The Research

Page 4: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

The meaning of research (1):

In the broadest sense of the word, the definition of research includes any gathering of

data, information and facts for the advancement of knowledge.

Page 5: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

The meaning of research (2):

Creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of

knowledge, including knowledge of man, culture and society, and the use of this stock of

knowledge to devise new applications.

The meaning of research (3):

Research is a process of steps used to collect and analyze information to increase our understanding of a topic or issue". It consists of three steps:

1) Pose a question,

2) Collect data to answer the question, and

3) Present an answer to the question.

Page 7: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

Aims of research

1) Discover

2) Observe and describe

3) Predict

4) Causes determination

5) Explain

Page 8: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

Main Research steps:1) Identification of research problem.

2) Literature review.

3) Specifying the purpose of research.

4) Determine specific research questions.

5) Specification of a Conceptual framework - Usually a set of hypotheses.

6) Choice of a methodology (for data collection).

7) Data collection.

8) Analyzing and interpreting the data.

9) Reporting and evaluating research.

10) Communicating the research findings and recommendations.

Forms of research:

1) Scientific research

2) Humanities research

3) Social research

4) Artistic research

Page 10: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

Types of Scientific research:1) Quantitative vs. Qualitative

2) Descriptive / Exploratory (What is this?)

3) Explanatory (Why is this happening?)

4) Predictive

5) Basic (Inventions)

6) Applied (Solution to a problem)

Page 11: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

Scientific Research Characteristics:1) Includes New facts or information.

2) Includes a question or a problem that need an answer or a solution.

3) Achieves general objective rather than a personal objective.

4) Ethical

5) Results should be liable to testing and generalization.

Writing a Scientific Research Proposal:1) Title

2) Introduction

3) Abstract / Summary of the scientific research.

4) Review literature (Previous researches; you and others).

5) Outline the project.

6) Methodology (Data needs, Analytical techniques, Plan for interpreting results).

7) Expected results.

8) Budget (if requesting a fund)

9) Bibliography (references)

Introduction to Project Management:1) What is Project ?

2) What is Programme ?

3) What is a Portfolio ?

4) The Project Triangle

5) The Project Stages and Cycle

Page 16: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

What is a project ?

A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service.

Page 17: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

Project characteristics:

1) Has a start and an end

2) Unique

3) Temporary

Page 18: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

What is a Programme ?

A group of related projects managed in a coordinated way to obtain benefits and control not available from

managing them individually.

Page 19: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

What is a Portfolio ?

refers to an organization's group of programmes or projects and the process in which they are strategically selected and managed to advance the organizational

goals.

Intellectual Property Rights:1) What is IPR?

2) Why IPR?

3) Copyrights

4) Industrial Property1) Patents 2) Industrial Designs3) Utility Model Certificate (UMC)4) Trademarks5) Geographic location of source

What is IPR ?:

• IPR are the rights given to persons over the creations of their minds.

• They give the creator an exclusive right over the use of a creation for a certain period of time.

Page 25: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

Why IPR ?:

The reasoning for intellectual property is to encourage innovation without the fear that a

competitor will take the idea.

Copyrights

•A copyright is a right conferred on the owner of a literary or artistic work. It is an exclusive right to control the publication, distribution and adaptation of creative works.

• Two types: Moral - Economical

Page 27: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

Patents

•Period of patents is 20 years.

•Gives permission to inventor to prohibit another person from selling or using the patented product without permission.

Page 28: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

Conditions of patentability

• Industrial Applicability

•Novelty

• Inventive step

•Patentable subject matter

Page 29: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

Industrial Designs

•An industrial design is the ornamental or aesthetic aspect of an article.

• The design may consist of three-dimensional features, such as the shape or surface of an article, or of two-dimensional features, such as patterns, lines or color.

•10 years can be extended to 5 years.

Page 30: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

Utility Model

•Utility Model protects industrial innovations of less importance than those that are the subject of a patent.

•Valid for 7 years (according to the country).

Page 31: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

Trademarks

• Trademark is a brand name.

•A trademark or service mark includes any word, name, symbol, device, or any combination, used or intended to be used to identify and distinguish the goods and services of one seller or provider from those of others, and to indicate the source of the goods/services.

•Valid for 10 years.

Page 32: Al-Academia || Research, Projects, and IPR.

Geographic Indication of Source

•A geographical indication is a sign used on goods that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that place of origin.

• Such as Roquefort cheese and Bohemia Crystal.
