THE ART GALLERY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926) | Waterloo Bridge 1899-1901 | oil on canvas | 64.7 x 81.5 cm | Kerry Stokes Collection, Perth

This focused exhibition showcases works from the Kerry Stokes Collection, one of Australia’s most significant and respected private collections. The works on display are mostly by French artists and date from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period of great change and experimentation in European art.

Highlights include two paintings by Monet, the best known of the French Impressionists, an exquisite painting of Notre-Dame by Matisse, an enigmatic work by the Surrealist Magritte, and works by Picasso. This is a rare opportunity for people in Perth to see a selection of artworks by some of the innovators of modern art, and which are not usually accessible to the public.

Exhibitions at AGWA

Year 12 Perspectives 2013 brings you a selection of work by some of Western Australia’s most inspirational young artists. One of the Gallery’s most anticipated exhibitions, its popularity is based on the consistently high calibre of original and dynamic art produced by Western Australia’s year 12 students.  The exhibition speaks to visitors in a direct and engaging way, offering a mix of reflective, emotional and socially-committed works that takes us into the minds of today’s youth. This year’s show is no exception; offering a kaleidoscope of fresh and innovative thinking, students draw from their environment and experiences to provoke, inspire and shake up our perceptions of the world we live in.

Guy Grey-Smith (1916-1981) was a Western Australian artist whose challenging paintings of the Western Australian landscape secured his position as an artist of national importance in the 1960s.

Guy Grey-Smith: Art as Life21 March – 14 July 2014

Featuring more than 100 works, this is the first full retrospective of the work of Grey-Smith since his death and will focus on recurrent themes and motifs that illustrate his powerful and unique contribution to the revitalisation of Australian painting in the post-war period.

Running from his earliest completed paintings (of the 1940s) to his monumental landscapes of the late 1970s, and including still life and figure studies as well as works on paper and ceramics, the retrospective will give a new insight into the remarkable achievements of this determined modernist.

THE ART GALLERY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Teachers – this exhibition is a must see for all photography students!

American photographer Richard Avedon (1923-2004) produced portrait photographs of the people who defined the twentieth century. At the core of his artistic ethos was a profound concern with the emotional and social freedom of the individual in society. Built from the Richard Avedon Foundation collection, the exhibition Richard Avedon People explores the range of his photographic practice from 1945 to 2004. Avedon’s work as a fashion photographer was groundbreaking for its combination of flair and formal precision.

He also photographed cultural and political figures who strongly influenced life and society in the twentieth century, creating inspiring portraits of performers, artists, writers and countercultural leaders such as Elizabeth Taylor, Malcolm X and His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. Curated by the National Portrait Gallery’s Senior Curator, Dr Christopher Chapman, in partnership with The Richard Avedon Foundation, New York, Richard Avedon People is the first Australian exhibition of Avedon’s work. The Foundation was structured by Avedon in his lifetime and encourages the study and appreciation of Avedon’s photography through exhibitions, publications and outreach programs.

THE ART GALLERY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Karen Casey (Australian, born 1956) | Black dog - white dog II 1989 | Lithograph | 26.6 x 25.7 cm | State Art Collection, Art Gallery of Western Australia | Purchased 1991

Animal Ark/Animal Art will demonstrate the many uses to which the animal motif has been put by generations of artists. Through its accessible subject matter it is intended to expand the understanding of art in young audiences. Drawn from the State Art Collection, the exhibition explores the mythology, symbolism and representation of animals through paintings, sculptures, decorative art and works on paper.  It considers issues raised by depictions of animals, such as the interface between animal and human identity, the use of animals as ‘machines’ or companions, as decorative embellishments of human activity, and as subjects in scenes of daily life, portraits and nature studies.

The exhibition traces these themes through the work of contemporary artists such as Jenny Watson, Rosslyn Piggott, Roger Ballen, Darren Sylvester, Penny Byrne, Robin Best and Therese Howard; historical artists Hans Heysen, Septimus Power, Marino Marini, Charles Blackman, Arthur Boyd, Marc Chagall, Robert Rensel and A. H McIntosh; and Indigenous artists such as Karen Casey, Jimmy Pike, Djangubali and Ngarra.

Animal Ark/Animal Art aims to engage audiences of all ages, with a special emphasis on young students.
