109 A blaze broke out on board the ship just some 30 minutes into the voyage loosing radar contact 62 miles north of Duba, the ship contained around 1350 people including crew. Passengers were forced to evacuate as the ship lined moving the center of gravity to one side. The ferry continuing to stay afloat for two hours until overcome by intake of water and sank with still 1000 plus people on board. The investigation to the event found the ferry failed to meet minimum safety standards and that the agency responsible for maritime safety allowed it to sail despite being aware of its state, it is also reported that the ferry did not have sufficient emergency life boats. The weather conditions were bad and it was dark as the ship continued to move through the water to Safaga, their destination only 3 hours away therefore neither the captain nor the passengers realized the extent of danger. The ship was rolling gently and gradually taking in seawater until it rolled completely turning over. Witness accounts commented upon lack of coordination during evacuation, failure to hear the emergency evacuation sound and rescue attempts was initiated too late.
