OverviewThe Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program prepares AIA|DC professionals for future leadership roles. This year-long program consists of nine individual half-day sessions attended by 16 participants. Prospective participants go through an application process for selection where proven career success, community involvement and the individual’s firm support will be considered.

CurriculumThe curriculum will focus on core skills such as marketing and business development, office and firm management, presentation and public speaking, professional ethics and the law, philanthropy and board involvement, community service, industry trends, and the future of the practice. A full list of courses is described below.

Each individual session will be planned by members of the program and the program will be kicked off by a “Boot Camp” session to introduce the participants and design the curriculum for the year. Each member will be responsible to lead the planning of at least one session. Sessions will be held monthly from 12:00pm – 5:00pm, September through May.

Required Commitment to the ProgramThe program’s success is directly related to the attendance by the participants and therefore attendance is mandatory. Each participant of the program will be required to sign an Agreement Form that will require a signature from one of the participant’s principals of their firm. Each member will be allowed one excused absence. If two sessions are missed, a fine of $50 will be sent to the participants firm. A further absence will result in an additional $50 fine and expulsion from the program.

AIA Continuing EducationIt is intended that this program will have AIA CE credit available for its participants.

III. COMMITTEE

Sean Stadler, AIA, LEED AP | Co-FounderMr. Stadler is a Design Principal and partner of WDG where he focuses on elevating the firm’s stature

in design, with particular emphasis on enhancing the civic realm. He is directly responsible for

leading the planning, re-zoning and design of complex, high-profile urban projects, bolstering WDG’s

reputation for sustainable and distinctive, mid- and high-rise structures with contemporary urban

sensitivity. Mr. Stadler’s diverse experience includes commercial, residential, hospitality, educational,

and sporting facilities.

Mr. Stadler takes a strong leader ship role and his commitment to design excellence and innovative

thinking influences the projects he is involved with. He believes that design is a process and that this

process begins not with a brief, program, or even a charette, but rather with the people from which

ideas flow. His example shows that leadership is a two-way street; it involves the ability to influence

others and be receptive to the needs of those you lead. Sean believes design excellence is not the

application of certain techniques or the realization of inborn talent, so much as the development of a

latent understanding for the negotiations that are at the heart of architecture; negotiations between

site and program, client and designer, architect and engineer.

Prior to joining WDG, Mr. Stadler worked for the noted Cleveland architectural firms of Richard

Fleishman and Partners, and Gilberti Spittler International. In 1999 he relocated to Washington, DC

to work for the acclaimed firm of David M. Schwarz where he contributed to the design of prestigious

national projects including the $650 million American Airlines Center Arena in Dallas, TX, and the Dr.

Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, TX.

Mr. Stadler has been honored with an AIA President’s Award for his service to the profession and

was recognized as one of the “rising stars of the AEC industry” by Building Design + Construction

Magazine in 2009. He is a recipient of the 2011 AIA Young Architects award where the jury noted that

“he is a unique individual of outstanding talent and clear commitment.”

Ryan McEnroe, AIA, ASLA, NCARB, CLARB, LEED AP | Co-FounderRyan McEnroe, AIA, ASLA, LEED AP is the Co-Founder and Past-Chair for the CKLDP. Additionally he is an active participant within the professional community, serving on the NAAB and various committees for NCARB. He is the current Mid-Atlantic Regional Director on the AIA Young Architects Forum and serves the AIA|DC Chapter on the Emerging Architects Committee. In 2014 he was awarded the AIA|DC Emerging Architect Award and in 2015 the DCCEAS Young Architect Award. Ryan is currently a Project Architect and Landscape Architect for Quinn Evans Architects in Washington, DC.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEERicardo J. Rodríguez, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP BD+C, AIT | Graphics AdvisorMr. Rodriguez joined WDG Architecture in 2012. He serves as an experienced Associate with a wide

range of project experience – from sensitive government workplaces to large hospitality venues. His

ability to manage and coordinate with multi-disciplinary design teams ensures quality control, proper

scheduling and project closeout. He has managed design-bid-build and international design-build

indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contracts for the U.S. State Department. Furthermore, his

depth of knowledge ranges from sensitive document control policies, to Unified Facilities Criteria and

biological hazard laboratory design requirements (BMBL). Mr. Rodriguez has successfully completed

projects which comply with the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (NISPOM)

criteria. Also, he has championed the implementation of physical security guidelines (Anti-Terrorism/

Force Protection and Software Engineering Directorate). His leadership capabilities and technical

expertise has allowed him to coordinate Building Information Modeling (BIM) training and help develop

firm-wide design standards.

Aimee Woodall, AIA, LEED AP | Past ChairAimee Woodall is a licensed architect, a LEED® accredited professional, and an Associate at RTKL in Washington, DC. She is a member of the AIA, the USGBC, and the Association for Preservation Technology. Aimee is also an active member in the AIA’s HABS Coordinating Committee, and is proud to have been part of the inaugural class of the DC chapter’s Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program.

Originally from Richardson, Texas, Aimee holds a Bachelors of Environmental Design, a Masters of Architecture, and a Certificate in Historic Preservation from Texas A&M University. She joined RTKL in 2000, and has comprehensive practical experience in historic preservation, renovation, and modernization projects in Washington, DC. Some of the notable local projects she has been involved in include the Sidney Yates Building Renovation, the Modernization of the Herbert C. Hoover Building for the Department of Commerce, the U.S. Capitol Visitor’s Center, and the Preble Hall Naval History Museum at the U.S. Naval Academy.

ADVISORY COMMITTEEEric Teran, RA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C | Website AdvisorEric Teran graduated from the University of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in 2001 with a Bachelor in Architecture. Shortly thereafter he traveled the world visiting over 60 countries in 18 months where he helped various local communities with projects involving architecture and construction. After 10 years of working at small firms in California and Madrid, Spain designing multi-million dollar homes Eric relocated to Washington DC to work for Shalom Baranes Asoociates (SBA) where he has been the last 5 years. Throughout his time at SBA he has worked on hotels, offices and mixed-use buildings. A recent scholar in the 2016 Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program Eric believes that their needs to be more emphasis on affordable and accessible design.

From 2006-2008 he designed and built his own home in California using sustainable principals. Once again in 2015 he began a new challenge of trying to design/build an affordable energy efficient home on a vacant lot in Alexandria, Virginia. By designing a home that may be built using prefabricated and modular methods the overall construction cost should be around $120 SF. Truly making this affordable.

RTKL Associates Inc, Washington, DCAssociate Vice President, 2013 - May 2016Historic Preservation Architect, Sustainability Specialist, Project Architect for all phases of design, including Construction Administration .

Associate, July 2006 - 2013As a project architect and project manager, my daily responsibilities include planning and managing multiple small projects through all aspects of design and construction. Collaboration with team members, including in-house design and consulting as well as clients and contractors, has been a critical role in which I have seen success. Technical expertise is also expected of all RTKL associatesand project architects: I have been successful in preparing drawings and specifications for projects of various sizes and at multiple phases of design. During construction, my project responsibilities include review of RFI and submittals, monthly payment applications, change order requests, and final punch lists, as well as weekly meetings with the Owner and Contractor to discuss on-site construction issues. I have been responsible for quality control and supervision of project deliverables, preparing agenda for and presenting design issues and solutions at client meetings, and advising and mentoring junior team members. I am recently responsible for preparing project proposals, which include estimated schedules, deliverables, and fees, and I regularly attend prospective project interviews with upper management

Designer, 2004 - 2006While a Designer at RTKL that I finished my exams and licensing requirements. My daily office responsibilities included collaboration with senior team members, other junior team members, and consultants. I completed construction document-level detailing of various building components, with some supervision, and coordination of disciplines to produce a construction set. On several projects, I was involved in schematic-level design of interior spaces. On the Capitol Visitor’s Center, I was responsible for documenting and specifying restoration treatment for all of the Olmsted landscape elements.

Design Staff Level II, 2002 - 2004I showed early leadership as Design Staff Level 2 by being one of the first RTKL employees to complete my LEED Accreditation, early in 2002. Daily responsibilities at this level included code research and construction document detailing. At this stage in my career I was also responsible for completing a full LEED EB analysis for EPA’s headquarters in the Federal Triangle. On-site documentation of existing conditions and new construction at both EPA and the US Capitol gave me valuable field experience.

Design Staff Level 1, 2000 - 2002My daily responsibilities as a young professional at RTKL included project support through drafting, data collection, research, and report writing. I was supervised by senior RTKL staff, and developed my professional skills by understanding red-lines in details and plans, by attending project meetings to identify project issues and produce comprehensive meeting reports, and by participating in extensive field survey of existing and new construction conditions at EPA headquarters in the Federal Triangle.

LEADERSHIP & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

RESEARCH & PUBLICATION

DESIGN CO-CHAIR, 2016

DCBIA Community Improvement DayEvery year the DCBIA designs, funds, and constructs improvements to a park or garden space in under-served neighborhoods through the Community Improve-ment Day. In 2016, I am the design co-chair leading the efforts to revitalize the Benning Terrace Community Center. As co-chair I lead desgin charrettes, set the schedule and deliverables, and guide design teams to generate a cohesive plan to be constructed on Build Day.

In 2015, I led a design team in the biggest DCBIA CID effort yet- transforming a for-mer housing project site into DC’s first urban farm.As a new design team member in 2014 I was involved in designing and building a portion of a community park.

TEAM LEADER, 2012-2016

CANstruction, Washington Architectural FoundationAs a team leader of the CANstruction team, I’ve helped to plan, fundraise, and execute the SmithGroupJJR entry for the Washington Architectural Foundation’s CANstruction event for several years.

TEAM CAPTAIN, EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER

Washington Womens Rugby Football ClubOutside of my professional activities, I have been a member of the rugby communi-ty since 2003. A leader among my peers, I served as co-captain over several years on teams in Washington and Boston. In the past 10 years of involvement with the Washington Women’s RFC I have served on the executive board with a long tenure as the Secretary of Public Relations. I modernized our team’s image and interface. I reformed the sponsorship structure, secured new investments in the team, and overhauled a fundraising system to better profit.

COMMUNITY CHARRETTE PARTICIPANT, 2014

“Under the Rails” Charrette, Fairfax County OCRThis one-day invitational charrette combined design leaders from the DC area to reimagine the physical space created by the new silver line metro traversing Tysons Corner. With 5 new stops and a variety of above-, below- and at-grade conditions, teams worked over the course of the day to present concepts to transform the infrastructural space into community amenity.

DESIGN COMMITTEE MEMBER

Mission Hill Main StreetAs a member of the Mission Hill Main Street Design Committee I was engaged in the review of several design initaitive for the Mission Hill neighborhood. This included critiquing a design competition among local high school students for a prototypical bicycle rack to be centrally located in and representative of my neighborhood in Boston.

CHAPTER MEMBER

Washington Chapter of the American Institute of ArchitectsI enjoy an active membership in the AIA, attending and participating in lectures, lo-cal seminars and conferences. Last year’s joint ULI-AIA Healthy Buildings, Healthy Cities, Healthy Places Charrette was particulary interesting to me. I participated in the Music & Architecture event in 2013, performing a classical peice in a trio with two other architect-musicians.

CONTRIBUTOR

“Perspectives”Since launching the Urban Design channel of the SmithGroupJJR blog in May 2015, I have contributed with several pieces on ur-ban design. With more in the works, I hope to launch my writing to broader platforms of architecture and urban design, and build this into potential presentations.

CREATOR

Urban Design ShowcaseTo further the practice of urban design within SmithGroupJJR, I led colleagues in instituting an annual internal design competition. This facilitates knowledge growth across our nationwide firm and offers colleagues from other disciplines the opportunity to learn about urban design and the impacts of our work. The Showcase focuses on the heart of our profession: good design.

LEADER

Technology IntegrationWork smarter, not harder; I embrace new technologies to streamline production to focus on design. In 2015 I was awarded an internal grant to explore new GIS-based parametric modeling software for generat-ing city-wide planning models. In early 2016 I was the co-creator of an internal design competition to get people learning how to and using the 3D printer; the competition drew 21 entrants and 17 new users.

TIMELINEURBAN DESIGN & PLANNING

ARCHITECTURE

EISENHOWER WEST SMALL AREA PLAN, 2016APA Excellence in Sustainable Design, 2016APA Virginia Outstanding Plan Award, 2016This master plan examined 620 acres surrounding an under-utilized station of the Washington, DC Metro. Low density and industrial uses define the exist-ing area, with the added challenges of an existing waste-to-energy plant, and freight rail and a stream that divide the site. The plan seeks to develop new nodes of density at locations identified by the community, revitalize the stream and provide new open space, transform industrial spaces into a innovation district, grow as an ecodistrict, and promote transit, cycling, and alternative mobility with complete streets. The interdisciplinary team worked closely with the community through the planning process to garner input and support for the project.

SOUTHEAST BOULEVARD PLANNING STUDY, 2015The Southeast Boulevard Planning Study rethinks a portion of decommissioned freeway that separates the neighborhood of Capitol Hill from the Anacostia Riv-erfront. No longer needed for through-traffic transportation, the study proposes 3 ways to reconnect the city through new land uses, pedestrian connectivity, and multi-modal mobility.

SCOTTS RUN MASTER PLAN, 2014APA Excellence in Sustainable Design, 2015NAIOP Award of Excellence, 2013Spurred by the silver line extension of the Washington Metro to Tysons Corner, the master plan for Scotts Run transforms 40-acres of sprawling suburban office park into a walkable, sustainable, transit-oriented development. Mixed use buildings replace surface parking and new streets introduce a walkable, bikeable grid. Revitalization of a stream valley traversing the site provides public amenity space and creates a place with a unique identity.

WATERFRONT LANDING, 2010AIA DC Unbuilt Merit Award, 2010A Comprehensive Building Design Studio project, this Merit-award winning project transformed an information hub program into a public park at the hinge of Maine Avenue and the DC Wharf. The design team worked within the constructs and intent of the Perkins Eastman masterplan to design an engaging urban space for the future of the District.

US EPA LABORATORY ASSESSMENTSmithGroupJJR has an on-going relationship with the EPA, studying quality and efficiency of thier laboratory portfolio. As a project archi-tect on these projects I have implemented new tools to streamline the site surveying process. I work closely with a lab planning specialist to evaluate the facilities and build programs for consolidation efforts. I orchestrate the composition of final reports, generating graphics and text and leading coordination across the disciplines.

NATIONAL ZOOLOGICAL PARKOn the opposite end of the spectrum from my planning work, I have developed construction documents and specifications for a small information kiosk and bandshell on historic Olmsted Walk at the National Zoo. The project involved multiple presentations to the Commis-sion of Fine Arts, and contextual sensitivity to Olmsted Walk, its characteristic mature trees to be preserved, and material selection that would set a precedent for the future of the Zoo.

TOKYO Intrigued by the concrete jungle and drawn by the culture and its people, I explored and observed the architecture imbedded in the maze of its streets.

LONDON Treading a line between experiencing, waiting, watching, and recording the movement by people, I was captivated by the relationships between space, person, and group.

ROME Growing up in Rome amongst the ruins of the Roman Empire, the gems of the Baroque and the adjacent Etruscan remains, I developed respect and lessons form their formal and spatial complexities.

VICENZA Spending a semester abroad in the hometown of Carlo Scarpa and Andrea Palladio brought an extended appreciation for the materiality, geometric layout and conscious detail of the built form, in relation to the urban fabric and public space.*

NYU INSTITUTE OF FINE ARTS Archeological Dig Summer 2004

The sacred sanctuary, located on the island of Samothrace in the northern Aegean, dates back to the late archaic peaking in the classical period. The two month experience afforded much dialogue in the controversial world of anastolosis, conservation, and archeology.

MVVA offered a unique perspective on the built environment from the scale of the landscape and urban context. The Hudson river project introduces the first topographic park built on a historic pier. The undulating landscape was a challenge due to loading conditions, resulting in models and calculations for proper proportions of soil and foam. This lead to an investigation of various lightweight fills, soils and unique detail drawings.

(Washington, DC)SHALOM BARANES ASSOCIATES 2007-Present

Shalom Baranes Associates is a DC firm whose work is predominately urban and within the Washington Beltway. The firm has designed Washington’s most acclaimed projects such as CityCenter DC, 22 West and the conversion of the Georgetown incinerator into the Ritz Carlton Complex. While famed for its ability to gain approval for Washington’s most progressive projects, its true talent resides in the adaptive reuse of historic structures, whether federal or private.

MCINTURFF ARCHITECTS 2001-2003

ADAMS ARCHITECTS Summer 2001

LAWSON & ASSOCIATES Summer 1998- 2000

The firm's work is rooted in a discourse of modern and regional ideologies evident in the finely detailed designs. The firm's use of working models for each project demonstrates a dedication to the spatial, material, and detail of each project.

Adams Architects is a small historic preservation firm in Alexandria Virginia. As a designer I was given a range of projects, scaling from furniture to additions. This entailed a knowledge of permitting, construction details, rendering, and an understanding of historic architectural contexts. This experience was instrumental in the various approaches toward interventions in the historic urban fabric, along with gaining professional insight into building preservation, tectonics, construction, and review boards.

Lawson and Associates is a commercial firm focusing on the design of HDTV stations. The work entailed the renovation and updating of NBC and FOX regional stations. The work was highly technical, and the experience on CAD and construction documents was invaluable.

Each lecture dealt with a different theme through historical and contemporary examples of the relationship between the tools architects use and their authorship.

The course introduces a conceptual framework for the design of building assemblies, as informed by a clear understanding of construction technologies and of the properties of building materials.

The course introduces students to the role of materials and fabrication in architecture. Properties and principles of materials are discussed through conceptual, philosophical, ethical and technological issues.

2010-2012

Leadership is a service and a calling. To be a leader, one must serve those who serve them in order to build their successes. In the collaborative environment of architecture, a team must support each other and their leader must enable, support, and encourage them to succeed. Through service, we replace ego with humility, hubris with collective pride and the efforts of one with the accomplishments of many. I hope my resume shows how I live my personal definition of leadership every day.
