1.0Next year, in 2012, the name Aedas will be

10 years old. In less than a decade we have

grown from relatively modest beginnings to

become one of the worlds leading architecturalpractices.

Our goal was to create a truly global practice

firmly rooted in the communities we serve while

drawing on international expertise and design

talent. Our offices provide a world-wide reach

for international clients. We strongly believe

that in an increasingly globalised market place,

architecture should benefit from a contextualised

response that acknowledges the cultural and

environmental specificity of its region. With

39 offices based in over 20 countries, we have

unrivalled local skills and experience around the

world. We are therefore able to advise clients in

a way that provides the advantages of both a

local and global approach. This belief and our

    commitment to establishing sustainable

practices in communities both large and small

remain as true today as they were at the start.

As an international practice, we are well-placed

to respond to the rapid change of the worlds

economies. Construction growth is expected to

outpace growth in GDP every year from 2010 to

2020, with 38 percent of US$4.8 trillion in total

growth coming from China and India, with the

USA also returning to strong cyclical growth.

This shift towards Asia and the emerging

markets is driven by rising populations, rapid

    urbanisation and strong economic growth.

Our expertise in infrastructure, urban design, masterplanning, mixed-use development, and

architecture for high-density living allows us to

work in these rapidly developing markets.

Despite some regional instability in the Middle

East, our offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha

    remain strong.

The USA and Canada will lead the developed

worlds recovery, fuelled by strong economies,

natural resources and high population growth.

With offices on both coasts of the USA and in

Brazil, we are optimistic about the future

development of Aedas in both North and South

    America.

The Aedas global community remains committed

to improving the worlds built environment. Our

long-term investment in Research & Development

(R&D) is key to this commitment. Through

innovation, we seek to develop sustainable

solutions to exceed our clients expectations.

    2.0OUR FORWARD THINKING

We believe it is vital for us to anticipate challenges

and to track future trends that will have a world-

wide impact. We feed this awareness into the way

that we design, operate and develop so that we

can offer intelligent solutions to our clients.

Designing for future challenges, even those yet

unimagined, drives us to deliver better design

solutions. Underpinning this is our continued

and increasing investment in and commitment

    to R&D.

For example, at the Al Bahr Towers for the

Abu Dhabi Investment Councils new headquarters

building we designed an external faade in the

form of a mashrabiya, a traditional Arabic screen

that reacts to sunlight to provide shading one of

a new breed of intelligent building concepts

    developed by Aedas.

Our research into new models of high-density

residential and urban buildings in China has

anticipated the increasing population levels and

drive to urbanisation that we are seeing not only

across Asian cities, but also in London, New York,

    So Paulo and Sydney.

We have developed global capacity that allows

us to undertake the design of the very largest

    projects, including the STAR Performance

    Venue (CCRC)which provides a premier

entertainment, lifestyle and retail destination for

the wider Singapore community and a number

of complex rail facilities in locations including

Toronto, Dubai and Hong Kong which will

    transport millions of passengers.

    Through foresight, research and significant

investment in new technologies over the last nine

    years we have developed ground-breaking

expertise in analysing and predicting building

    performance.

We have become one of the worlds leading

practices in the use of BIM (Building Information

Modelling) and this commitment will continue to

change the amount and quality of information

that we as designers can produce. We are just

starting to see its real possibilities in terms of the

creation of intelligent models, 3, 4 and 5-D

models (dealing with time and cost as well as

geometry), which are virtual prototype buildings.

In London we have developed, in partnership with

    engineering practice Arup and cost-consultant

Davis Langdon, an innovative approach to reduce

the cost of constructing tall buildings in the citys

square mile, by showing the effects of key design

decisions across the lifetime of the building.

By thinking ahead we can ensure that we create

designs that will not only satisfy todays needs but

will remain relevant in the future.

    For the development of the

London Cable Car, Aedas R&Ddeveloped a single parametric

    model for the three piers

    integrating computational and

    parametric design methods

    that combined fabrication and

    construction constraints. The

    double curved steel structures

The design concept for Aedas innovative competition winning design

is derived from an algorithmic composition, informed by Islamic

principles of design, that has been supplemented by the application

of a dynamic translucent mashrabiya which opens and closes in

response to the movement of the sun, reducing solar gain on the

building faade by up to 50%. The resulting composition seeks

to create a building which is both culturally and environmentally

responsive. The building is targeting a LEED Silver rating and is on

programme for occupation in the Spring of 2012.

    OUR COLLABORATIVE &

STRATEGIC APPROACHOur collaborative approach to the design of

major projects is unique. With over 2,000 staff in

20 countries, we have the rare ability to draw on a

breadth and depth of expertise from around the

globe and across a wide range of sectors and skills.

We bring our expertise to local offices in a wide

variety of ways, whether through sharing

knowledge and best practice across countries and

continents, or by assembling global teams to work

collaboratively on single projects. This approach is

underpinned by our evidence-based designphilosophy. We innovate through our R&D teams,

we learn from past projects, we test and evaluate

our designs all the time, sharing our knowledge

    throughout Aedas.

The benefits to our clients, end-users, and the

wider environment can be seen in a number of

our major collaborative and strategic projects:

On Dubai Metro, a global team worked to

deliver the project from 3 key locations London,

Hong Kong, and Dubai. Design realisation was

supported by our London-based R&D group, who

developed new software to realise the complex

    geometries of the station roofs.

At the National September 11 Memorial

Museum at the World Trade Centerin

New York, the UKs R&D team worked with our

New York office to develop innovative software

which maps the visitor experience and interaction

within the spaces of the National September 11

    Memorial Museum.

In Qatar, the 2022 FIFA World Cup Stadium

pairs our Los Angeles based sports expertise with

the collaboration of our local Abu Dhabi office.

On the seven-star Cleveland Clinic Hospitalin

Abu Dhabi, we assembled a design team from

around the world. Manchester and Birmingham in

the UK brought healthcare expertise and clinical

design knowledge. Hong Kong and Dubai

brought design teams with a track record of

delivering significant major projects on time whilst

the R&D team provided sustainability and climatic

Key concepts for the Highway 407 scheme minimise

passenger circulation distances by anchoring the transit nodes

around a central retail concourse. Column free spaces simplify

wayfinding and allows direct sunlight deep into the station

and subway platform, reducing the need for artificial light.

    Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension

    Toronto, Canada

Aedas has recently completed the designs for two new below-ground stations on the

Spadina Subway Extension between Toronto and the City of Vaughan in Ontario, Canada. The Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) is a new 8.6 km underground

metro project with six stations and ancillary facilities. Highway 407 Station is a key

transport hub in Torontos Transit City 2050 Masterplan. It provides a strategic park

and ride interchange between private car, subway, light rapid transit, and local bus

services adjacent to Highway 407, helping to reduce inner city congestion. Sheppard

    4.0OUR CREATIVE IDEAS

Our ownership structure is unique at an

international level. Led and managed by the

people who own the company, Aedas is able to

set its own direction. This allows us to think,

explore and conceptualise our ideas, developing

a clarity of thought with which we seek to

continually improve the quality of our knowledge, skills and design to the benefit of our clients.

We are committed to enhancing the quality of

the built environment not just in the short term

    but also for future generations.

The incubation of ideas leading to creative design

solutions is supported by a wide range of initiatives

and the fostering and encouragement of a

borderless culture of free thinking and enquiry.

For example, Aedas key designers from around

the world gather four times a year at Global

Design Workshops for three days of intensive

design charrettes. During these exercises in rapid

and unfettered design, we encourage and supportknowledge sharing, team building, open

exploration of ideas and a true borderless

    international approach to creativity.

Our recent appointment of a Head of Global

Knowledge demonstrates our recognition of the

importance of sharing international best practice,

of learning from what we do so that we can

continually improve our design and service

    capabilities.

Our investment in R&D, relatively rare in

    architectural practices, demonstrates our

commitment to innovation and to the very

essence of free thinking and creativity. Our work

on establishing the Carbon Buzz website with

the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects)

which tracks the carbon footprint during thebuilding process, typifies our commitment to

sustainable building design and the reduction

    of carbon emissions.

The quality and consistency of our creativity is

evident from the smallest of details to the largest

of projects, some of which are illustrated in this

    years Annual Review.

    5.0AT A GLANCE

As the global recession began to ease, 2010

proved to be a stronger year for Aedas. Our

decision to diversify, both in sectors of work and

geographically, helped to increase our presence

around the world, while maintaining strength

    within our local markets.

Asia continues to be one of the strongest markets

for the practice. In China we have secured large

schemes including a 339 m tall office buildingin

Wuxi, the AIA Finance Centeroffice building

in Foshan, and the Midfield Concourseat the

Hong Kong International Airport. ThroughoutAsia, we are seeing signs of rapid growth. While

Shanghai is expected to double its workload,

offices such as Singapore are also seeing growth,

with the completion of the Marina Bay Sands

    Integrated Resortand the regional headquarters

    for Lucasfilmnow under construction.

The European market remained constant and

weve continued to build on our existing portfolio.

Our work for Ferrari continued in Italy and weve

experienced an increase in workload in Russia

where we have been commissioned to design the

Zapolyarye Resortin Sochi and the Barvikha

    Residencein Moscow. Despite the UK

Governments cuts in education work, Aedas

remained strong in this sector and secured

commissions for six new Academies across the

country. With the London market showing signs

of recovery, weve had new commissions for the

Blackwall Reach Regeneration project and the

high-profile Thames Cable Carscheme which will

be completed for the 2012 Olympics. In response

to a growing demand within the hospitality industry,

we have expanded our interiors group in London.

Weve seen a steady increase in the Americas and

opened our first office in Canada where work on

three stations for the Toronto Transit Commission

is under way. In the USA, we recently completed

government projects for the Dorothy I. Height/

    Benning Libraryand Watha T. Daniel/Shaw

Libraryin Washington, DC and are working with

the US Department of States Bureau of Overseas

Building Operations where we are now in our

third term contract for the design and upgrade of

    embassy facilities around the world.

We have increased our healthcare and researchportfolio with the new NY Presbyterian Morgan

    Stanley Childrens Hospital Childrens

    Emergency Departmentand the Seattle

    Childrens Research Institute Aquatics Suite

and Center for Clinical and Translational

Research & Center for Child Health, Behavior,

and Development. In South America, our SoPaulo office has strengthened its presence and

    has secured the Yuny Mixed-UseDevelopment

and has completed the design of educational

    prototypesfor communities along the Amazon

River as well as the Sport Club Recife Arena.

In the Middle East, our focus has shifted from

Dubai to Abu Dhabi and further to Qatar. In Abu

Dhabi, construction of the Al Bahr Towers, the

Cleveland Clinic Hospital and the British

School Al Khubairatare well under way.

Construction on the New Doha International

Airport Terminushas commenced and the new

Qatar Soccer Stadiumthat we designed with

Populous will be completed for the 2022 FIFA

    World Cup.

Cover graphic: The Taiwan Tower, which was designed by Aedas R&D, is

like a pebble dropped into the sea. Its shape mimics the form that emerges

when a pebble hits the surface of water. Its structural faade comprises of

series of spiralling ribbons which weave the tower into its surroundings,

    forming terraces and bridges.
