Arable returns are on the rise but costs must stay in focus as farmers prepare for the uncertainty of Brexit. The AF Crop Protection Team are focused on supporting our members by helping to reduce their variable input costs. The team work with the supply chain to obtain supply and preferential terms on a wide range of products.

We utilise the collective buying power of our members to negotiate these preferential terms, our main objective being; deliver as much value back to our members as possible.

Members do not have to use the early order scheme, but many chose to in order to take advantage of our preferential terms.

Black-grass is an annual challenge and a long-term one too. Small increases in control can have big rewards. 95.5% control can keep populations stable, but an integrated weed management programme that reaches 97% control can reduce populations by over 30% in a year*1.

Bayer’s Liberator is proven to deliver 6%*2 more black-grass control at pre-em. than non-Bayer formulated flufenacet and diflufenican products, which makes it the smart choice to begin reaching the very best control levels you can this season.

Small steps today, big rewards tomorrow.

Why 6% better black-grass control is worth having this autumn.

See the impacts of black-grass control for yourself by visiting cropscience.bayer.co.uk/BGcontrol

*1 Based on 1,000 seeds in the seedbank and 20 seeds / plant / year (A&AF Black-grass special, June 2018). *2 14 independent replicated trials (2016 - 2018), average population in untreated = 201 heads/m2.

Liberator contains flufenacet and diflufenican. Atlantis OD contains mesosulfuron and iodosulfuron. Monolith contains mesosulfuron and propoxycarbazone. Liberator, Atlantis and Monolith are registered Trade Marks of Bayer. Use plant protection products safely. Always read the label and product information before use. Pay attention to the risk indications and follow the safety precautions on the label. THIS IS GROUND CONTROL

ASTROKerb™uk.dowagro.com [email protected]@dowagrouk

ASTROKerb is the most powerful dual-action weed control in oil seed rape. Like Kerb Flo 500, it is exceptional against blackgrass with an added effective action against hard to control broad-leaved weeds, such as poppy and mayweed. The innovative chemistry behind ASTROKerb combines residual with contact activity to control problematic weeds in winter oilseed rape. It is dual-action weed control that’s out of this world.

New research into the effect of ferric phosphate on slug behaviour

A recent Harper Adams University study will give growers a glimpse into the subterranean world of the slug to help address common misconceptions of slug behaviour once ferric phosphate has been ingested.

“With metaldehyde, growers are used to seeing dead slugs and slime trails on the surface. However, slugs behave differently after eating ferric phosphate,” explains Geoffrey Bastard, Regional Technical Specialist at Certis.

The study showed that 50 to 60% of slugs that ingested Sluxx HP pellets (ferric phosphate) retreated below the soil surface within the first 24 hours. After two to three days, virtually every slug had died underground.

“Once slugs ingest ferric phosphate it acts as a stomach poison, which causes them to retreat below ground where they die,” he says.

When ferric phosphate was first introduced to the market it was met with some scepticism, says Geoffrey.“As grower experience of using ferric phosphate grows, so does confidence in the product and it’s now more widely accepted.”

Slug control for the season aheadWith uncertainty around the future of metaldehyde and in light of the 10m buffer zone guidelines from the Metaldehyde Stewardship Group (MSG), some growers are now switching to ferric phosphate for the flexibility it offers, explains Geoffrey.“Although rainfall may not be high on the list of concerns now, it will no doubt be another issue to contend with, come autumn time,” he says.“Choosing a high-quality pellet will be key to staying on top of slug pressure and ferric

phosphate is a good option as it has a strong environmental profile and it doesn’t have any buffer zone restrictions. “The active substance is not soluble in water and so it fits perfectly into high-risk situations such as areas next to watercourses, and right up to hedgerows, where slug populations can thrive.”He adds that choosing a high quality, uniform, wet process ferric phosphate pellet, such as Sluxx HP, is a good choice

this season as it spreads well, is rainfast and has anti-moulding properties. “Sluxx HP was introduced three years ago for better visibility in the field and improved pellet durability. There has been good grower experience, and trials like this simply support the proven efficacy of the product.” However, he adds that understanding the slug risk on an individual farm basis and taking a fully integrated approach will be key in preparing for the upcoming season. “The previous crop, crop residues and cover crops will all have an impact on the potential risk, as will a solid understanding of the field history,” Geoffrey says.“Slug pellets are an important part of an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to slug control. However, cultural control techniques such as consolidated soils to minimise slug movement, will also all help to mitigate damage to vulnerable crops in the autumn.”A summary video of the research can be found in the news section on the Certis website www.certiseurope.co.uk
