No One is Too High to Serve

Jim Heskett of Harvard Business School writes that in 2013 he attended a board meeting at ServiceMaster, a major corpo-

ration that sells cleaning materials and services. Heskett recalls that ServiceMaster CEO William Pollard, spilled a cup of coffee prior to the start of the board meeting. Pollard “asked a colleague to get him cleaning compound and a cloth, things easily found in a company that provided cleaning services. Whereupon he proceeded to get down on his hands and knees to clean up the spill himself. The remarkable thing was that board members and employees alike hardly noticed as he did it. It was as if it was expected in a company with self-proclaimed servant leadership.”

Fact is, the inclination to serve seems all too rare, especially among those in power. It seems so rare that when it happens—as when the pope washed and kissed the feet of 12 men and women in a Rome prison housing many hard-ened criminals, rather than the feet of priests and bishops on Holy Thursday—the moment is broadcast around the world. But the pope’s purpose was not to draw attention to his own humility, but to issue an invitation: “Go and do likewise.” Fr. Rey

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK First Reading: Isaiah speaks of our redemption through the suffering of the Lord’s servant. When have you experienced God’s presence in your suffering? Second Reading:

Hebrews tells us that Jesus is able to sympathize with our weaknesses because he, too, “has been tested in every way.” What are some ways that you are tested in life? Gospel: Jesus uses the request of James and John as a teachable moment for his disciples on the importance of humility and service to others. What other qualities do you think are necessary for true discipleship? ©LPi

Respect Life Month si'

Consider parents holding their first new-born son or daughter. While there is no instruction manual for all the possible cir-cumstances they may encounter, their guid-

ing framework is the loving, parental relationship with their child. With his encyclical Laudato si’, Pope Francis invites us to understand more deeply our relationships with God, one another, and the rest of creation, and to live according-ly. “Everything is connected,” he reminds us. (LS 91).

If we are filled with the love of God, a culture of encounter and solidarity will begin to bloom. Pope Francis stresses, “We are speaking of an attitude of the heart, one which approaches life with serene attentiveness, which is capable of being fully present to someone without thinking of what comes next” (LS 226). With this attitude of heart, we neither treat humans as disposable, nor neglect to care for God’s creation at any level. Through conversion of heart, repairing our relationships with God, one another, and all of creation, we combat the many pollutants that poison our hearts and our world. The students explored how they could make a difference following the encyclical of Pope Francis’ Laudato si’.

Renewing Catholic Family Life Webinar Series

Dr. Gregory and Lisa Popcak of the Peyton Institute for Domestic Church are exploring a new, dynamic model of family spirituality and family ministry called the Liturgy of Domestic Church Life. The Renew-

ing Catholic Family Webinar Series is intended to as-sist pastors, educators, and family life ministers in help-ing families experience their Catholic faith more mean-ingfully at home and to pass on the faith more successful-ly to the next generation. Their five-week series is open to diocesan and parish leaders, family life ministers, cler-gy, educators, and anyone involved in ministry that touches family life. The webinars take place on five con-secutive Fridays from October 22 to November 19 at 8:30am. To register and learn more, please visit https://www.peytonfamilyinstitute.org/upcoming-events.

This October, Seek Our Lady’s Intercession Last May, during the month dedicated to the Blessed Vir-gin Mary, Pope Francis invit-ed the faithful to participate in a “Rosary marathon” to

pray for the end of COVID-19 pandemic.

On May 1, from St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Pope Fran-cis said, “We join together in prayer with all the sanctuar-ies spread throughout the whole world, with the faithful, and with all persons of goodwill, to entrust into the hands of our Holy Mother the whole human race, sorely tried by this period of pandemic.”

As we enter October, the month dedicated to the Rosary, we encourage the faithful to once again pick up their ro-saries and pray to our Lady for an end to the pandemic and for her to wrap the world in her mantle. “All of us turn to our moms when we are struggling or facing a challenge,” said Pope Francis, who asked us to pray the following prayer at the end of the Rosary:

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain and steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide , so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Fa-thers will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of Resurrection. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas—we who are put to the test—and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.” Amen. —Our Sunday Visitor

Join us each Tuesday at 5:20pm in the Church

before the 6pm Mass to pray the Rosary. Everyone is welcome! Bring a friend.

WE NEED YOU! Whether you are inter-ested in becoming a Sacristan, Lector, an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Com-munion, serving as an altar server, or sing-ing in the choir, it takes all of us to make St. Didacus the thriving community that we know and love. So, this fall, make it a priority to reach out to our parish staff to let us know about your interests.
