3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT PAGE 3

The ADVENT WREATH is a popular custom that originated in Germany in the 16th centu-ry. It consists of an evergreen wreath and four candles (traditionally, three purple candles and one rose one).

The joyful Sunday in Advent (known as Gau-

dete) is represented by rose (or pink) instead of the penitential purple color. Each night dur-ing the third week the mother of the family lights the pink as well as the two previously burned purple candles after the following prayer has been said.

The Third Week Father: O Lord, we beg Thee incline Thy ear to our prayers and enlighten the darkness of our minds by the grace of Thy visitation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The three candles are extinguished immediately following the meal.

We ask Christ to come, to set us free from our sins and from the punishment that we deserve. The trials and tribulations of this world are "brought on" by "our sins" of the sins of man-kind, from the fall of Adam and Eve on, and not of particular dangers that are direct punishment for our personal sins. Christ offers us salvation from our personal sins, and heals the world of the damage brought on by our collective sins.

Bishop Robert Barron has released an Advent prepara-

tion booklet! THESE ARE AN EARLY CHRISTMAS GIFT TO THE PARISH TO HELP

YOU PREPARE FOR THE CHRISTMAS SEASON.

They are available in the Narthex free of charge.

AGING RELIGIOUS NEED YOUR HELP

Senior Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests spent years working in Catholic schools, hospitals and agen-cies, often for little pay. Their sacrifices leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious col-lection helps provide prescriptions medications, nursing care and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime.

REACHING OUT

SUNDAY—this weekend!

In an effort to raise the awareness of our parish community of the many minis-tries and organizations supported by our parish through the OUTREACH MINIS-TRY, we would like to invite you to stop at our “Reaching Out“ booth after all masses this weekend!

Each month we will invite 1-2 ministries or organizations sup-ported by our parish through the Outreach Ministry to join us. Please stop by on THIS WEEKEND and learn more about SHERRY MEYER and the missionary in Uganda.

Sherry , a lay missionary serving on behalf of the Archdio-cese of Indianapolis, has been living in Uganda, East Africa since 1991. Born and raised in Indianapolis, she was a teach-er and principal Archdiocesan Catholic schools, including St. Roch, St. Christopher in Speedway and Roncalli High School. She has been training others in catechetical, liturgical and pastoral ministries. More than twelve years ago the local bishop asked her and another missionary to build a Catholic radio. That radio, Radio Pacis, has been broadcasting for twelve years on three different FM frequencies in order to accommodate all the local languages. The station has millions of listeners in northern Uganda. To learn more, see www.radiopacis.org. This weekend her sister, Nancy Meyer, will be selling crafts from Uganda to support her ministry.

We look forward to seeing you after mass THIS weekend!

VOCATION PRAYERS—MONDAY,

DECEMBER 12, AT ST. BARNABAS AT 7PM, Msgr. Tony will lead us in a Rosary, prayers, a homily, closing with Benedic-tion. All of this will take less than an hour. Please join him in praying for an increase in vocations and that we don't lose the few seminarians we have now.

There will be two opportuni-

ties to hear Vox Sacra, the archdiocesan schola canto-rum, in concert for Christmas. The concerts are Sunday, December 18, 4pm at St. Luke (7575 Holliday Drive East) and Friday, Decem-

ber 23, 7pm at Sacred Heart (1530 Union Street). Concerts are free and open to the public and feature Advent and Christmas music by Gabrieli, Hassler, Lau-ridsen, Kodaly, and more. CDs of the music will be available for sale for $10. Please come join us for a beautiful concert of sacred Advent and Christmas music.

The goal of Vox Sacra is to be a model of musical excellence for the Archdiocese and beyond, as well as to share with others the depth and the beauty of the treasury of sacred music found in the Catholic Church, especially its particular treasury of Gregorian chant and polyphony. While most Catholic parishes have choirs in their own communities, very few have the musical resources or the ability to sing more involved, complicated, or difficult music. Vox Sacra has that ability, and does its best to showcase more challenging literature both so it is not lost and so that it can serve its proper role in beautify-ing the liturgy and edifying the people. Vox Sacra is able to ap-proach music that has a greater musical demand or thick texture in a way that goes beyond making music and embraces the spirituality of the sacred repertoire.

The members, first of all, form the core of the Indianapolis Archdioce-san Choir, a volunteer choir comprised of singers from all over the Archdiocese. They serve as leaders of this group and a backbone of musicality and support. Vox Sacraalso provides music within the Arch-diocese for several liturgical events, including Masses, devotions, and other functions both with and separately from the full Archdiocesan Choir. Vox Sacra will sing outside of a liturgical context in concert, though it will still focus almost exclusively on sacred music. It will also travel both within the country and internationally to bring the talents of Indianapolis and the treasury of Catholic sacred music to the coun-try and to the world at large. See www.voxsacra.com for more details

Question for Children: Why is Christmas such a time of happiness for people? Question for Youth: God speaks to you every day: Isaiah tells us our ears and eyes will be opened in Christ to hear God’s voice. What do you hear God saying to you? Question for Adults: What is there in this promise from the Prophet Isaiah that gives you hope? How have you seen this promise fulfilled in Christ?

HEARTS & HANDS Through the OUTREACH MINISTRY, our parish community has made a financial gift to help families and individuals attain affordable, long-term home ownership in the near-west side of Indianapolis by providing education, mentoring, and quality rehabilitated homes. They work to rehab houses in the St. Anthony parish. Several parishioners are active with Hearts & Hands and the Outreach Ministry is a way to add some financial support to their volunteer efforts both on the Board of Directors as well as working at the homes. Several are in the process of being rehabbed currently and hope to be finished by 2017. “Because of you, 4 houses can’t wait to experience the changed we have in store for them. And, they’re even more excited to meet their future families” www.heartsandhandsindy.org/. If you would like to offer a project or ministry needing assistance to the Outreach Ministry, obtain a request form in the parish office or contact Connie Merkel, [email protected]. The Outreach Ministry supports minis-tries and organizations outside of our parish that put into action the social teachings of our Catholic church.

A NOTE FROM A PARISHIONER. PLEASE READ AND BE CONSIDERATE OF HANDICAP SPACES:

“Please enter something in the bulletin about handi-capped parking. While leaving with my Dad Saturday night mass, 11/26/16, someone was parked in the space between handicapped spaces. I could barely get my Dad in the car and had to wait to load his wheelchair. Very inconsiderate. The person was not even handicapped that came and left in the car”.

PRISON MINISTRY - IWP Christmas bags - If anyone wishes to donate to their Christmas bags, I should have your item(s) by Friday, December 16 at the lat-est. Deodorant seems to be a desired item this year. DOC has changed suppliers so now they are getting smaller sizes at a higher price. And the deodorant seems to be gritty, causing sore underarms. In addition all toiletries or micro-waveable food items, snacks, candy, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Remember, they CANNOT have products that have been opened, anything in a glass or can container, containing alcohol and no nail polish. This is the only time, all year, that the prisoners are able to receive personal donations. If you have questions, please give me a call at 317-881-7464. Thank you and may God bless you and yours.
