RINGING NEWS Spring 2010
So, how are you coming on those New Year’s resolutions? Still doing less or
more of that thing you promised yourself? Did you start or stop that habit?
Here’s my horrible confession to you: I don’t make resolutions, because then I
don’t have to feel guilty about not following through, because I know I
probably won’t. Isn’t that awful?
Here’s what I DO know, though. Whatever your resolution, doing something
different, making a change, can be a very positive experience. Diversity is a
good thing. To be single-minded to the exclusion of ALL else is probably not
very healthy. When I was little, I thought a well-rounded person was someone
who needed to exercise. Turns out it’s a compliment! No matter how much
you love your job, devoting 100% of your time to it is not the best thing. If
your friends are your life, how will you earn a living? A hobby that engulfs
you may leave you alone all the time. Each one of these things is a good thing,
but to miss out on LIFE because of them is not. I realized I don’t spend
enough time at home a few weeks ago when my neighbor was taken to the
hospital in an ambulance in the middle of the night. I wanted to go visit her in
the hospital the next day, until I realized I had no idea what her last name was.
And then I realized that I only know the first name of her and my next door
neighbors. I leave early and get home late at night and have weird days off
and haven’t gotten to know anyone on the street since I moved in. A little less
work and a little more neighborliness…a little less TV and a little more
exercise…a little less computer and a little more friends…THAT makes a
diversified, well-rounded person. That’s what I want to be!
Why am I telling you this? I’d be willing to bet that a majority of you reading
this have never rung bells outside the four walls of your church or school, with
marked-up music. Am I right? How about becoming a better-rounded
musician…helping your ringers become well-rounded? Leave a page without
markings. Memorize a piece. Play at a nursing home, or on a street corner.
Come to a Festival event! Stretch your choir to do something different, and
they will become bonded together and more excited about bells. Central Texas
Spring Ring is right around the corner, and it’s time to start registering for the
Area IX Festival in Arlington this summer. Why not make THIS your New
Year’s resolution?
Ringingly Yours,
Sheryl ‘Bob’ Cory

When I was in elementary school, I would go to my mother’s handbell rehearsals
each week, and listen to magic being made in such a unique sound. She coaxed me into the art
at age 10 -- and I became completely hooked. During junior high and early high school, it
hadn’t occurred to me how my “career” in bells would progress, other than eventually joining
the same ensemble my mother had always played in. I simply didn’t know other opportunities
existed! When I began looking at colleges when the time came, though, I was insistent that
my decision be based on a school having a handbell program. I was accepted to Baylor
University, and rang with them for 9 semesters. That was certainly a turning point for me, in
terms of the growth of my musicianship -- but what I truly consider the biggest turning point
in my handbell journey was attending my first Area IX festival (in 1998, in Ft Worth). I rang
with my mom and with the same group I’d known since I was probably a foot tall, and by then
had done so many times. But even so, attending that festival made a huge difference in the
camaraderie of the ensemble. And I remember feeling like I was in the company of celebrity
with the festival clinicians that were there! I’d been to many local festivals in Dallas, and had
experienced mass ringing, but admittedly had not been truly moved by the music until the Area
IX Conference in Ft Worth that year. I remember between classes walking by the vendor area and seeing the registration table and hearing for the
first time about AGEHR membership. It was a “been there, done that, got the tshirt” kind of moment for me -- but I had just gotten there, hadn’t
done that yet, and wanted the tshirt! I found out that there are THOUSANDS of ringers like me that have passion for their art, and I was
awe-struck to meet some that had been ringing as long as I had been ALIVE! I admit, I didn’t join AGEHR at that festival (though I DID buy the
shirt…). I’m not even sure I attended any classes between rehearsals that year, but I had an amazing time, and it was certainly educational
regardless. I felt like an entirely new world had opened up to me!
That festival occurred the summer after my freshman year of college. When I graduated, I returned to my home church and began
ringing with the advanced ensemble there, and also subbed with other church groups around the Dallas area. The next Area festival I attended
was the 2006 event in Oklahoma. I subbed in a local church group that was attending the conference, and met people that are now very good
friends of mine that I continue to ring with. Fred Gramann and Jason Wells were the 2006 clinicians -- and from the two of them, I adopted
lessons and techniques I don’t know how I lived without before. I could listen to Fred Gramann tell stories for hours, and his advice and
experiences he shared really brought the music to life. And Jason Wells, as some of you know, has a great amount of energy that is really
inspiring. Though we often tease about the difficulty of this as ringers, it’s hard not to smile when you’re ringing under Jason’s baton! I
attended every class I could fit into my schedule, and just had an absolute blast! I couldn’t believe I had waited so long to attend another Area
festival!
When I was approached with the idea of serving on the Area IX Board 2 years ago, I was absolutely floored. It was a great opportunity
to support the art I’ve loved so long! Now I’m surrounded by fellow ringers that are true leaders of the instrument -- and of the movement -- the
movement to advance the art of handbell ringing, to educate and inspire ringers all over the Area. Working behind the scenes and helping
organize the same events that changed my musical life is quite an experience. Learning firsthand about everything that goes into organizing these
festivals and clinics makes me appreciate them even more than I had before! Attending the 2008 festival in Austin, this time as an Area IX board
member, was still a powerful event, but on an entirely new level. I paid attention to everyone else’s experience -- I watched people’s smiles, and
loved seeing them get excited about meeting clinicians, mastering the music, learning new techniques, seeing friends from across states that they
may only see every 2 years at these events. I talked to more people about where they
were from, and what their own handbell journey had been like. And after the final
concert (which was amazing, by the way), my fellow Board members and I were already
thinking about ways to make it an even better experience for everyone in 2010! So when
I say I strongly encourage you and everyone you know to attend the 2010 “Thrill of the
Ring” in Arlington this June, I don’t do it foremost as an Area IX Board member -- I do it
as a ringer. I encourage you because as a ringer myself, I had NO idea what opportunities
were available to me as a musician before I began attending this biennial event. And it
doesn’t matter why you attend, or where you ring -- as an individual ringer, as a pickup
group, as a church ensemble -- we all gather at this event for fellowship, and to learn
more about our craft and our art, and to continuously become a better musician and
handbell ringer (because despite my now 21 years experience, I admittedly still have
much to learn, and am always an anxious sponge). If you’re a first-time attendee, I say a
hearty welcome -- welcome to the continuously expanding world of handbells, and
welcome to the large family that Area IX ringers become. I invite you to soak up every
opportunity you can while you’re there at the festival, and learn about all the exciting
things AGEHR and Area IX have to offer!
Come ring with us in Arlington, June 25-27 at the “Thrill of the
Ring” Area IX Biennial Festival/Conference!
