What are conditionals?

‐‐ Describe situations that occur (or don't occur) because of certain conditions.

Real Conditionals:

a. occur regularly

b. are likely or POSSIBLE in the future

Example: If I don't eat breakfast in the morning, I'm very cranky during the day.

           If I go to New York, I'll bring you back something special.

Unreal Conditionals:

a. untrue

b. unlikely

c. IMPOSSIBLE

d. imagined

Examples: If I were stupid, you probably wouldn't like me.

             If I had invited him to the party, he wouldn't have punched me in the face.

Present Real• general truths• scientific facts• habits• repeated events

If clause: simple present/present progressive            Result clause: simple present

Example: I get cranky if I don't eat breakfast in the morning.

Future Real• likely or possible in the future

If clause: simple present/present progressive             Result clause: future

Example: I'll bring you back something special if I go to New York.

Present Unreal• present untrue, unlikely, impossible, or imagined situations

If clause: simple past                                                          Result clause: would + base form(yes, even though it's present USE THE PAST!!!)                                          

Example: If I were stupid, you probably wouldn't like me.

Other ways to express Unreality

Wish:

present wishes: simple past

Yazeid wishes he could meet Little Man.*********** USE WERE (NOT WAS) FOR ALL SUBJECTS!!!!!!!!!! *************

past wishes: past perfect

Andrei wishes he had been invited to the party because he heard that Minji and Julia were there.

MEOW! I wish Yazeid were my friend! MEOW!
