course for a second lap, which includes a part of Gordon Road in Kibler Park and back into Impala Road. The Visarend Angling Club held their annual awards evening on Saturday 22 February. The awards evening was held at the Verwoerdpark NG Church. Smartly dressed club members and their families arrived at the church with an air of anticipation, each hoping to receive recognition for the previous year’s fishing program. The Club’s Chairperson, Jurrie Nel, opened the evening by welcoming all members and their families and acknowledging all members for their contributions that result in a successful club.“A strong club and a strong management team cannot exist without strong members,” said Jurrie before handing over to the club’s records official, Warren Cheek, for the presentation of the awards.

Many awards were presented in different categories, but the most notable were awards received by Megan Viljoen (4), the club’s youngest member. Social barriers bowled outAlberton Cricket Club Juniors hosted Golden Bells Cricket Club at their inaugural u/11 Tournament. All the boys there enjoyed the day, but none more so than the 11 boys from Golden Bells.During 2013, parents of the Alberton Cricket Club were encouraged to bring in cricket equipment that they no longer used. Like in many sports, boys outgrow their equipment and often the equipment seems hardly used when, much to the frustration of the parents, new equipment has to be purchased.Parents took the call to heart, became involved and brought in many pieces of equipment during the year. Ultimately six bags full of equipment were collected from our parents. More equipment, in the form of 11 abdominal protectors, was donated by Bradman’s Cricket Shop. Coach Harry Boyle from Alberton Cricket Club identified Golden Bells Cricket Club as a possible recipient of the donated equipment, after playing a fixture against them and noticing that the boys exchanged bats, helmets and leg pads before coming in to bat. It seemed that the team barely had enough to play the game safely.Once the kit was handed over, coach Jackie from Golden Bells said it was fitting that the Golden Bells team played

their first match in their new protective equipment and their new bats against Alberton Cricket Club. Much to their surprise, the Golden Bells boys were not tasked to play against the Alberton boys but with them. The teams were shuffled to allow the boys to play together, learning from each other and breaking down societal barriers.Members of the public and schools are urged to donate used equipment to the club, so that their initiative can continue to bring smiles to less fortunate lovers of the cricket game. I have had the honour of playing with and against some of the best cricketers in the world during my career as a cricket professional, and I could give you a number of players’ names that would challenge the current crop of players. The likes of Clive Rice, Graeme Pollock, Sylvester Clarke and Jimmy Cook from the then “Mean Machine”, to name but a few, as well as the Chappell brother’s, Alan Border, Jeff Thompson, Dennis Lillee and Shane Warne from Australia. Today you have Graeme Smith, AB De Villiers, JP Duminy, Morné Morkel and Dale Steyn, as well as David Warner, Michael Clark, Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson. Is it fair for me to compare these great players, whom are pretty much thirty years apart? Why not, as the basics of the game have not changed. The only thing you need to consider is that the only difference is that there is so much more money in the game now than the mid-eighties. Money aside, I would arguably say that the ex-Aussie skipper, and now commentator, Alan Border and his fellow players would agree with me in saying that his fellow teammates, as well as Pollock and co, would certainly have stood up to the challenge of the modern game. The old saying of “You can’t buy experience in the supermarket” is so true. Been there, done that and worn the T-Shirt. In an ideal world, I would love to have seen Graeme Pollock smash Mitchell Johnson all over the park and park Warne in the stands.

The old vs the new

The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) senior sevens rugby team were crowned the ultimate winners of the tame TIMES Golden Lions Sevens Rugby Tournament. The tournament took place over three days, which culminated on Sunday 2 March with a final match between UJ and Randfontein. The wet weather made playing conditions quite difficult throughout the two days of the tournament, but this in no way took away from the quality displayed by the players on the field. A lot of ankle injuries were recorded; however the dedication from the medics and emergency services limited the seriousness of the injuries. Fans were definitely rewarded for braving the weather.

The UJ team, captained by Morné Laubsher, provided a high level of sportsmanship, approaching all their games as a final, much to the excitement of hundreds if coffee hugging fans.
