On March 5, 2003, Thirteen’s Adult Education Department, the Office ofAdult and Continuing Education of NewYork City’s Department of Education,and the Adult Literacy Media Alliance(ALMA) produced a spectacular “Poetry
Live” workshop at Symphony Space inNew York City. The two-and-a-half-hourevent was attended by 256 New YorkCity adult education students and featured cast members from the hitBroadway show, Def Poetry Jam, as wellas the award-winning poet Jimmy Santiago-Baca.
Mr. Santiago-Baca, who led the studentworkshop, was born in 1952 in Santa Fe,New Mexico. In his early twenties, hewas convicted on drug-related charges

and was sentenced to prison. Five yearslater, he emerged from jail a voraciousreader and a self-taught writer. Hisawards and honors include the WallaceStevens Chair at Yale, the NationalEndowment Poetry Award, VogelsteinFoundation Award, National HispanicHeritage Award, Berkeley RegentsAward, Pushcart Prize, Southwest BookAward, American Book Award, and theInternational Prize.
Mr. Santiago-Baca is the author of A Place to Stand, a memoir, and numerous books of poetry, includingHealing Earthquakes, Black Mesa
