RABBI’S MESSAGE Rabbi Rachael Jackson

April showers bring…Pesach!

Passover is a time for family, for friends, and

for community. We were all together at Sinai

and we are all together now. For hundreds, if

not thousands, of years, we have celebrated

and retold the story of our people every sea-

son. We are familiar with the cast of characters

who join us at our Seders year in and year out.

Moses and Pharaoh, Miriam and Elijah, the four

sons and chad gadya—all of them have a seat with

us at the table. But how much do we know of

them?

Our sages and commentators from many hundreds

of years ago wondered the same thing. They

wanted to understand the back story to our famous

heroes of the bible. They authored books trying to

do just this. There are several books which contain

this material, which is collectively called Midrash.

One story about Moses’ early childhood explains

why he has deficient speech:

Pharaoh’s daughter used to kiss and

hug Moses, loved him as if he were

her own son and would not allow

him out of the royal palace. Because

he was so handsome, everyone was

eager to see him, and whoever saw

him could not tear himself away

from him. Pharaoh also used to kiss

and hug him, and he used to take the

crown of the Pharaoh and place it

upon his own head…

The magicians of Egypt sat there

and said, “We are afraid of him who

is taking off your crown and placing

it upon his own head, lest he be the

one of whom we prophesy that he

will take away the kingdom from thee.”

Some of them counseled to slay him

and others to burn him, but Jethro was

present among them and he said to

them, “This boy has no sense. How-

ever, test him by placing before him a

gold vessel and a live coal; if he stretch

forth his hand for the gold, then he has

sense and you can slay him, but if he

makes for the live coal, then he has no

sense and there can be no sentence of

death upon him.” So they brought these

things before him, and Moses was

about to reach forth for the gold when

Gabriel [an angel] came and thrust his

hand aside so that it seized the coal, and

he thrust his hand with the live coal into

this his mouth, so that his tongue was

burnt, with the result that he became

slow of speech and of tongue. [Midrash

shemot Rabbah 1.26]

We may never know why Moses was slow of

speech. But this midrash does start to create a full-

ness to the hero for whom we already care.

At your Seder this month, I would like to encourage

you to think about the formative experiences you and

your loved ones have had which you now share at

your Passover table. Share and listen to see what you

might learn from someone at your table this year.

Chag Pesach Sameach!

With blessings for a beautiful and meaningful Pass-

over,

BROTHERHOOD REPORT

(Continued on page 3)

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE It’s amazing how our lives as Jews cycle around the

holidays. So now, as Purim has ended, we begin to

prepare for Passover. There is a lot to do around

Passover. We have to plan our seder, figure out

who’s bringing which of the oh so important ritual

foods and see who will bring the extra chairs. This is

a time that we think about our family, our circle of

friends, our community.

This is the time that we recall and celebrate our

freedom from slavery. We retell the story of the Exo-

dus and with the retelling understand that we have a

“responsibility to enjoy the freedom as well as the

responsibility to care for each other and improve the

lives of all people” (Rabbi David A. Spey, Temple

Bat Yam). As we sit around the table and recount the

Passover story, we are celebrating a ritual of commu-

nity. Rabbi Spey asks, what do we do to help and

support our community that is worthy of this celebra-

tion.

At Agudas Israel, despite our small size, I believe

our efforts are mighty. We can all point to the actions

taken by the congregation towards tikkum olam;

Mitzvah Day; food drives; and interfaith days of giv-

ing to name a few. But, I am always amazed at the

amount of individual effort put forth by our members

to help make life better here in Henderson County.

We have members who volunteer at IAM, Boys and

Girls Club, Mainstay, the Rescue Mission, the De-

partment of Health and Human Services, again, just

to name a few. And, let us not forget, the mountain of

hours that members spend within the synagogue to

provide resources that make our synagogue such a

special place.

So, I would tell Rabbi Spey that Agudas Israel,

both as an entity and each of its congregants, does

much to support our community that is worthy of

celebration. Is it enough? Of course there is much

that needs to be done. There are so many ways for

each of us to become involved in some aspect of

Temple and community life that is personally mean-

ingful, that may open new areas of interest and con-

tribute to a sense of belonging. I encourage you all to

become an active member of the community, in

whatever way works for you. Tell us what you’d like

to do and we will find a way to make it happen.

I hope this Passover, as we once again celebrate our

freedom, re-invigorates our desire to support our

community and our people.

Chag sameach

Dr. Linda Perkel, President

Brotherhood purchased and had installed the new

video security camera in the sanctuary which can be

used not only to monitor our services, but has the

capability of recording special events and to even

provide live streaming over the internet. The picture

quality is far superior to what was available via the

old camera. A great big thanks to Sid Williams and

David Monoson for their installation experience.

Based on the extremely high volume of latkas

(2,000), that would be required for MJF, coupled

with the dangers of using oil in the kitchen, which is

not only a hazard, but also difficult to clean up, it

was decided that Agudas would follow the lead of

Hardlox and purchase them this year.

Brotherhood will be very involved in MJF, as we

will be responsible for security, logistics, building

and campus set up, transportation, parking , buses,

set up of rooms, tables, security and handicap con-

cerns. We are also assisting Sisterhood with food

preparation and storage service. It is going to be an

amazing event, and Brotherhood will be wherever

they are needed.

Brotherhood will be donating $300.00 towards

Mitzvah Day, and as usual our members will volun-

teer and provide assistance wherever required.

Due to inclement weather, all outdoor activities

were suspended last month.

This coming June Brotherhood will be holding

elections for new Brotherhood positions, and have

solicited names for who would like to run for office.

Four positions are required, which include President,

Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. Nomina-

tions have already been submitted, and voting will

be held in May, prior to our new fiscal year, which

starts in June.

Brotherhood is planning to run a picnic fundraiser

(BBB) this upcoming Memorial Day, May 30th,

which will be held by the lake at the Levinson’s

property. Please mark your calendar and stay tuned

for additional information which will be provided

via the Chai Lites, and in our monthly news reports.

We expect to get a fantastic turnout. If you have

never been there, don’t miss it this time! All attend-

ing will be asked to prepare or bring a dessert for the

group.

Last Tuesday (March 8th) our “Agudas-It-Gets

golfing group was able to finally get out and play a

round of golf at Red Fox. Conditions were good and

AGUDAS ISRAEL SISTERHOOD

Notes from Nat Seems like the year just started and now we have

March behind us. March was the month we had our

very well attended Shabbat Across America service and

Dinner. From the feedback I received everyone had a

delightful evening with a beautiful service conducted by

Rabbi Jackson, Penny White and her wonderful music,

and the delicious food provided by Pita Express. It was

an exceptionally joyous evening.

Upcoming on April 23rd will be the congregational

Seder. Teddi Segal is working very hard on this event

and would like to have volunteers help with the set up.

The set up date will be Thursday April 21st, 1:00PM If

you are available to help please contact Teddi Segal at

[email protected]. To make your reservations for the

seder please see the attached flyer. We will need several

seder plates for this event. Please let me know if you

have a seder plate you would like to bring for the seder,

[email protected].

Preparations for this year’s Mountain Jewish Festival

have begun. The Balabusta Bakers are in full baking

mode. Starting with delicious Hamentashen which we

are baking not only for the Festival, but of course, for

the Purim Service. When we finish Hamentashen we

continue our baking and cooking with goodies such as

Mandel Bread, Rugelach, Matzoh Balls, Chicken Soup

etc, etc.

Sisterhood was happy and proud to be able to donate

$300. for Mitzvah Day which will occur this year on

Sunday, July 10th.

The April sisterhood general meeting will take place

on Monday, April, 11th at Bold Rock Hard Cider, 72

School House Road, Mills River. We will meet at the

synagogue at 1:30PM. Anyone needing a ride please

Email me at [email protected]. There is a brief tour

and explanation of the cidery after which we can par-

take in a flight of ciders or a pint of cider at a cost of

$5.00. This tour will begin at 2:00PM. Please make

your reservation with Natalie Zitnick,

BUILDING EVACUATION PLAN

In the unlikely event of a fire alarm or any other reason

to evacuate the building, the procedure is as follows:

911 will be notified by security personnel.

Stop whatever you are doing and proceed to the

closest emergency exit.

Everyone will be directed to assemble in the

Founder’s Garden, which is adjacent to the

entrance to the property.

Security will determine if everyone who was in the

building is present at this assembly area.

The Security Committee, Rabbi and Board members

will assist in the safe and orderly evacuation. We will

unlock the front doors for the first responders and util-

ize our fire extinguishers if safe to do so.

Everyone is asked to remain in the Founder’s Garden

area and not to attempt to get to their cars to leave be-

cause doing so will block the emergency vehicles enter-

ing our property.

As soon as the emergency is under control, congre-

gants will be informed if it is safe to re-enter the build-

ing or to leave the property.

Periodic announcements will be made from the Bimah

reminding everyone of these procedures.

If there are any questions contact David Monoson at
