With their meticulous record-keeping of heliacal ris-

ings, eclipses and the path of the planets through the

constellations, the peoples of ancient Mesopotamia laid the

foundations for all of the Western and Vedic astrology thatfollowed. Their actual, immediate observation of celestial

happenings makes a refreshing and instructive complement

to our more abstract approach today.

Now, after years of study, Rumen Kolev has released his

Babylonia computer program to help you understand and do

research on the practice of the Babylonian astrologers.

Simulating Direct Observation

The opening screen ofBabylonia 1.5 shows a unique view

of the sky as an observer would see it at a given time from a

Also included are tables showing the rise and set times of the

Sun and planets, their azimuth of rise and set, and the bright

Computing Heliacal Phases

One of the most important parts of Babylonian astrology

was obseatio of eliacal isigs (te st appeaace of a

celestial body after its conjunction with the Sun) and helia-

cal settings (the bodys last appearance before its conjunc-

tion with the Sun).

Accurate computation of the dates of heliacal risings andsettings depends on many factors, including the brightness

of the body, its declination, and the latitude of the observer

In computing the theoretical heliacal phases of planets, the

author uses Schochs Oxford tables for the arcus visionis of

the planets, and Jean Meeus astronomical algorithms.

So that you can track the lunar and planetary phases as the

Babylonian observers did,Babylonia 1.5 shows all the phas-

es. There are circular diagrams of a given bodys phases like

the ones shown on the next page. Theres also a very use-

ful Babylonian Planets Calendar table that inter-sorts the

Babylonias unique sky view helps you see how the planets and

stars relate to the local horizon and meridian when seen from a par-

ticular spot on earth. It also shows how far each body is north or
