Khamis Juma Buamim Chairman of Drydocks World & Maritime World

Drydocks World & Maritime World continues to build on its successful strategy of taking on a leadership role in providing value addition to the oshore sector. We have taken heed of the fact that there has been a surge in recent demand for higher specication jack-ups for operation in deepwater and there has been additional growth in areas such as those adjoining the United Kingdom and Norway.

Our agreement with Drill One Capital to build a mega jack-up rig to operate in harsh environments in the Norwegian Sector is an indication of things to come. We hope to support this sector judiciously with needs-based state-of-the-art drilling rigs. We will simultaneously highlight the signicant growth prospects of the oil & gas and energy sectors in addition to the maritime sector at the First Mare Forum – Global Leaders Maritime Summit. The Summit will bring into focus Dubai’s role in the development of the maritime, oil & gas and energy scenario in the region.

Meanwhile, our mission to make meaningful contributions to the development of the industry will also be complemented by imparting appropriate education and training. The rst ever GCC Marine & Oshore HR Summit in Dubai organised by EIMA and AIMRI highlighted the need to enhance the Maritime Human Resource Concepts & Strategy for the future.

Drydocks World signed an Agreement with Drill One Capital for building the ‘Dubai Expo 2020 NS’ mega Jack-up rig. Gusto MSC, which is one of the major partners in this project, has designed the CJ 80 rig. The rig will be the rst of this design and the largest Jack-up rig ever built. Designed to be operated in harsh environments including the Norwegian Sector of the North Sea at a maximum water-depth of 175 meter with 25 meter air-gap, the rig is another ground-breaking project among the growing portfolio of new build projects for the oshore oil & gas being implemented by Drydocks World. The 101 X 110 m, 5500 sqm unit will be classed by DNV and will meet all rules and regulations in force in the Norwegian and the UK sector of the North Sea. It can be operational at a depth of 175 m in standalone mode. The rig is totally environmentally friendly – has up to 30% less fuel consumption due to use of latest fuel ecient technology; is tier 3 compliant; generates fresh water using waste heat from engine cooling; heat by hot water generated from exhaust waste heat; uses LED lighting where possible; has reduced emission of CO2 and NOx - up to 25% reduction in emission compared to similar rigs; is prepared for shore power; will have zero discharge to sea to meet Norwegian and UK legal requirements (uids less than 15 ppm contamination).

The design draft is 8.5 m, minimum operational water depth is 20 m and length of legs is 232 m. It is designed to accommodate a total of 160 persons when the unit is used as a drilling and production unit. The rig will be equipped with the latest available state-of-the-art drilling equipment to be able to drill to 40.000 ft drilling depth. The rig will be equipped with a total of four high pressure (7000 psi) mud pumps.

His Excellency Khamis Juma Buamim, Chairman of Drydocks World & Maritime World in a recent interview published in one of the leading dailies indicated that Jadaf Dubai will be protected even as the shifting of companies from the shipyard to Dubai Maritime City is partially completed. He highlighted that there will not be any arbitrary decision against the owners of the workshops and warehouses in the area.

His Excellency Buamim highlighted the importance of Jadaf in the regional trade, and as an active and key player in the economy of Dubai and acknowledged its key role in networking with other countries in the region, Iran, India and the coast of Africa, pointing out that a holistic approach should be adopted, and that the decision-makers should be more understanding and assertive in managing the shipyard and ensuring continued and sustained business for the shipyard.

Furthermore, he added that the survival of Jadaf and other nearby areas is more important than ever, because of increased marine transport and enhanced tourism activities in the area. He added that the shipyard is the ideal repair and maintenance destination for wooden boats, contributing signicantly to trade and commerce with adjoining areas.

The 1st Mare Forum Dubai Global Leaders Maritime Summit has garnered worldwide attention. The Summit to be held on February 25th 2014 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai & Chairman of the Executive Oce has been organized by Drydocks World & Maritime World in partnership with Mare Forum. The event to be held at Madinat Jumeriah has generated overwhelming interest & participation from both the regional and international marine, maritime and shipping sectors. This professional forum will bring together policy makers and chief executives of industry in a decisive dialogue and debate, where business strategy and policy-making for today and tomorrow’s issues can be realized with optimal results. As top international business leaders will be in Dubai to formulate The Big Picture for the Marine, Maritime and oshore industry. The event has also drawn interest from many sponsors & these include Dubai Maritime City, The Dubai Council for Marine & Maritime Industries, Emirates Classication - Tasneef, RINA Group- Italy, Al Ghurair Resources, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the Marshall Islands Registry, Lloyd’s Register, GMS Leadership, Robban Assana Magazine and Ship to Shore and many more.

The Summit will focus on topics relating to global geopolitical considerations today and in the future and examine the world economy, its energy and resource needs and challenges, trade patterns and how this will impact on the maritime industry. Year 2013 turned out to be well-balanced for global energy markets. Demand has risen from Asian markets and competition from unconventional hydrocarbon production has increased and this represents shifts in the established global energy order. Besides, demand due to increased population and economic growth and ensuing power requirements has placed heavy emphasis on the use of alternative and renewable energy sources to attain sustainable development.

Industry experts expect global energy consumption to rise by 41 percent from 2012 to 2035. That’s an annual growth rate of 1.5 percent. Most of that increase will come from the emerging economies while energy use in the advanced countries will increase, mainly because of new eciencies. Oil, natural gas and coal will each comprise about 27 percent of the energy mix with the rest coming from nuclear, hydroelectricity and renewable sources. Natural gas consumption is expected to increase at 1.9 percent a year. The role of gas in an expanding energy market, opportunities that the oshore industry can provide to the shipping industry, the challenges and upsides for oil and gas exploration & production and the basics for growth in the LNG market will be discussed.

The VLCC xture activity is also seen to be picking up gradually giving a positive outlook for the future. Market issues on how shipping can be protable in a changed market economy, future shipping trends, the creation of a protable and sustainable shipping industry and trends in shipping rates will be discussed. Oshore perspectives including the economic viability of environmentally friendly vessels and the dynamics in relation to China will be debated.

The economic issues relating to such investments, the advantages and disadvantages of such technology, the role of LNG in the future, ballast water management are other topics that would be discussed. The future of the Dubai Maritime Cluster in the light of Dubai dynamics of today and the future for the next 10 to 20 years and beyond will be discussed. The strategies and goals for this sector including topics relating to logistics, taxes, shipbuilding, shipping law, ports and terminals and attendant service industries will also be covered.
