M O D E L B E N T L E Y M A R K V I

A new type of sealing rubber f o r the outer edge of all doors in the atan- d o a n has been developed, and it is desired t o f i t this new seal t o customerst cars i f trouble w i t h the existing seals is encountered,

The new seal is a very soft, white, sponge rubber, r o u w y triangular in section, as shown at 'A' on the diagram and the apex of the triangle forms the contact point f o r the door, except in the special instance of the trunk do- (see l a te r ) , Owing to its spongy nature, the rubber i s very susceptible t o o i l or grease,

The seal is held in position by the ordinvy Bostik 'C' adhesive No,252, anti it is essential when applying t o makt sure a l ibera l quantity enters the groove in the base of the seal. The adhesive should be applied both t o the seal and t o the channel in the body which is t o receive the seal, The best results a r c obtained if the adhesive is allowed t o get tacky before f inal ly pressing the two surfaces together.

When applying the rubber t o the main doors, start at the centre post at the top corner ( C ) h e r e a mitre joint is essential, then work downwards a short distance a t a time, mnking sure that the apex of the section is lying i n a srtraight l ine, owing t o the extreme f l e d b i l i t y of the rubber this r e q ~ l u c care, Only right-angle bends need a joint as the rubber w i l l acconnodate the others. The action of the door shutting tends t o push the seal sidevnys, particularly on the length above the top -hinge on the centre door post, so it mqy be found necessary to reduce the volume of the rubber by cutting a thin layer off the base of the t r i m m a r section w i t h a pair of scissors, This operation must be carried out before the adhesive is dry and the seal must be pulled away carefully as it readily tears,

The lowcr edge of the trunk door (D) which d e s a joint with the upper edge of the spare wheel compartment l i d requires the special treatment show-. an the diagram whereby the rubber is applied lying sideways, as there is in- sufficient room for the mbber t o be applied normally i f the spare wheel compartment l i d is t o shut properly.

&thou& the new mbber has greater f lexibi l iw than the old (B), it may be necessaxy t o adjust the door s t r iker plates to obtain good motcl~ing of the doors with the body shell and a good door shutting action.

CUTTING OF DCOR SEAUE RUBBERS.

FQB CA- l ACTION

Ime a r i g i d spring loaded door s t r i k e r plates have been the subject of modification act ion under Service bdl e t i n BB- 30, whereby a so l id s t r i k e r p l a t e w a s f i t t e d on a Category 2 basis. A t the same time, these s t r i k e r plates were introduced on ca r s a t the factory p r i o r t o delivery.

The safety catch on the so l id s t r i k e r p la te 5s rather shallower thnn on the spring loaded catch, and it has been discovered tha t owing t o variations in the project ion of the b o l t , t he depth of engagement on the saf'ety catch may not be qui te suf f ic ien t , although there i s i n every case adequate engagement with the main oatch when the door i s closed.

It has been decided t o check a l l cars f i t t e d with sol id s t r i k e r p la tes , and i f necessary i m r e a s e the depth of engagement of the b o l t , by aui table packing of the s t r i k e r plate .

W i l l Retai lers please take immediate Categorg l act ion t o inspect all oars in t h e i r t e r r i t o r y f o r this feature. The correct procedure f o r checking d oorrection is as follows:-

(J ) Check t h e amount of f r e e movement of the external handle before moviry the bol t when the door is open..

(ii) Close t h e door on t o the safety catch only.

( i i i ) Chmk the f r ee movement of the handle before moving the bol t . 'l'his must be a t l ea s t @' more a t the end of the handle as compared with the door open f r ee movement.

In addition, it may be necessary t o pack out the male port ion of the door dovetail . I n th i s case, the amount of engagement can be determined by v5 sual examinat ion, since there rill be a dist inct marking on the wedge. ALTERATION TO MISTIN: PARTS & PART NUMBERS.

(SUPERSEDES PREVI3US ISSUE DATED 4. l l .&S).

Subsequent to the publication of Service Bullet in BB-66, cer tain modificatiors t o the existing brass suction pipe and induction manifold adaptor have been effected.

Due t o the additional experience gained since the introduction of the Vacuum Operated Windscreen Washer on existing Bentley Saloons, the three 1.00" coi ls a t the dash end of the original suction pipe assembly have been deleted, and a t the same time the in te rna l diameter of the pipe i t s e l f has been increased. The new pipe assembly has been allocated a fresh par t number (R-41 03) , and rep laces the or iginal pipe ass mbly (R-41 l OA ) .

I n view of this increase in pipe diameter, i t has a l so been necessary t o provide a new adaptor for the forward and of the induction manifold, the pa r t number of the new adaptor being R-4248, replacing R-4109 as previously stated.

It has now been decided t o include these two new i t e m in the Standard Kit (Trioo) Windscreen Washer, thus making i t unnecessary fo r individual ordering as previously s tated on Page 6 of the original leaf le t .

I t is however, pointed out that the four suct ion pipe retaining c l ip s are now separate items, and must be ordered individually, quoting the following new part number:-

R-4276. Clip fo r Suction Pipe & Thermo Cable. 4 Off.

The Bentley 'R' Type boot l i d is manufactured from Bimal S k e t BB-3, a l igh t , non-corrosive, aluminium al loy containing magnesium. This Bulletin gives information of the recanmended procedure f o r welding and f i l l i n g where repairs are necessary due t o accidental damage.

I n general, small welds and f i l l i n g s may be carried out a s described with excellent r e su l t s but prolonged heating is apt t o cause surface dis tor t ions which cannot be sat isfactory beaten out. Where damage is a t a l l extensive a new boot l i d should be f i t t ed .

Messrs Bimabright Ltd., are a l so offering a cmplete k i t containing a good supply of a l l necessary consumable materials, a 8.1.3'. Retai lers interested are asked t o write direct fo r a quotation. A l l items cal:, of course, be purchased separately.

The welding procedure closely rollows tha t f o r pure a1;rminiurn but the welding rod specif ied must be used. The ' leftwards' technique should be employed and, a f t e r i n i t i a l tacking, the weld should be canpleted i n one run a s quickly as possible.

(i ) S t r i p the paint a s necessary with cellulosg stripper. Thoroughly clean the edges t o be welded ~ 5 t h w i r e wool f o r a width of not l e s s than 4' on both wirfac-ds of the metal.

( i i ) Mix a small quantity oi' the f lux with wafer t o a smooth paste and brush i t on t o the cleaned edges on both s ides of the metal. Clean the welding rod with wire wool and brush it over with f lux paste.

( i i i ) Using a No.2 nozzle on Byitish 3xygen Cmpany or S.I.F. Torches, o r its equivalent on other torches, adjust the flame s o that i t is s l i gh t ly redicing; that is, i t has a s l igh t excess of acetyler~e. The flame should be smooth acd quiet.

(v ) 'lihen cool, wash off any surplus f l ux with hot water and a scrubbing brush. This is essent ial owing t o the strongly corrosive nature of the f lux used.

It i s applied i n a similar way t o normal matal l ic solders and l i t t l e heat is required. If an oxyacetylene flame i s used it should be neutral and so f t and only the t i p of the outer flame should contact the metal,

( i ) Remove the paint a s necessary with cellulose stripper.

( i i ) Thorowhly clean the ssrface with coarse sand-paper. Thls provides a rough surface t o which the f i l l e r can aahere. Cleaning with a wire brush i s insuff lc ient .

FOR INFORMATION

TRICO WINDSCREEN WASHER CONTROL VALVE

Pr io r to July 1956, the windscreen washer control valve, Pa r t No. R . 41 20, was fitted with a valve seat giving metal to metal contact. Trouble was experienced with this control valve owing to the metal to metal seating having a tendency to leak, causing poor engine idling. To overcome this problem, the design was changed to incorporate a valve seat of natural rubber.

Further trouble was encountered in the form of intermittent or complete failure of the control valve to operate the windscreen-washer . This failure was caused through damage of the natural rubber seat on the sharp edge of the valve seating. Accordingly, in February this year , the design of the control valve was changed to incorporate a Neoprene seat in place of natural rubber. To identify the modified control valve, it was marked with a spot of green paint on the side of the valve housing.

To date, this change has proved entirely satisfactory and it has been decided that this control valve will be supplied for all replacements. All control valves supplied will now have the Neoprene seat but they will not nece ssarily have the green identification mark.
