Ag Days2C sunDay, Jan. 5, 2014 siDney HeralD

The MonDak Ag Days and Trade Show will start Thursday at 7 a.m. with the 660 KEYZ Country Breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. at the Richland County Fair Event Cen-ter. The trade show opens at 8 a.m.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the time will be filled with talks related to transitioning the family farm from one generation to the next. Dr. Ron Hanson, who is an agri-business professor from the University of Nebraska, will give four different talks all related to the emotional and economical as-pects of farm transition planning. Hanson is very well-known for his presentations on this topic and is a truly dynamic and thought-provoking speaker.

Following Hanson’s talk there will be a break for lunch, and the topics will then shift to livestock production. Bill Pelton will be on hand in the afternoon to provide a session on beef quality assurance from 1:309-2:30 p.m., and he will be followed by the banquet speaker, Amanda Radke, discussing “Looking Beyond Our Pasture Gates” from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

The last speaker for the afternoon will be Mark Henning, who is an area agronomist with the NRCS office in Miles City, and he will discuss the importance of soil health and steps that ranchers can take to help improve the health of their soils.

From there, the event will transition into the evening program which includes a social event and a banquet. Keynote speaker for the banquet will be Amanda Radke who helps run a purebred Limousin cattle opera-tion with her husband in Mitchell, S.D. Radke has been active in agriculture advo-cacy and as a young FFA member helped to organize a walkout of several thousand other FFA members at a Carrie Underwood concert because of the singers’ anti-meat positions and her association with the Hu-mane Society of the United States. Radke’s presentation and the banquet itself will have an FFA flair as we will also be celebrat-ing 75 years of FFA in Sidney.

Tickets for the dinner are $30 each and are available at Stockman Bank, the Sidney Area Chamber of Commerce and Agricul-ture and the Extension office.

The social, sponsored by Prewitt’s/Sidney Livestock Center and 1st Bank, begins at 5 p.m. Thursday.

On Friday, the event will continue with a somewhat newer Ag Days tradition, the family program. This event will be held at the meeting room in the Extension/EARC building. This program will begin at 9 a.m. and will feature horticultural-related top-ics. Discussions will consist of setting up a hydroponic system, community and school

gardens, beginning backyard beekeeping, the Master Gardener program and a virtual tour of a local garden. Speakers will include Sidney gardener Nathan Roth, Extension agent Tim Fine, Jamie Selting of the NRCS, Pam Radke of Sidney schools, Ira Lake of Lambert schools and rural gardener Karen

Redlin. For more details about Ag Days, you are

Amanda Radke will head-line the Ag Days banquet program Thursday night.

Tickets for the dinner are $30 and can be purchased at Stockman Bank, the Sidney Area Chamber of Com-merce and Agriculture and the Richland County Exten-sion office.

Radke is a fifth-generation rancher from Mitchell, S.D. She grew up on a purebred Limousin cattle operation in which she and her husband, Lyle, are still active.

Radke will present the program, “Looking Beyond Our Own Pasture Gates” from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

For the banquet, Radke’s program is titled, “When City and Country Collide.”

Graduating with a degree in agriculture journalism from South Dakota State University, she was ac-tive from a young age in advocacy for the U.S. beef industry. Radke is the 2006 national FFA extemporane-ous speaking champion and

the 2006 speaking National Beef Ambassador. She has served previous internships with USDA’s Ag Marketing Service in Washington, D.C., and the National Cattle-men’s Beef Association in Denver, Colo., and BEEF magazine.

On BEEF daily, she pro-vides timely industry news

and commentary from the unique perspective of a young professional commit-ted to a life in production agriculture and invites readers to join in the discus-sion.

She is also the author of the children’s book, “Levi’s Lost Calf.”

Lambert School teacher Ira Lake is work-ing toward obtaining funding for a full blown student-run vegetable garden.

The idea began when the agriculture teacher wanted to have a fall festival for the Lambert community, and some of the students wanted to grow their own pump-kins for it.

“I thought, let’s expand that idea and let’s provide a garden for the community, for the whole school, and maybe we would grow not just pumpkins but some produce that maybe we could market or give away,” Lake said.

Lake is one of the speakers for the com-munity/school garden updates from 11:15-11:30 a.m. Friday at the Extension confer-ence room.

If the plan takes off and funding is grant-ed, Lake hopes the garden would eventu-ally turn into a school-run farm. A similar program Lake referred to is the student run PEAS Farm at the University of Montana, which also has a farm-to-school program where farm produce is served at the student cafeteria.

There are raised beds already made that are 65 x 65 feet, and if funding came through garden work would begin in the spring with planting.

As an agricultural community, Lambert students are familiar with farm work, but Lake hopes to expose them to the post-pro-duction aspect of growing produce.

After showing the film “Dirt: The Movie” to student in his ecology class, the idea for more recycling in the community emerged.

“We decided that maybe we would do some worm farming and maybe recycle the fibers that we come in contact with, paper and the newspaper and different things like that, and keep that local so we’re not ship-ping that out and definitely not putting that into the landfill,” Lake said.

Lake and his students are currently in the initial stages of worm composting. Last week, he acquired composting worms.

He researched different kinds of worms, including night crawlers, which tunnel back and forth horizontally, and Alabama jump-ers, which work vertically, before deciding on red wigglers, which stay at the surface and drag the litter from the top right down in.

“Right now we’re taking a few steps, but still at the dream stage...” Lake noted.

In September, the school board gave consent to Lake and his colleagues Necole Killick and Trish Verschoot to implement the student garden program if funding came through.

Officials announce that Ron Hanson will provide four programs, which will focus on steps to plan for the transition of the family farm business, that morn-ing. Hanson is a professor of agribusiness for the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has earned 26 university and national recognitions during his 39-year career.

Hanson’s honors include being selected the Nebraska Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation in Washington, D.C. and being picked the Educator of the Year by the university’s student government. He has also earned the John Deere Agribusiness Teaching Award of Excellence, the University Educator of the Year Award and the USDA Excellence in University

Teaching honor.His programs, starting at

8:30 a.m. Thursday, during the MonDak Ag Days held at the Richland County Fair Event Center, will include:

• “You Can Buy Our Fam-ily Farm But Remember That I Still Own It” – This session will identify and focus on the “family issues” of farm business owner-ship succession for farm families. When transfer-ring the actual ownership of a family farm or busi-ness operation to the next generation (i.e. especially if the farm itself has been in the family name for several generations), this entire succession process itself can result in a lot of emotional stress among all family members involved. There are many “family and personal issues” which confront family members in working through this transi-tion without disrupting the daily operation of the farm

business or the farm estate becoming tangled up in legal problems.

These succession issues must eventually be dis-cussed by the family mem-bers involved and resolved to everyone’s agreement to allow for a successful transi-tion of ownership to this next generation of family farm producers. In develop-ing a strategic plan for farm

ownership succession for the family’s next genera-tion, there are some rather sticky and emotional issues to discuss among these family members but avoid-ing these issues could have disastrous consequences later. It is important to iden-tify and then discuss these “family issues” which often confront farm families espe-cially when one generation (the parents) now attempts to pass on the ownership and/or management control of their farming operation to this next generation of young farm producers (their adult children).

• “How Much Did Your Lawyer Cost Our Family Farm Estate?” — This ses-sion will focus on the key el-ements required for develop-ing a strategic plan for farm business ownership succes-sion in a fair and expedient manner. These are the ques-tions that will be addressed. Which children will have

the chance to gain owner-ship of the family farming operation? What is a fair selling price for the farm it-self within the family if the parents are willing to sell? What are years of sweat equity worth that have been invested in a family farm? How will the other children (not involved in the farm-ing operation) be treated fairly? Will their feelings be recognized? What if the in-laws decide to get involved in this farm family owner-ship succession plan? How does the farming daughter-in-law fit into this situation? What if the parents pass on ownership but will not give up control of their farm business? What if a fam-ily member hires a lawyer and files a law suit against another family member?

An important point to remember: if these family succession issues are not discussed and then resolved by all family members

themselves, it could end up costing each farm family member a lot of legal costs and lawyer fees. Can the farm family afford that and their farming operation still survive to the next genera-tion?

• “What If The ‘What If ’ Actually Happens In Our Family?” — This session will discuss these “what if situations” and provide a framework to help farm families in avoiding the potential conflicts (and eventual feuds) that often arise when one generation (the parents) passes owner-ship of a family farm onto the next generation (their adult children). These are the sensitive issues that most families want to avoid discussing or just pretend will never happen.

In terms of farm busi-ness ownership succession, parents must have a clear vision for the future of their

agribusiness professor to hold four programs during ag days

family farm operation and then be willing to dis-cuss their ideas with their children, especially those who have returned (or will) back home with the hope of eventually taking over the family farm. The key ques-tion then becomes “Do all the children in the family (both farming and non-farming) share this same vision as the parents?”

• “Keeping Your Farm In The Family For The Next Generation-Is There A Plan?” – The entire process for mapping out a succes-sion plan to transfer the eventual ownership of a family farm from one generation (parents) to the next generation (their adult children) can be an over-whelming task for many families. Where does this process even begin? Who makes the final decisions? Can you be fair to everyone

involved? What if there is not good communications within the family? How do you keep emotions and personal jealousies from taking over and preventing good decision making?

These are the issues that confront any farm family in determining a succes-sion plan which allows for this successful transfer of farm ownership. Often farm families never can get past the “family obstacles and personal fears” that can actually become road blocks which prevent a succession plan from being put in place to protect the family farm and to insure that their family farming legacy continues to the next generation.

These obstacles and fears will be identified and discussed with potential solutions so that farm fami-lies can move forward in their succession planning

process. This presentation will outline the necessary steps to implement as well as achieve a successful suc-cession plan that hopefully avoids potential misunder-standings between vari-ous family members. This lack clarity and failure to explain specifics by parents when communicating their wishes to their children is often a frequent cause of family conflict/disputes. Ideas will be shared to work through these emotional and stressful issues in a positive manner. Parents must embrace a vision for passing on their farm that is shared by all fam-ily members involved for this succession process to achieve a successful transition of ownership to their adult children and to insure the next generation of young farm producers.

The United States Cattlemen’s Association continued its U.S. country of origin labeling (COOL) tour last month with two events held in Spokane, Washington and Culpeper, Va. The USCA COOL tour, which began in August, crossed the country with fundraising events held in Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Washington and Virginia to benefit the U.S. COOL Defense Fund.

In response to the July 8 filing of a lawsuit to halt the U.S. COOL program, USCA, along with the National Farmers Union, American Sheep Indus-try Association and the Consumer Federation of America, officially entered the lawsuit as defendant-intervenors on Sept. 11 to defend COOL.

The U.S. COOL Defense Fund was established short-ly thereafter as a mecha-

nism to provide financial support for the legal fees associated with the defense.

Continued involvement and support are needed in the fight to preserve COOL. Individuals are contributing online through the COOL Defense Fund website at www.coolde-fensefund.org or by mailing their contributions to the U.S. COOL Defense Fund at P.O. Box 923, Columbus, MT 59019.
