Welcome to UCLA Library Special Collections.

Materials Access and Use Policy

• Indicates required field

The UCLA Library's primary responsibility is to students, faculty , and staff affiliated w ith the University of California (UC). However, the Library makes its resources available to others

whenever possible and when it does not conflict w ith its primary mission. Accordingly , Library Spec ial Collections (LSC) welcomes all non-UC researchers eighteen years of age or older.

Researchers not affiliated w ith UCLA, the University of California system, or w ith other UCLA contractual agenc ies may occasionally be asked to reschedule consult ing the LSC's

collections due to lack of reading room space.

Access

In order to protect and preserve the collections. materials administered by the department do not c irculate, but are available in the department's reading rooms. Any researcher w ishing to use

LSC's materials is required to complete and sign a patron registration form and give information about the subject, scope and purpose of the research being undertaken.

Upon arrival at Library Spec ial Collect ions, all researchers must present a government issued I.D., valid UCLA Library card, or a valid UCLA student identification at the department's

reference desk. This identif ication is required for each v isit and required to allow entry into our reading rooms. Registered readers agree to abide by protocols designed to maintain the

integrity of materials, ensure their preservation. and prov ide for long-term access.

Access to Library Spec ial Collections materials is prov ided in our two reading rooms:

History and Special Collections for the Sc iences materials are accessed in the Special Collections for Medicine and the Sciences reading room (located in the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library). All other Library Spec ial Collections materials are accessed in the Ahmanson-Murphy reading room (located in the Charles E. Young Research Library).

Manuscript collections and archival records may contain sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations. Researchers are

advised that the disc losure of certain information pertaining to identifiable liv ing individuals w ithout the consent of those indiv iduals may have legal ramif ications (e.g. the use of libelous

statements or the invasion of privacy) for which the UCLA Library assumes no responsibility.

Requesting Material

Many of Library Special Collections holdings are stored off-site at the Southern Regional Library Facility and as such readers must request materials in advance. W e ask that researchers

request all items at least three to five working days before their anticipated date of arrival. Paging requests are submitted directly through through one's LSC Aeon account.

Due to space constraints and high-volume use of materials, paging limitations are in place for materials used in our reading rooms. Requests to use archival and manuscript materials are

limited to five boxes per day. Retrieval of on-site holdings is limited to f ive items per hour.

Fill out the registration form, making sure to complete all fields with a red asterisk next to them. Department is not a required field so you can ignore this asterisk. Below is an example of how to complete the Institutional Affiliation section.
