Advent and Christmas 2009 “Expecting the Unexpected” St. John’s Lutheran Church Sunday Worship in Advent Worship on the Sundays of Advent will focus on how God is at work in ways that are unexpected. Experiencing the unexpected is a big part of our Advent journey. Through scripture, song, proclamation and prayer we will celebrate God’s love for us demonstrated in the sending of God’s son to live among us. Families will begin our worship by lighting the Advent wreath. The 10:30am service Children’s Message will present “Messengers from God”. Weekly devotion and prayer cards will be distributed each week. Two options are scheduled. One is scheduled for Tuesday mornings and the other for Thursday evenings. The content of the study will be the same for the morning and evening group. Both daytime and evening studies will be held in the Fellowship Hall. This four week study invites us to explore how we are called to be as welcoming as possible to Christ at work in the world. The Bethlehem Baby teaches us that God is present with us in Jesus Christ. This group will talk about what that really means by reflecting on God’s promises in all circumstances of our lives. Yes, blue as in the blues. As in "I am feeling blue”. Not everyone is up and cheery for the Christmas holidays. Dealing with the death of a loved one, facing life after divorce or separation, coping with the loss of a job, living with cancer or some other disease that puts a question mark over the future, and a number of other human situations make parties and joviality painful for many people in our congregation and community. This Blue Christmas Worship Service offers an opportunity for people who are blue at Christmas to come to a sacred space, for a service which is, accepting where they really are, and holding out healing and hope. Our guest preacher will be Pastor Stacy Marsh who serves Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Westminster. Do you know of someone who might benefit from attending this service? If yes, contact the church office and well send the person an invitation – or invite them yourself and come with them. Please contact the church office if you would like to attend this worship service but need transportation. We will arrange for a member to pick you up and take you home. CHURCH OFFICE: 410-848-6412
