Holly has a vision for her place at Langs Marina year round, deliciousdinners, reasonably priced. The dinner specials will be varied but all sharethe good home cooking theme. While Holly might yet change her mindabout the name of the place, solid home fare will be served.

Holly was born and raised in Nelson. She has spent her whole life in therestaurant industry. She initially moved to Whistler where she worked inrestaurant and hotel supply, and then managed a Mexican restaurant for fouryears. After ten years away, she moved back to the Kootenays, back home.

In Nelson, she began with a deli lunch truck, her Got Lunch? truck wasa familiar sight. She also worked with Reg at McQs for many years, includ-ing event planning, catering, and eventually managing the kitchen.

Her life in the Kootenays includes her horses, dogs, catsand she ispassionate about golf. The opportunity at the landmark Langs locationwas a perfect t for Holly. The kitchen is ready to go, and the place is well-known. Holly couldnt resist the challenge and knows how lucky she is toenjoy incredible support from her husband Bob and daughter Natalie.

Stop in for a classic or light breakfast, a casual lunch, or a dinner special.Maybe itll be a Mexican dish, maybe perogies and sausage, maybe ribsand lasagna. Youll feel right at home.

Backwoods Solar has been workingwith off-grid customers from all overthe world for 36 years. Their strong teamof technical sales people have a unique

philosophy of selling what they believein because they use the same products in

their own homes. The story of Backwoods Solar in the

Kootenays started when Bob Wattersmade a call one day to Backwoods Solar, looking for materials for his own system.Owner, Sequoya Cross answered the

phone by chance and a relationship was born. Sequoya was quickly convincedthat there was a real need in the localarea for alternative resources to generate

power. Together, they worked to reduceimport costs and provide local technicalhelp and affordable technologies, like

    blemished (blems) panels.

Bob moved to the Kootenay Lakearea in 2009. He brought his interestin alternative energy with him. Hestarted by teaching a few workshopsand assisting others with their instal-lations. Within a year, there were adozen systems operating on and offgrid, backup, and stand-alone allfrom Bob and Backwoods Solar.

In the fall of 2013, Cheryl Sinclairand her husband, who had heard

about the Solar Guru of LardeauValley were intrigued. With Bobshelp they installed a solar systemthat they purchased from Back-woods Solar. Currently, they see a$46 credit every two months insteadof an electric bill.

In 2014, Sequoya was invited to visitall of the systems that Bob had a hand in,and quickly fell in love with the area andthe people herself. She was so impressed

with Cheryl and Bobs passion to spreadthe word of renewable energy that sheinvited Cheryl to work with Backwoods

Solar in the Kootenays. Cheryl Sinclairhas been working as a representative ofBackwoods Solar now for over a year.

What started as a part time job forCheryl quickly grew to full time; eachweek is busier than the last helping lo-cals to become energy independent. Shecouldnt be happier to help see this vi-sion come to life!

Hi, my name is Jewel Endicott. My love of quilting stems frommy love of working with colours when painting that is whatinspires me to instill art into my quilts. What others see andwhat they will put into their creations fascinates me, too; notone quilt is the same, not one person sees or interprets coloursor patterns the same way. This is my passion to build up mystock of fabrics, in different colours and patterns, so that my

customers may blend them, with the result being an originaland unique creation.I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone

to Stitch n Beach Fabric Quilting Shop located on the EastShore of beautiful Kootenay Lake, just above the ferry landing.I would like to strive to have Stitch n Beach bring a avourto the community, to have a place where quilters and sewerscan hang out for a bit, join quilting classes, talk ideas, pass ontechniques that they have learned through their years of quilt-ing. To bring those beginners in to learn quilting, or just to stopby for a coffee or tea, bringing their sewing machine so theyhave a place they can come to and create. Quilters are artisansand in 2015 Stitch n Beach will host a quilting show. Throughthe quilts, all will see what talent lives in our area .

The family owned and operated Kaslo Sour-dough Bakery has been baking a wide varietyof sourdough breads for the West Kootenay areasince 1993. In 2011 Silvio and Gabi, with theirthree kids Stefan, Heike and Heidi, expandedtheir business by inventing the worlds rst sour-dough pasta which uses their exclusive in-housenatural sourdough bacterial culture. Silvios pas-sion over the past 24 years of working with natu-

ral sourdough led to the creative breakthroughthey call Pasta Fermentata.Together with their employees Emma and

Martin, the Lettraris now produce twelve differ-ent kinds of sourdough pasta. Each variety has atremendous individual avour prole, but all de-liver the benets of the natural fermentation pro-cess by which theyre made. After many years ofresearch, the Lettraris know that natural fermen-

tation is essential for a number of health advan-

tages, including gluten degradation for enhanceddigestibility and better nutrient absorption.

You may also notice their new driver Hugh, delivering both bread and pasta across the WestKootenays. The Kaslo Sourdough team is proudto provide the best quality products in local gro-cery/health food stores.

I grew up in Kaslo, and graduated in 2005. Sincethen, I have lived here on and off, leaving some seasonsto work and coming back to be part of community proj-ects. I keep coming back.

I moved to Victoria in 2010 to start my exterior homecleaning company. I enjoyed this occupation for theinterpersonal connection with clients who all soon be-came friends, sharing conversation and often times cof-fee or tea and lunch. Victoria offered the opportunityfor me to join in many positive initiatives. I learned alot from these. However, Id always visit Kaslo and itwould be harder to leave each time.

Now, after four years away, I have returned home tofamily and so many friends, to launch Kaslo Windowand Gutter Cleaning. My vision for this business is thatI am able to help my neighbours with a great service, and that it will allow me to live in this gorgeous areaand pursue my interests in community building.

Kiara grew up in Kaslo and Nelson, graduatedfrom LVR, and then went to the Kootenay School ofthe Arts for a year before going to Concordia Univer-sity in Montreal. Kiara has lived in Montreal, Spain,Ireland, and Cuba. When it came time to start a fam-ily, she moved back to the Kootenays, because thisis just the best place in the world to raise a family.

Growing up here, I completely identify withpeople here, with the choices people are making, andwith the values.

Prior to working in real estate, Kiara worked inthe nonprot world, most recently as curator for theLangham. I really identify with my teammates at theLive in the Koots Team and I love our mandate wherewe give back part of our personal commissions tosupport nonprots in the community.

WebsitesLong, long ago in the small village

of Kaslo, I began publishing Pennywisefrom my kitchen table. Wow, what a tripit has been!

In 1975 I had a typewriter, some lay-out sheets and the rm desire to live andwork here in Kaslo. At rst it was a verysmall paper just for the immediate area.Slowly it expanded from Kaslo to Nelson,Slocan Valley, Castlegar, Trail, Rossland,

Salmo, East Shoreand everywhere inbetween. Early on Ihad the good fortuneto have Judy Hawes and Peter Williams(both 31 years now) and Karma Halleran(26 years) join me. Now we have a totalof 17 talented members on the Pennywiseteam, of which each one plays an impor-tant part.

By embracing new technolo-gies, we have embarked uponvery exciting times. Karma haslong espoused that the core eco-nomic drivers of our area aresmall businesses. Some busi-nesses, after seeing how theworld, and more importantlytheir competitors use the internet, realize they dont know where to

start and worry that they will beleft behind. The buying habits ofshoppers are evolving.

Karma has taken this issue toheart and now manages our web/internet division. I want suc-cess for these small businessesin this huge service-driven econ-omy! There is no reason whythey shouldnt have a website

just like their competitors. Sure, the big

guys have bigger budgets, but that is thebeauty of Pennywise we can serve anybudget. Technology is our friend, and willbe theirs as well, says Karma. We cantrain the business owner to maintain thesite, or we can do it for them. Whateverthey decide they want, they know theycan depend on us to provide and supportany service we offer.

    From mykitchen table, toKarmas dream

of web combi-nations, we areworking hard tokeep local busi-nesses vibrant. The next chapterat Pennywise hasonly just begun!
