Dear ALAC Member,

As most of us continue to swelter through the summer hoping for cooler temperatures, I wish each of you an upcoming happy Labor Day holiday!

I hope that you and your family are safe and well.

We continue to make progress toward our National Specialty week events and look forward to the fall th ndfoliage in Massachusetts this October 18 -22 . Remember it's not too early to make your reservations at

the Boxboro Regency Hotel & Conference Center. The hotel's number is (978) 263-8701.

This should be a beautiful time of the year & there are many local attractions within a few minutes of the hotel, of which you can take advantage. A couple of them are the Nashoba Valley Winery and the Old North Bridge and Minuteman National Historical Park.

As all of us are aware, the COVID virus is raging across the Country. This is especially true of the Delta variant which carries up to 1,000 times the virus load of the original COVID and is highly contagious, nearly twice as contagious as previous variants. It also may cause more severe illness than previous strains in unvaccinated persons. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states “Given what we know about the Delta variant, vaccine effectiveness, and current vaccine coverage, layered prevention strategies, such as wearing masks, are needed to reduce the transmission of this variant.”

I urge each of our members who is not vaccinated to please get vaccinated and follow the then current guidance to protect not only yourself but others who may be more vulnerable.

As the days progress, state and local guidance regarding COVID may change in the area of our National Specialty. Shown at the end of this message is information from the Boxboro Regency's current website regarding COVID. Please note that this guidance and recommended practices may become more/less restrictive as we move toward this Fall.

NORTHWINDCindy Butsic

My husband served in the Military in the early 70's, and was stationed in Germany. Traveling around Europe I became interested in purebred Dogs.

When we returned to the US, I acquired my first Purebred Lhasa. Who turned out to be a Lhasa/Poodle mix. Not knowing she was a mix, I trained her in obedience. Entered my first show in Marquette MI. I knew nothing about showing, so sent the entries to the venue box office!!

There was only one show each year in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. My Obedience instructor organized a demonstration group. We went into schools etc. This helped to keep me interested. We later relocated to lower MI where I attended the Detroit Kennel Club Benched show in Obedience. It was there that I saw 89 Lhasas benched. Stunning sight! I was instantly hooked.

Imagine the “response” of the Breeders as I proudly walked my curly coated mixed breed through the Benching Area! I didn't get far before I recoiled in horror & picked her up! Those were the days of Winnie Gray and Shirley Scott. When the Breeders caught sight of my curly coated mix, they demanded to know how we got into the show. They thought I was out walking my dog and somehow got into show building. I was heartbroken. She was AKC registered, so I reported the breeder to AKC. her registration was revoked and I got an ILP number.

I continued showing in obedience, but remained determined to have a show Lhasa. I could not have dreamed that one day I would breed, own and handle Hope to BIS at the Detroit Kennel Club, under Harry Smith. She would become the Top Winning Lhasa of all time! Twenty years later her show record remains and she is the Dam of 9 Champion offspring.

Geographical location had a lot to do with my kennel name. When the dogs stand outside on the deck, they always face the West. Wind in their hair reminds me of their Tibetan Heritage. That is how they became Northwind Lhasas.
