PARAMETERS MEASURED TO
EVALUATE THE AIR QUALITY
Considering the citizens health:
Sulphur Dioxide SO2
Nitrogen Dioxide NO2
Particulate Matter PM10 and PM 2,5
Carbon Monoxide CO
Benzene C6H6
Ozone O3
Considering protection of plants: SO2, NO2, O3.
THE AIR QUALITY
MONITORING SYSTEM
The air quality tests in the City of Gdańsk are
provided by:
Voivodship Inspectorates for Environmental Protection in Gdańsk,
a network of automatic measuring stations of the ARMAAG Foundation (Agency for Regional Monitoring of the Atmosphere in the Gdańsk Agglomeration).
Data from the automatic monitoring network in Gdańsk metropolitan area enables:
identification of the areas and possible pollution sources,
verification of the criteria to evaluate the air quality,
evaluation of long term tendencies,
modelling processes.

ON LINE AIR QUALITY INDEX
In November 2006 the first information panels were installed in Gdańsk and Gdynia.
The panels are located in the city hall buildings, they are automatically operated and they present data on the air quality on the current basis. The information on air quality index as well as on different institutions and projects referring to the protection of the air are also presented.

PROBLEMS WE DEAL WITH…
Individual and local heating systems – boiler houses fuelled with coal
Transport
PM10 suspended matter
Benzo(a)pyrene
Burning waste
The city of Gdańsk is consequently implementing the Emission
reduction plan adopted by the City Council on 22 May 1997.
According to the plan the following activities are taken:
liquidation and modernization of the remaining local boiler
houses fuelled by coal in the municipal buildings and Gdansk
Heating Company sp. z o.o. utilities
decrease of the amount of individual coal stoves
AIR POLLUTION REDUCTION PLAN
pollution reduction from transport – by modernization of
municipal buses and trams, building cycle paths and bicycle parks,
improving the public transportation services
increasing the green spaces area and the number of trees
planted in the city – to absorb the CO2 emission
activities aiming at increase of use of energy from renewable
sources (heat pumps, solar collectors, biomass).

New road projects in Gdansk
SOUTHERN CITY BYPASS
• The Southern City Bypass is one of the most important road investments in the city
• It will allow those driving through the city to bypass the densely built-up areas of the
city centre and the new residential districts in the south of the city. It will also improve
transport between the port, Tri-city Bypass and the A-1 motorway, which is under
construction. The Southern Bypass will considerably contribute to the reduction of
traffic in the city centre and facilitate a quick exit from the city using Sucharskiego
Street. The Southern Bypass will direct transit traffic from national roads No 7 (the
future express road S7) and No 1 to the existing express road S6. Every day, thirty
thousand vehicles enter the city centre of Gdansk by the national road No 7 (from
Warsaw) and about twelve thousand drives into the city by the national road No 1.
• The total length of the Southern Bypass is 19 km
