Whydogtreatrecipes?

Well,likemanyofus,Ihaveaverybusyschedule.Iwantedtomakehealthydogtreatsthatwerealsoeasyandfasttomake,andsafetoeat.Afterlot’sofresearchoningredients,Irealizedthatevenhomemadetreatscancontainharmfulingredientssuchassugar,salt,nutmegetc.ManyotherhomemadedogtreatrecipesalsorequiredmoretimethanIwantedtospend.

Sincemytimetodevotetocookingislimited,Ineededtofindamethodthatwouldbefast,efficientandeasy.Mostdogtreatrecipesusecutecookiecuttersthatrequireseveralstepsinre-rollingoutthedough,whichrequiresmoretimethanIwantedtodevote.ThetechniqueIuseforcuttingthedogtreatsisveryefficient.

Rollingthedoughbetweenlayersofparchmentpaperandusingarulerandpizzacuttertocutthedoughintolittlesquarestakeslessthan3minutesperbakingtray.Thewholeprocessofmakingthecookies,notcountingbakingislessthan15minutesfromassemblingtheingredientstorollingoutthedoughontothecookiesheet,cuttingintoacheckerboardpattern.Whilethedogtreatsdonotlookcute,theyarebitesize,theytastegoodandAeowynlovesthem.OnceamonthImakeabatchofdogtreats.Ittakesmelongertoresearchtheingredientsandproportions,thanactuallymakingthetreats.

DogTreatStorageIngeneralyoushouldstoredogtreatsthesamewayyouwouldwithhomemadecookiesforhumans.Dogtreatsmaymoldorspoilmuchfasterinhumidorveryhotclimates.

Sincehealthydogtreatshavenopreservatives,itisimportanttomakesurethecookiesarecrispanddry.Softercookieswillnotlastaslong.Freshfruitswillmoldsoonerthandriedfruits.Storeyourhomemadedogbiscuitsinair-tightcanisters.Andforlongerstorageintherefrigerator,puttheminanair-tightglasssealedcontainers.

• Ifleftoutsideinacoolenvironment,hardcookiescanlastupto2weeks,although1weekispreferred.

• Ifleftintherefrigerator,theywilllastapproximately1month.

• Ifitwilltakesometimeforyourdog(s)toeatallthetreatsup,itisagoodideatofreezeanythatwillnotbeeatenwithinareasonablyshorttime.Orgiveextrasawaytodogfriendswhenfreshlybaked.

Blackstrapisaby-productofthesugarindustry.Itisthedarkliquidthatisleftafterthesugarhasbeenremovedfromthesugarcane.Thesugaristhemainproductandisdepletedofitsvitaminsandminerals,andtheblackstrapisfullofthem!

Oftenusedasadogfoodingredientoradogtreatingredient,blackstrapimprovesbothtasteandnutritionalvalue.

Thisisthekindthatyouwanttouseinyourdog’shomemadedogtreatsandfood.Ithasnotbeentreatedwithchemicals,andisinitsmostnaturalform.Itisalsothehealthiestandmostnutritiousformofmolasses.

Lightmolasses

SometimesknownasGrandma'sMolasses(whichisabrandcommonlyfoundinyourlocalgrocerystore),thismolasseshasmoresugarinitthanblackstrapdoes.

Darkmolasses

ThismolassesisbetterforyouandyourdogthanGrandma’s;however,itmaybesulphured(processedwithsulphur,achemicalelement)anditisnotaspureasblackstrap.

Therecipesinthisbookletdonotusemolasses.Youarewelcometoaddittoyourdogtreats.

HealthyIngredientstoAddtoYourDogTreatsChiaChiaisanancientseedand“superfood”.Chiahasmorethanthreetimestheamountofomega-3fattyacidsassalmon.Itishighinfiber,promotinghealthybowelmovements,aidinginconstipationwoes,andpromotingweightloss.Itcontainsloadsofiron,magnesium,andcalcium(morethanwholemilk!),aswellasphosphorus,potassium,copper,iron,andzinc.Plus,itkeepswell(unlikeflaxseed)andhasnotaste/odor.Add1/8teaspoongroundchiadailyforevery10poundsofyourdog’sbodyweight.Iadd1tablespoontomanyofthetreatrecipes.

CoconutOilCoconutoilspeedshealing,improvesskin,coat,anddigestion,andhelpswithallergies.Itsupportshealthyimmuneresponseandhasananti-inflammatoryeffect.Coconutoil’smedium-chainfattyacidshavebeenshowntoimprovebrainfunctionanddecreasetheamyloidproteinbuildupthatnegativelyaffectsbrainhealthinolderdogs.Startbygiving1/8teaspoonforevery10poundsofbodyweightdaily.Iuseitinthedogtreatrecipeswhenitcallsforoliveoil.

7. Addmoreliquidorflour,ifneeded.8. Divideinto4balls.

Rollouteachdoughballbetweenparchmentpaper,1/8-1/16”consistentthicknessinrectangularshapetofitbakingsheet.Discardtopparchmentpaper&saveparchmentpaperforthenextbakingtray.Usepizzacuttertocutthedoughintwodirections,creating1”x1”postagestampsizesquares.Usearulertohelpcutstraightlines.

Thispizzacuttingtechniquemakestheprocesssuperfast.Nore-rolling,cuttingshapesandre-rolling,astherearenowastescraps.Sinceyourdogdoesnotcarewhatcuteshapethetreatismadein,thispizzacuttingtechniqueisanamazingtimesaver.Highly-decoratedfancytreatsmadewithcookiecuttersarenotpartofthisrecipebooklet.Whiletheycanlookinvitingforushumans,Aeowynhasproventomethatsheonlycaresifshegetstoeatthem,nomatterwhattheylooklike.Andsincemytimeislimited,Ihaveoptedforquick,simpleandeasy.

Transferrectangularshapeddoughwiththebottomparchmentpapertobakingsheet.Donotmovethesquares—leavetheminplaceontheparchmentpaperandplaceonbakingsheet.

Baketimevaries:25minutes,slightlybrownforchewytreats(theyaremoreperishableifcookedless).Forcrispytreats,bake30-45minutes.Watchcarefully.Removefromovenandimmediatelyremoveparchmentpaper.Cooltreatsbeforetastetesting.Seeeachrecipeforindividualcookinginstructions.

Candy,gum,toothpaste,bakedgoods,andsomedietfoodsaresweetenedwithxylitol.Xylitolcancauseanincreaseintheinsulincirculatingthroughyourdog'sbody.Thatcancauseyourdog'sbloodsugartodropandcanalsocauseliverfailure.Initialsymptomsincludevomiting,lethargy,andlossofcoordination.Eventually,thedogmayhaveseizures.Liverfailurecanoccurwithinjustafewdays.

Chocolate
