RABBI’S MESSAGE Rabbi Rachael Jackson
We just ended a
very full month of
holy days, from
Rosh Hashanah to
Simchat Torah.
From the creation
of the world to the
gift of the Torah, we have experi-
enced it all; this emotional-spiritual
rollercoaster. And now we enter the
quietest of all months, Cheshvan.
This year November coincides
pretty much entirely with the Jewish
month of Cheshvan. There is some
debate on what the true name of the
month is—whether it is Cheshvan or
Marcheshvan. There are subtle dif-
ferences in both, but I’ll leave the
details of ancient Israelite and Ak-
kadian languages for another time.
Mar-Cheshvan is sometimes used
because mar can mean bitter. The
month of Cheshvan can seem bitter
because it has no holidays (Shabbat
notwithstanding of course).
I disagree. I think after all the ups
and downs we have had, all the time
we have spent with one another, in
the last month, we need some spiri-
tual space. We need the time to
process what we did together. We
need the time to put into practice the
goals we set for ourselves, without
interruption.
Think about a time when you went

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I have often spoken and written about the need for
volunteers for projects or committees. You have
heard me say that almost everything we do at Agudas
Israel is done by volunteers. It is amazing that, small
as we are, we are able to enlist and engage so many of
you in our committees and special projects. Of
course, we still need more…
One particular committee that functions at Agudas
Israel, exemplifies the many values and attributes as-
sociated with volunteering at Agudas Israel. Our Se-
curity Committee, under the leadership of David
Monoson, works diligently to define and meet their
goals; primarily assuring a safe environment for each
of us and for the synagogue itself.
Why am I choosing this committee as an exemplar?
First, the members of the committee share a degree of
expertise and interest in the work of the committee.
The group seems to have developed an esprit de corps
and are passionate in their intent to make the syna-
gogue a better, more secure place for us to worship,
study, and play. The committee has the full support
of our leadership and, I hope, knows that we have
their back.
Within the Reform movement, there is a new cul-
ture of volunteer engagement that is encouraged.
This new culture allows each of us to share and nur-
ture the synagogue and the future of the community
(Friedman, 2007). How do we accomplish this? We
need to find the interests, skills, passions of each of
our congregants. We need to provide both, short
term, long term and flexible opportunities that allow
you to choose how you wish to participate. Commit-
tee participation tends to be an ongoing commit-
ment, whereas working on projects such as mitzvah
day or fund raising projects are focused, short(er)
term commitments. Some work, such as working on
Chai Lites and other publications and promotional
materials can possibly be done from home, or in the
office on your own schedule. Volunteering in the
office can be an ongoing commitment or flexible to
work on special projects.
The point is that if we are able to actively engage
in the congregation, we can create a vibrant congre-
gation in which all members are driven by their indi-
vidual passions to fulfill the mission of Agudas Is-
rael.
As new members join our congregation, I will be
seeking you out, picking your brain and your heart,
to see how best you can serve Agudas Israel and
how Agudas Israel can best serve you. For those of
you who have already made that commitment, that
are here to support us at every turn, I can only say
todah rabah!
Shalom
Dr. Linda Perkel, President
on a big trip—something you had planned for quite
some time. You made an itinerary, reservations, and
packed. You waited for the trip, sometimes patiently
and sometimes not. Then it happened, and it was more
than you ever imagined.
And then you came home. You came back to the
every-day activities, like laundry and dishes and bills
and appointments. Perhaps, though, you cook a new
dish which you learned from your travels. You speak
with your friends about the adventures you had. You
look through your pictures to figure out which ones go
into the photo album. And you breathe. You let the
adventure truly sink in. The greatest journey starts
when you come home.
So, too, it can be with Cheshvan. Our festival cycle
has a rhythm: “times of intense spiritual work and
times of quiet when the after- effects of that work can
reverberate in our hearts and souls” [Rabbi Rachel
Barenblatt].
I hope that we are able to feel that reverberation
throughout this coming month and into the future.
On a side note, while we have no Jewish holidays to
celebrate (again, aside from Shabbat), we have many
opportunities to be with our community this month,
many of which you will find described in this newslet-
ter and listed on our calendar.
Wishing everyone a calm and quiet Cheshvan!
Warmly,
Rabbi Rachael Jackson

Life Cycle Moments
Bonnie's Byline We have welcomed in the New Year with hope and
prayers for a good and healthy year for everyone…
special thanks to Karen Murray for organizing a great
Break-the Fast. In October we had lunch in the Suk-
kah, followed by a private “Behind the Scenes Tour”
of the Flat Rock Playhouse.
For our November program, as we approach
Thanksgiving, Sisterhood invites you to an afternoon
to give thanks at a social luncheon on Monday, No-
vember 14, 11:45am in a private room at Sol Y Luna
in Laurel Park. We will give thanks, hear some short
appropriate seasonal readings, and learn some “fun
facts” with a game of trivia....lunch on your own. A
great time will be had by all!! Contact Joan Kershner
t o make your rese rva t ion , t oday!
([email protected] or 828-243-2929).
Then, we look forward to our Pre-Chanukah
Luncheon and Game Day on Monday, December
19th…Latkes, songs, fun, AND our Judaica Boutique
will be open for ALL of your Chanukah shopping.
We are planning exciting programs (thanks to Joan
Kershner) every month for you to enjoy; giving you a
reason to be part of a very special Sisterhood. If you
have a program suggestion, please do not hesitate to
contact Joan or myself…It is never too late to join
Sisterhood…we welcome new and returning mem-
bers every day.
Shalom,
Bonnie Cooper, Sisterhood President
As I write this message for our November Chai Lites,
I am reminded of the Latin expression “Tempus Fugit”.
It’s absolutely amazing to me how quickly this year has
passed by. However, looking outside our mountain-top
home windows, indeed, I see the fall colors popping
out, and notice all the leaves that are accumulating on
our lawn and driveway. Before we know it, our land-
scape will be barren of leaves, and if we are fortunate,
we will be enjoying the beauty of some white stuff that
will replace our once green canopy.
Along with the changing of the seasons, we are also
getting ready to bid a fond farewell to our snowbirds,
who are pruning their wings and packing their bags to
flock south to a sunnier, warmer environment. Florida
is only a day’s drive from here, but boy, what a change
in weather, temperature, and ubiquitous traffic jams. Of
course, there is always the allure of Early Bird Specials
that all enjoy once they find a place to park within rea-
sonable proximity to the local watering holes.
For those of us brave enough to stay here and to
weather the colder temperatures up in the hills of West-
ern NC, we can revel at the thought of enjoying the
peace and tranquility of the countryside, with less traf-
fic congestion, and shorter waiting times at our favorite
eateries.
October has been a very busy month for everyone,
what with the celebration of our New Year, 5777, along
with Yom Kippur services, fasting and feasting, di-
rectly followed by Sukkot, and upcoming Simchat To-
rah. We have been spending a lot of time at Agudas
Israel which seems to become our second home during
this time of year.
Brotherhood has been busy during these holidays,
providing security during services, and erecting the
sukkah at the new, hurricane proof pergola. I person-
ally wish to thank Alan Cooper, Ron Weintraub, Perry
Reihs, Joe Lenert, Jerry Salatino, Barton Bohnen, and
Mike Hodes for joining me at the Levinson’s property
to cut and transport the bamboo branches and for at-
taching these on the pergola for all to enjoy the sukkah.
My thanks are also extended to all the volunteers who
selflessly donated their time and efforts to provide these
and other much appreciated services to the Agudas Is-
rael Congregation.
Once again, our camera club is planning outings to
the near-by Blue Ridge Mountains for some excellent
opportunities to snap some pictures of the fall colors.
There are still a few nice warm days left for golfing,
and Mike Beckerman is busy organizing outings for the
Agudas-it-gets golfing group at local courses. The
weather has been quite dry lately, and the courses are in
great shape.
We were planning to organize another tour to BMW in
Greenville, but the plant is undergoing some major reno-
vations, and has cancelled tours till next year. We will be
checking with BMW about their schedules, and let eve-
ryone know as soon as we can find an opening for tour-
ing the plant.
Although winter is approaching I know that we will be
keeping ourselves warm with continued camaraderie and
projects through the upcoming months together with the
Agudas Israel family.
To all you snowbirds, we hope you have a lovely time
in Florida, and look forward to seeing you again in the
spring.
Our November meeting will be on Sunday, Novem-
ber 27th, 2016.
Shalom:
Michael Thorz, Brotherhood President
THE PRESIDENT’S CLUB The President’s club is proud to announce the
current and growing membership. Membership
requires that a five year commitment of at least
$500 per year, in excess of current dues be
made.
It is the objective of the members of the Presi-
dent’s Club to erase our deficit. We intend for it
to become nothing but a historical memory.

I received a beautiful email
from Roy Freedman, who is
relocating and leaving the Hendersonville
area, as well as Agudas Israel. Following is
that email:
“As I prepare to leave lovely Henderson-
ville, I want to extend a deeply heartfelt
thank you to Rabbi Jackson, the congre-
gants and staff who warmly welcomed me
into the Agudas Israel community. You
have made my life so much richer and I
have tried my best to give back. Shalom,

Our thank you to Roy. It has been a pleas-
ure to have had him as a member of our

A Day to Remember On September 24th, I was privi-
leged to travel to Washington,
D.C. with the Blue Ridge Honor
Flight. There were 102 veterans
from World War II, and the Ko-
rean and Vietnam wars, in addi-
tion to 80 guardians, volunteers,
medical staff, EMS and press that
filled the 181 passenger American
Airlines plane. The crew was all
volunteers as well. This was the 10th year that the pro-
gram, started by Jeff Miller, took place and the 500th
Honor flight nationwide.
I arrived at the Asheville airport at 6.30 am to be
greeted by a military honor guard, a band, and the well
wishes of hundreds of people. This was only the begin-
ning.
The flight took off for Reagan Airport under a water
cannon salute, and when we landed in DC there were
lines of American Airlines employees lining the run-
way waving American flags and shouting a welcome.
Once inside the terminal, there were military personnel
of all the branches greeting us, as well as hundreds of
young children passing out hand-written notes and gar-
lands of hand made flowers. I must admit the emotion
was high and it brought a tear to my eyes as well as
tightness in my throat.

FOOD FACTS AND FUN??????????? What is the diameter of the earth? This is just one exam-ple of the questions you may be asked on Trivia Night. All congregants are invited to an evening of Food, Facts (useful and otherwise) and Fun as emcee Danyul Jack-son leads us on an exploration of our knowledge of trivia , both Jewish and secular, on Thursday evening , Novem-ber 3, at 5:30. This event is complimentary to our mem-bers and is brought to you by your Membership Commit-tee. Included is a light dinner, trivia contests and prizes. Guest admission is $10.00. Be sure to respond to Bar-bara Gittleman at [email protected],or 828-329-2839 by October 27. Submitted by Barbara Gittleman
IF YOU LOST IT, WE MAY HAVE FOUND IT
We have many coats, sweaters, etc.
that need to be claimed. Come look at
what we found and to see if you lost it.
Anything not claimed by December
31st, will be donated to IAM.
ALSO... ...After the Mountain Jewish Festival
(MJF) was over, and the long tables were broken
down, we have one table missing that belongs to
Frances Stollmack. She was kind enough to let us use
it for MJF. It was a 4 ft. white table with folding
legs. Frances’ name was written on the underside, on
each end. If you have this table please call the syna-
gogue office, so we can return it to Frances.
Thank you.
We boarded a number of specially equipped buses
since a number of the veterans were in wheelchairs,
and required a lift to get them on the bus. There was
a motorcycle police escort and we went first to the
World War II Memorial. There was Bob Dole to
greet us and hundreds of people who just said
“Thanks”. The Memorial is quite impressive and a
tribute to those who served.
Next we went to the Korean War Memorial, ac-
companied by Young Soo Lee, a Fletcher resident
and President of the Korean Association of Ashe-
ville. He hoisted the Korean flag alongside the
American flag at a special ceremony held specifi-
cally for veterans on the Blue Ridge Honor Flight. A
wreath was placed, and we, as well as other visitors,
gave a salute. Finally, members of the South Korean
delegation gave each of us a medal of recognition
made from barbed wire from the Korean Demilita-
rized Zone that divides North and South Korea. The
sculptures of the men in full battle dress are remark-
able as are the inscriptions on the marble walls sur-
rounding the Memorial.
Next stops were to the Vietnam Veterans Memo-
rial, the Lincoln Memorial and the Air Force Me-
morial. Standing in front of the Vietnam Memorial
makes one very humble knowing what they gave and
were never appreciated. How quickly we forget.
Back on the bus and final stop was Arlington Na-
tional Cemetery. Here we placed a wreath marked
with the words “Blue Ridge Honor Flight” at the
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and watched the
changing of the guard. A time to reflect a bit and a
walk down the rows of markers.
Time to go home. From the time we left Asheville
until we returned it was about 15 hours. On the ride
back, we were each given an envelope in which were
notes and personally addressed letters from school
children. I guess each was given a name to write to.
The Asheville Airport was filled with hundreds of
people which we did not expect. Governor Pat Mc
Cory was first to greet us and Rep. Mark Meadows
was there also. A bagpiper played as we walked into
the terminal to find many former military, Scout
groups, friends and relatives, as well as just strang-
ers. I never expected the day to be so all inclusive,
humbling and emotional. The planning by Jeff
Miller and his group of volunteers is to be com-
mended. It was a day I will never forget.

YAHRZEITS
Agudas Chai Lites page 7 November 2016
The following names will be read at Shabbat services on Friday and Saturday
PLEASE NOTE: * DENOTES HAVING A MEMORIAL PLAQUE. The Yahrzeit policy of our Temple is as follows: You have the choice of when to observe this anniversary. The date can be celebrated by the English calendar or the Hebrew. Please inform the office of which way you would prefer. A letter to remind you about your upcoming Yahrzeit is sent to you two weeks before the actual date. The name of your loved is read at the Friday evening service immediately prior to the date of the Yahrzeit. Please keep the Temple Office informed of any incorrect dates. or new dates you wish to include.
REFLECTIONS VETERANS DAY 2016 Another Veterans Day will be observed. Some in our
community, in large part due to their birth date, lack a
specific reference point as to its meaning, while others
dismiss its presence as ancient history, and others un-
fortunately push aside this day choosing to go on their
merry way.
I, as you, have a positive and personal connection
with the acts of appreciation and support given our vet-
erans. However, the question I pose to you today is:
How does one observe Veterans Day.?
Do you attend a parade? Do you attend a speech
given by a veteran on his or her experiences in the mili-
tary? Do you find a quiet spot in a garden or park and
rekindle memories of friends, family members or com-
rades in arms who did not return? Lastly, do you visit a
cemetery and honor a fallen soldier with an American
flag?
Posing these questions to you, I would like to share,
in part, the writing of Father Dennis Edward O’Brien,

USMC. “It is the soldier not the reporter who
gives us freedom of the press. It is the soldier not
the poet who gives us freedom of speech. It is the
soldier not the campus organizer who gives us the
freedom to demonstrate…”
Battlefield commanders publicly comment on
historical words “That it is the soldier above all
who prays for peace. He or she must suffer and
bare the deepest wounds and scars of war.” Said
by General Douglas MacArthur. With these unsel-
fish gifts and sacrifices we, as Americans, would
not enjoy or have the experience or opportunity to
go about our lives in freedom.
We also must acknowledge that America has its
share of significant challenges; they are real but
cannot be in any shape or form be attached to the
uncommon valor of our men and women who are
serving in our Armed Forces now or who have
served honorably. Therefore, may I suggest a si-
lent moment to reflect upon what may be lacking
in our soul. Submitted by Allen Rosen
