It is a day of remembrance. We remember (with very great appreciation) and honor all those who gave their lives in the defense of this great nation. While our minds are preparing to remember, I thought we would continue our series from old issues of the Gospel Advocate this week with an article about biblical calls to remembrance. The following article appeared in the December issue of the Gospel Advocate, in 1945. It was authored by H. Leo Boles. A CALL TO REMEMBRANCE The Holy Spirit said through Paul to Timothy: “Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my gospel.” (2 Tim. 2:8.) “Remember” and “remembered,” with kindred words, are used many times in the bible. It means “to hold in mind.” It is the opposite of “forget.” Man is so prone to “forget” what he ought to remember and “remember” what he ought to forget. There are things which we should forget. “But one thing I do, forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before,” said Paul. (Phil 3:13.) So there are things that Paul put behind him; he would not hold them in mind. Of course they were not blotted out of his memory, but they were not permitted to be brought to the fore; they were driven into the chamber of the past. There are also things which we are to remember. These things should never be put out of the mind. Timothy is told to keep Christ Jesus in mind all of the time; he is never to let the thoughts of him be put in the chamber of forgetfulness. The church at Thessalonica was asked to remember Paul and his labors among them: “For ye remember, brethren, our labor and travail: working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.” (1 Thess. 2:9.) There are so many things in the New Testament to mark those things which call for special remembrance. These things are to be kept in our mind continually. [Continued on last page]

[Continued from the front cover] GOD’S CALL TO ISRAEL

When the law was given on Mount Sinai, the fourth commandment read: “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Ex. 20:8.) This is the only commandment of the ten that begins with “remember,” Other commandments were as important and binding, but for some reason Israel is called upon to keep the Sabbath day in mind. It was a monument of their deliverance from Egyptian bondage. God has manifested his power, wisdom, and blessings by delivering Israel from this bondage. Israel is to be grateful for this and to keep it in mind. This would keep their minds on God, who had delivered them. Israel was called upon to remember the anger of Jehovah at the disobedience of the people. “Remember, forget thou not, how thou provokedst Jehovah thy God to wrath in the wilderness.” (Deut. 9:7.) God had punished Miriam for speaking against Moses. Israel was called upon to remember that as a warning. “Remember what Jehovah thy God did unto Miriam, by the way as ye came forth out of Egypt.” (Deut. 24:9.) Joshua called upon Israel to remember the law and the commandments of God. “Remember the word which Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded you, saying, Jehovah your God giveth you rest, and will give you this land.” (Josh. 1:13.) David called upon Israel to remember the covenant which God had made with them. “Remember his covenant forever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations, the covenant which he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac.” (1 Chron. 16:15, 16.) The long list of sacrifices that were require by the law said in an emphatic way that they were to remember something. As the worshiper made his sacrifice of sin offering, peace offering, burnt offering, trespass offering, or any sacrifice that he made, it was to bring to mind something that Jehovah had commanded. The calendar of feasts said to Israel: “Remember.” Every feast day, every feast week, every feast year, every jubilee year said to Israel: “Remember God and his blessings and warnings.” The annual feasts called attention yearly to some of the blessings of God. Each of them said: “Remember.” The day of atonement, the day when the sins of Israel were rolled forward a year, said: “Remember that you are sinful men, and that God only can forgive.” Many of these sacrifices and feasts pointed forward to the Christ. They were to remember to keep in mind and look for his coming. The children were taught to “remember also thy Creator in the days of thy youth.” (Eccles. 12:1.) The people were warned against forgetting God. “Beware lest thou forget Jehovah, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.” (Deut. 6:12.)

WE [NEED] TO REMMEBER HISORY OF ISRAEL A remembrance of some things as a warning is demanded of God’s people today. Paul wrote to the church at Corinth and called attention to some of the things which befell Israel because of disobedience. He said: “Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.” (1 Cor. 10:11.) Jesus gave the brief warning to some of his hearers when he said: “Remember Lot’s wife.” (Luke 17:32.) Christians are exhorted to remind each other daily of the unbelief and disobedience of Israel. “Take heed, brethren, lest haply there shall be in any one of you and evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God: but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called To-day; lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin: for we are become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm unto the end.” (Heb. 3:12–14.) Malachi said: “Then they that feared Jehovah spake one with another; and Jehovah hearkened, and heard, and a book of remembrance was written before him, for them that feared Jehovah, and that thought upon his name.” (Mal. 3:16.) This “book of remembrance” is kept by Jehovah and will be opened at the judgment, “I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne; and books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their words.” (Rev. 20:12.)

SOME THINGS TO REMEMBER In this list there stands at the head the command to remember God. “I remember God, and am disquieted: I complain, and my spirit is overwhelmed.” (Ps. 77:3.) “And I looked and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord.” (Neh. 4:14.) Timothy was told to remember Jesus Christ. (2 Tim. 2:8.) He was also commanded: “Till I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.” (1 Tim. 4:13, 14.) The Lord’s Supper is a weekly reminder of the death and second coming of Christ. “This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me. . . . This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as often as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye proclaim the Lord’s death till he come.” (1 Cor. 11:24–26.) We are to remember the brevity of life. “For ye are a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” (James 4:14.) It is well to remember, keep in mind, all these things. There is a call every hour for Christians to remember some things.
